Ep 11 | Steven Page Podcast

hello

May 25, 2018

This week on Mulligan Stew, Terry hosts a feature conversation with Steven Page, recorded live at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. This past week, Barenaked Ladies celebrated their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the NMC. As part of the festivities, Terry hosted a Q&A with Steven Page that explored highlights of his BNL career, his solo work, and his collaborations with Steven Duffy, Craig Northey and more. Unforgettable stories about his encounters with Brian Wilson, Billy Bragg, and Steven’s last minute prep for his JUNO reunion with BNL.

Unsworth pours at Vij’s  (Chris Turyk-Unsworth & Mike Bernardo –Wine Director)

I don’t believe there’s any tougher wine pairing challenge in Vancouver than Vij’s.

Vikram has repeatedly stated that there are 5 layers of spices in many of his dishes and it takes a brilliant wine director choosing exceptional wines to pair with a wild spiced meal.

Chris Turyk new what he was doing when he and Father Tim brought their new releases in Vij’s last week and poured with Mike’s food choices.

We started with:

  • Charme De L’lle
  • Pinot Gris
  • Gewürztraminer
  • Allegro
  • Rose

2016 Pinot Noir and 2015 Reserve

And I think I saw some Tim Buck wine go by as well.

From the kitchen Mike presented:

  • Mini Mutton Kebabs
  • Sweet Potato and Spiced Ricotta  “cookies”
  • Lamb Popsicles
  • Spiced Cassava Fries
  • Vegetables (Cauliflower, spinach. potato)
  • Vegetable Papri

Mulligan Stew May 26th 2018- Steven Page Interview

hello

Saturday on CKUA’s Mulligan Stew Steven Page is our special guest.

How special?

Barenaked ladies had just been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  The National Music Centre in Calgary  had just opened an exhibition of BNL memorabilia

Steven was working on final mixes for his next album, a UK tour and extended tour of the USA later in the year, a second musical, speaking engagements on mental health and being the current Master in Residence at NMC. Working with up and coming artists on their songwriting!

Speaking of songwriting, Steven Page is credited with writing or co-writing 97 of 113 songs for Barenaked Ladies prime studio albums while he was a member.

Steven hasn’t exactly slowed down since leaving BNL in 2009.

Last Saturday night on the Victoria Day long weekend 300 music fans showed up at the NMC theatre to hear the 6 singer/songwriters he had been mentoring.

Then I sat down with Steven to talk all things Page.

Working with new talent

How If I had a  Million Dollars became a song that now belongs to the audience

A great Billy Bragg story

His memories of the Speakers Corner song BNL recorded for a Loony that got them play on MuchMusic and a career launch.

The Yellow Cassette that sold 100,000 copies

His pride in being an Indy band.

His thoughts on being an artist … as a job

The Juno Reunion of BNL

Being a solo artist

Being arrested – “ I was acquitted”

Mental Health issues which leads into his live performance of Brian Wilson (and an amazing Brian Wilson story)

And hey..the playlist below isn’t too shabby either.  Enjoy!!

The complete one hour interview can be heard if you subscribe to  Mulligan Stew The Podcast on Spotify, Google Play Music, and iTunes.

May 19th, 2018 – The BC Cider Festival!

hello

The BC Cider Festival Year 2.  The Cider makers pour at The Pipe Shop.

THE SHOW

Its Official..I’m a Certified Cider Head.

Happily, I don’t appear to be alone.

Lots of us are discovering that the sweet icky cider our parents consumed has disappeared. It’s been replaced by a growing army of cider makers..from around the World and best of all – right here in BC.

I had some catching up to do having missed the first BC Cider Festival.

I was delighted to find out that all of the participating ciders would be pouring at The Pipe Shop, foot of Lonsdale in North Vancouver.

The Pipe Shop

(The very shop that my Father,  HD “Pat” Mulligan worked in as WW2 was beginning)

I had a hunch that when they opened the main doors at 1:30 it was going to get crazy..and it did.

So, I started early as the tables were being set up and talked to as many Cideries as I could.

You can hear the room get louder and louder as first the staff worked the room, then the cider trade people tasted and finally when the  general public came in..I couldn’t even get near the tables and my work was done.

This was such a great  learning experience for me. My hope is that it’s the same for you.

There are so many great stories here. Ciders made from blends of apples, heritage apples planted and forgotten about over the years and apples discovered, grown and harvested in Vancouver’s East End.

Backyard apples made into first class Ciders.

I hope you  find your new  favourite cider in the next hour.  Cheers!!

Big thanks to Txotx Imports and Massey Wines.

hello

May 11, 2018
Singer, songwriter, and philanthropist Molly Johnson sits down with Terry this week to discuss her latest record, Meaning To Tell Ya. Molly talks about working with Grammy-award winning producer Larry Klein, who has worked on some of the greatest vocal jazz records of all time. She reflects on “being born into the business”, and the people who’ve shaped her life along the way. Plus, she chats with Terry about covers – why she loves performing them, why nobody other than k.d. lang should cover “Hallelujah”, and why she now enjoys singing Leonard Cohen songs.

Deane House – Calgary (Sal Howell & Chef Jamie Harling)

Sal Howell. Chef Jamie Harling @DeaneHouse Calgary (Leah Hennel post media)

Best New Restaurants of 2016: Alberta

“If a restaurant conceived by acclaimed restaurateur Sal Howell, with a menu created by chef Jamie Harling, wasn’t anything less than superb, I would have been sorrowfully disappointed. Lucky, there isn’t much to nitpick about when it comes to dining at what is currently one of the most buzz worthy restaurants in Calgary.”

