RAW Interviews

Mulligan Stew January 27th 2018- Jesse Roper and Jim Cuddy Interviews

hello

Hours after this show had been recorded and sent, I found out that my friend Tommy Banks had died.

Musician, mentor, humanitarian, Senator and one of the best people I had ever met,  Tommy Banks is very much woven into the fabric that is Canada.

The kind of person who will always be remembered by anyone who met or even knew him.

He brought light to our lives and that light has dimmed but not gone out.

He’s left music and memories.

He should be honored at this year’s Junos in Vancouver and frankly, I would suggest a permanent award in his honor.

Whatever that park is named adjacent to CKUA Radio on Jasper Ave in Edmonton should be renamed, Tommy Banks Park.

Goodbye Tommy …

Mulligan Stew

8:00-10 PM

It feels like Jesse Roper is just beginning what could be a fabulous career in music. He’s just released this third album called Access to Infinity which is released Friday, Feb 2. He’s more than paid his dues. Playing stages big and small getting his name and his songs out there.

Jesse is a really good songwriter, vocalist, and performer but man can he play guitar.

We talk about his influences and I hear Jimi and Carlos Santana in his playing.  Thankfully he agreed.

His third album is called Access to Infinity.  I can’t wait to play certain tracks after “the embargo” is lifted.

Jesse’s touring with Big Wreck and the dates are below.

Jim Cuddy RAW interview Jim Cuddy Constellation RAW Jan 2018

Jim Cuddy, co-founder, and co-leader of Blue Rodeo has released his fourth solo album “Constellation”  Friday under the name of The Jim Cuddy Band.

Jim and I work our way through several of the songs he wrote and he mentions there’s a balance in the album between loss and love.

It takes a true songwriter to find that balance. As Jim says “I wanted to waste not one word on this album.”

We talk about the koss of Gord Downey.  The battle John Mann is waging.  The title track called “Constellations” (with an s) is about yet another friend battling Cancer and what his loss meant.

Jim also lights right up when I mention his upcoming 33 date tour.

“33 doesn’t sound right. It should be 35”

He wants to create a tour like Motown used to do. Various artists all sharing microphones and supporting each other.

That would make Jim Marvin Gaye and Barney Bentall Tammi Terrell.

The full line up is The Jim Cuddy Band.  Wicked Good.

Then Barney Bentall and his new album.

Jim’s sons Sam and Devin.

This is going to be a memorable tour. One musical generation handing the flame to the next!!

Tour dates below  Jesse First and Jim Cuddy

Mulligan Stew-West Coast- Oct 21st- Guest Grant Lawrence & Dirty Windshields-Repeat

hello

Grant Lawrence co-founded the band The Smugglers in his parents basement in West Vancouver.
They blazed through the 90’s..starting with church gigs arranged by friend Nardwuar, the human serviette.
Grant went on to become a freaking BROADCASTER of all things – at CBC..still to this very day and a national figure.
Bangs out books plays goalie, has a wonderful family and has released the book Dirty Windshields.
It’s about The Smugglers journey through the 90’s and how they somehow not only survived but carved out a career around the World.
Grant brings stories of he and a Python meeting in at pay phone  while being live on air.
Stories of he and Nardwuar knocking on my door in West Van on Halloween night..not for treats but advice on the music and radio business.
And I didn’t slam the door.
He reminds me that I’m in two Smugglers videos etc.
How does he remember all this?
Because he kept a diary.  Ingenious!
Corey Wood, webmaster, has placed  The RAW interview Here.  Enjoy!!

