Ep 18 | Valerie June Podcast

hello

July 22, 2018

On the eve of her performance at the 2017 Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Valerie June talked to Terry David Mulligan about becoming a more confident performer, gleaning new insights from her older songs, her love of Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’. Plus, Valerie June shares what she’s learned from the great Mavis Staples.

Mulligan Stew July 28th 2018- Mid Summer tunes!

hello

Ok, listen. It’s festival season.
Stages everywhere are filled with great music.
So this Saturday on Mulligan Stew we have our own festival.
The What The f…k happened to July?” Festival.
Playing music to recover those days gone by…

Any show that starts with “This is a Man’s World” LIVE has infinite possibilities.

Fyi – the next track is James Brown’s Please Please Please but as done by Dave and Phil Alvin…and we’re off and running!

Highlights include a double shot of David Byrne – as himself and as Talking Heads.

I particularly like The Stone Set with

Amy Helm – Roll the Stone

Leon Russell – Roll away the Stone

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings – I’d have to be a stone.

The donor for hour two asked for specific Canadian artists..thus:

Neil Young – Live at Massey Hall..introduces a “new” song called Old Man.  Neil explains that he was writing about the manager that came with Ranch he had purchased.

“I think he’s around 70 now”…So, this is 1971 when Neil was a young man.  Neil today is 72 and he has become the old man he wrote about all those years ago.

Chilliwack – Fly at Night Live

Sam Roberts – Detroit 67 Live

Spirit of Canada (Barney/Doyle/BNLadies/Sarah/Colin James/Byrnes/Cuddy) – Live at The Commodore singing Home for a Rest for John Mann. The song was recorded and shot in the Men’s Washroom at The Commodore.  Please find GoFundMe/John Mann

The Stew ends with a rush of “everything”

Early Leeroy Stagger

Romi Mayes

Panic at the Disco

A mini “Midnight” set with Eric Clapton and Gregg Allman

And we finish with The Birthday Boy – Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones – Angie

Mulligan Stew July 14th 2018- Music and Wine at Interstellar Rodeo!

hello

Gurvinder Bhatia is a wine friend of mine..Lives in Edmonton

He is the wine editor for Quench Magazine plus the wine columnist for Global TV.

Once a year he takes many hours to listen to the artists appearing at the annual Interstellar Rodeo that takes place next weekend (July 20-21-22)

Then he pairs wine with the artist..which the audience can taste as they play.

It’s a brilliant crossroads of art and pleasure.

The Stew would like to provide, as a public service..an opportunity to practice this weekend.

We’ll play Feist, The Mavericks, Alejandro Escovedo and Courtney Barnett and Gurvinder will tell you why he chooses the wine to go with them.

Try this at home..it’s fun.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Anonymous/AP/REX/Shutterstock (6571574a)
Singer Prince is shown in concert in 1985
Prince, USA

We also have a solid playlist, which includes two special songs..

First is Prince..just Prince and a piano from 1983..but it’s a Prince that’s full gospel mode with Mary, don’t you weep..

And then there’s Alejandro Escovedo’s new single Sonica USA which has created quite a stir in the USA.

Another artist speaking out against social and political conditions south of us.

If you’re in Calgary Have a great final Stampede weekend.

Cheers – tdm

Ep 16 | Frazey Ford Podcast

hello

Jul 6, 2018

Frazey Ford’s last album, Indian Ocean, brought her worldwide attention — something that hit the BC singer-songwriter while playing a show in New Zealand last November.
“There was a whole row of women in front who flew in from some other island. And they knew the words to every song,” she tells Terry David Mulligan on this week’s podcast. “It was just so sweet. It’s a wild thing.”
Now working with a new label and with another album set to be finished later this year, Ford gives a peek at her personal approach to songwriter. And he shares some info on her plans this summer, which include a stop off at Lethbridge’s Wide Skies Music Festival.
Songs featured on this podcast include “Indian Ocean,” “Done,” and “September Fields” from Frazey’s 2014 album Indian Ocean.