December 3, 2016, by Dan Clapson The Globe and Mail

Sal Howell has earned awards and accolades over the years with the iconic River Café on Princes Island in the Bow River.

“Canada’s Best 100 2017”

Right around the  bend where The Bow meets The Elbow (the confluence as locals like to say)

Is Deane House. Moved there many years ago.

It’s a series of gorgeously decorated rooms, each with its own distinct character and like River Café is a champion of seasonal, local and sustainable food.

Chef Jamie Harling connects daily with local farmers and ranchers and his own on-site gardens.

Both River Café and Deane House have a solid connection to the sustainable fishing boats on the Coast.

I was passing through Southern Alberta  and couldn’t miss the opportunity to talk to Sal and Jamie about Calgary, Deane House and what their Summer looks like.

Savio Volpe  –  (Paul Grunberg. Chef Mark Perrier. Miguel Quezada)

Osteria Savio Volpe is a wildly success Italian Restaurant in Vancouver. There are three stories here.

Osteria Savio Volpe Limited Edition Barbera D’Asti Wine Collaboration
“One hundred cases of a custom Italian import available exclusively at Fraserhood neighbourhood bistro.”

A collaboration between Piedmont’s Cantina del Pino and Vancouver’s Osteria Savio Volpe, has now culminated  in a custom Barbera D’Asti  being sold by the bottle, exclusively at the Fraserhood restaurant.

The Barbera D’Asti costs $72 per bottle, and will be available until supplies last only at Osteria Savio                Volpe. Having tasted the wine..I can tell you it’s “delish” absolutely “delish”.

GM Miguel Quezada takes us through the story.

Co-Owner Chef Mark Perrier makes sense of how Savio Volpe evolved into the #14 restaurant in Canada.

It’s his menu and his concept.  Well Done Chef.

And finally the best story yet!

The ownership team at Savio has just bought Nick’s Spaghetti House. One of the oldest (1955) and most iconic restaurants in Vancouver. First they  confirmed  that Nick Felicella wasn’t being pushed out but rather retiring.

They also had to make a decision..is it another Savio Volpe or a rebranding of Nick’s?

Rebranding was the only way to go.

The rest of the story unfolds on the show.

Mulligan Stew May 5th 2018-Shakey Graves, Donovan Woods Interviews

hello

It’s the last Stew on Roundhouse Radio.  At this point no one knows what will happen next.

It was a wild ride.

HOWEVER, Mulligan Stew carries on.

It’s in its 22nd year on CKUA Radio.  Province wide in Alberta .

Every Saturday 5-7PM Mtn (4-6 Pacific)

Streamed on the CKUA App. And on the website www.ckua.com

And now it’s a PODCAST

Mulligan Stew  Music.Film.Food.Wine on Spotify, Google Play Music and iTunes.

Our Special Guests this week both have brand new albums

Shakey Graves – Can’t Wake Up.  His 5th in 7 years.  From a One man Band with a suitcase to headliner. Shakey delivers!!

Donovan Woods – Establishing himself as a consummate singer/songwriter.  Doesn’t seek fame just an audience to call his own.

Album is called Both Ways.

From The Austin Chronicle

In December, Shakey Graves tweeted, “Next album. New sound. Sell your suspenders.”

Droll, but even then it was hard to imagine Austin son Alejandro Rose-Garcia forgoing the sound that collages his growing body of work. Out of his trademark suitcase kick-drum, 2011 debut Roll the Bones tumbled forth bedroom intimacy and playfulness, an old-timey, distinctly Southwestern collusion of acoustica – guitar, banjo, harmonica, hand claps – and even a telling Springsteen cover, ‘billy bomp “I’m on Fire.” That began buzz throughout his hometown but quick.

The Donor Blues EP (2012) retained said stripped folk jig, but national breakout And the War Came two years later offered full-band bravado and high-watt jams, launching Shakey Graves beyond a homegrown hero turned FridayNight Lights cult TV actor. Third proper full-length Can’t Wake Up now completes his metamorphosis into an exceptional songwriter whose songs manifest into cinematic novellas. Characters living therein and their actions come to life in dreamy detail.”

Couldn’t have said it better.

Alejandro began his music career with a buskers mentality on stage – without ever really busking out on the streets.

His was a solo act with a suitcase for a drumkit. Then a 3 piece and now a full band backs him up.

In 2015 he was named Best Emerging Artist at the Americana Music Awards.

Now, here he is 5 albums in 7 years. The latest –just released – is Can’t Wake Up. It’s a heady mix of folk, blues, rock and roots.

He’s an actor, singer/songwriter and an artist. He designed the montage for the album cover.

His Father was a film set designer so you know his stage show will be special.

He IS coming our way..Massey Hall Toronto is sold out, as is Montreal show. He’s at Regina Folk Festival in August, which is the heart of the festival season in the West.

So…who knows!

He may he Shakey but he’s also a  charming soul.

Donovan Woods.

We welcome back an old friend – Canadian born, Nashville based singer/songwriter Donovan Woods and his new album  Both Ways.

Donovan can’t be called a country singer but he has country fans. He’s a folkie who shows up at Jazz festivals.

Even though he’s a really fine performer I think it’s his songwriting that will eventually make him a star.

Frankly, as he admits in this interview, stardom is not exactly what he’s looking for.
“Just a 1000 people in a room”  With hopefully a  series of ever-expanding rooms.

Both Ways ought to do the trick.

He’s just passed through the West but I do believe DW will be back before the summer is over.

Both RAW interviews will find their way onto the Mulligan Stew Podcast.

Enjoy!
