Ep 54 | Colin Linden Podcast

hello

May 6, 2019

Terry talks to Colin Linden about his latest release – a collaboration with Luther Dickinson titled ‘Amour’, backed by The Tennessee Valentines featuring Dominic Davis (bass), Bryan Owings (drums), Fats Kaplin (violin and accordion), and Kevin McKendree (keys). Plus, Colin shares some big news for Blackie and the Rodeo Kings fans.

Mulligan Stew July 22nd 2017- Bare Naked Ladies-Bruce Cockburn-Colin Linden Interviews

hello

“He’s one of them”
It’s the very special  Vancouver Island Music Festival. In Courtney/Comox.
Very special because of the location and because of Doug Cox – the Artistic Director.
Doug is an artist and working musician.
So his knowledge of who’s making great music and who should be paired with who is bang on.
Artists want to play his festival because they know Doug will take care of them and their music.
He’s one of them.
That’s why you’ll find Emmylou Harris headlining.
Robert Randolf and the Family band headlining.

Barenaked Ladies return to Canada. The USA has had their attention for many years and the Ladies wanted to make up for that.
It’s possible there’s a generation that may not know they’re Canadian.
All four guys sat down and talked about how they dealt with losing Stephen Page.
(What that first gig was like at a small venue –  Universal Studios Los Angeles)
Their latest album is a session with The Persuaders, one of music’s greatest vocal groups.

We spend 30 minutes talking to and playing the music of BNL.
I had a chance to set up a rustic studio behind the main stage backstage area.
Rustic means
A microphone
A cable
A recorder
Earphones
A glass of water

Bruce Cockburn was the Saturday headliner.  He’s about to release perhaps his best album ever.
Bone on Bone is released Sept 15 with a collection of songs and riffs that amaze and delight.  Totally cool album.

We’ll run the complete interview closer to the release date but on this show we’ll play the first single States I’m in and, for the first time anywhere 40 years in the wilderness.

Colin Linden produced Bone on Bone.  They have been a musical pair for many projects and many years.  Colin takes us through a quick tour of Bone on Bone.
Also guesting are:

  • Steve Dawson
  • Peter North and Tom Coxworth
  • Rachelle Van Zanten
  • Doug Cox

March 18th, 2017-Unsworth and a gaggle of Somms

hello

A Gaggle of Vancouver Sommeliers gathers at Unsworth Vineyards in the Cowichan Valley.  Can’t wait to talk to them.

Includes Somm of the Year Shane Taylor from CinCin!

(check  the outstanding names below)

Richard Da Silva from Misconduct/Naramata Bench guests as well and we finish with one of the best wine minds in the music business

Colin Linden from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

THE SHOW

As soon as I got the invite from Ron Bogdonov GM at Unsworth Vineyards in the Cowichan Valley Vancouver Island I knew it was just too good to pass up.

Chris Turyk, son of owner Tim Turyk and a seriously good wine guy who worked  at Hawksworth!

Chris invited his Sommelier friends in Vancouver and they all agreed to fly over on three planes to spend the day touring the cellars at Unsworth and then finishing with food and wine pairings  in their wonderful dining room.

Chris Turyk

Over 30 in total..all with sharp minds and even sharper tongues.

I recorded the highlights of the tour to start the show  – so you get to take it in as well.

Between the time the lunch ended and the buses left  for the return flight I started asking questions of them – 3 at a time.

Below are the really fun results.  We’re talking Unsworth, Cowichan, Trends, 2017 etc.

Peter Van Der Reep – Campagnolo Roma

Lisa Haley – L’ Abattoir

Kurtis Kolt – The Georgia Straight

Bryant Mao – Wine Director Hawksworth/Nightingale

I’m drawn to people  in the food and wine business who walk their own path. As a result they usually always make distinctive wines,  with character and focus.

Richard da Silva of Misconduct Wine Co on the Naramata Bench is one of those kind of people.

He makes the suspect and bootleg series of wines. (do you see a theme here)

First off, his family have been growers in the valley for years.  That alone puts him well ahead in the race for fruit and harvest standouts. It shows in his wines.  Blends, single growth varietals and seriously good food wines.

It helps that his food partner  in The Kitchen is a really good chef, Abul Adame.  Mexican born. French trained. He’s one of the very best anywhere in the valley. Over 30 Tapas with a large variety of options.

Love talking to Richard.  He’s a storyteller..it’s just that some of the stories “he can’t tell”.

…and finally it’s the semi-annual return of Colin Linden. Musician, Poet, singer/songwriter/producer and a very good friend.

Colin Linden

As he passed through Vancouver with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings we paused to do the usual music interview but then….5 seconds later I’m always asking the same question “what are you drinking” ?

Here’s four minutes of wine talk between two guys with only two minutes to spare.