Dirty Windshields is the long-awaited memoir from CBC host and award-winning author Grant Lawrence, baring all the salacious and hilarious details from his touring days as the lead singer of Vancouver-based rock and roll band The Smugglers. Formed when most of the members were still in high school, The Smugglers came of age during the height of the grunge explosion in the early 1990s, when Grant, working as a concert promoter, put on shows for Nirvana, Green Day and Bad Religion, among many others.
In Dirty Windshields, Grant chronicles the band’s booze-fueled, sweaty, broke and wayward attempts at rock and roll glory as they trekked across Canada, the United States, and eventually, Europe and the Pacific Rim. In their sixteen years of touring, the Smugglers experienced all the highs and lows the road can offer, from playing a gig at New York’s legendary CBGB club to starting a riot in a Denver nightclub to having their performance tuxes stolen in Australia.

Through the fights, sexual misadventures, new friendships, dance contests and mayhem, the band grew up together on the road. Told with Grant’s signature self-deprecating wit, the anecdotes develop into a compelling story of the growth of an independent, do-it-yourself touring band, a community, and a musical movement. So crack open a semi-cold can of Black Label beer, stick a Smugglers tape into the cassette deck and let the good times roll.

Mulligan Stew March 4th 2017- Tom Cochrane Interview!

hello

Tom Cochrane is starting his Mad Mad World 25th anniversary tour this week in the West.
That’s the album that gave us Life is a Highway. And many fans for Tom.
26 years ago Tom and I had traveled to Malawi, Ethiopia, Mozambique and other African nations on behalf of World Vision.
He guests on Saturdays Stew and we have lots to talk about.
Tom and I have always talked..we’ve developed a shorthand over the years.
There was a moment in the skies over Africa in a small prop plane in the middle of a violent storm,  where be both looked at each other and said “ we may not get through this”.
Tom was in the co-pilot seat..I thought that was a good sign.
Those kinds of things pull you together.
We both came back to Canada changed humans.
You can’t walk through camps where people die in front of you and not be changed.
Thankfully, when you leave the tents where the life or death battle takes place…you’re greeted by the cured,  the healed and the just plain lucky.
They sing, they dance, they celebrate being alive.
It shows itself in Tom’s music

David Bowie-Raw Interviews with Terry David Mulligan

hello

David Bowie has left the stage.
A magnetic personality who drew generations of fans to him by his very being.
So regal in his character that he could have been royalty.
Actually, he was rock royalty.
He spoke the truth and wrote a truth that few matched, blending his words into and through the music.
I had the amazing luck to spend one glorious night with him in his suite in Vancouver
He had just flown in from Japan and was just beginning his day as we were ending ours. He warned me he could talk for hours because of jet lag.
And so we did.. After the camera ran out of tapes..an hour I think, we just sat and talked. About family, children, jazz, Canada and Vancouver in particular.
The man was the kindest, nicest, most thoughtful artist I ever interviewed.
His loss numbs my heart but his influence  and his music will live on.
TDM

Jeff Healey & Colin James Interview – 1989

hello

Much Music in the 70’s and 80’s was a place of magic, where anything could happen and DID happen.
For Example…
I was able to convince my fellow West coaster Colin James to sit in with Jeff Healey to riff on a couple tunes.
BUT…if they worked my name into the lyrics they got 5 bucks EACH!
This is fine music with a great vibe. I treasure it.
Enjoy!

December 12th 2015 – Jann Arden Interview

hello

Jann Arden is our special guest and I do mean special.
We haven’t seen each other or even spoken for at least 15 years..
After years of talking in front of the Much Music cameras
We have mutual friends and a mutual love for great music.
Jann’s recorded 12 albums. 19 Top Ten singles.
Won many awards including multiple Junos.
She recently lost her Father.
Her Mother is battling Alzheimer’s with the help of Jann and her friends.
She’s just finished writing her first novel.
christmas-packshot
Her first Christmas album – A Jann Arden Christmas – is a best seller. Produced by Bob Rock!
She guests on a Christmas special Sunday night on The Social.
She wrote on-line about looking after aging parents and was shocked to have I Million people around the world read her words.
She’s been with the same label – Universal – for her whole career, which really didn’t begin until she was 30.
And she’s managed by the best – Bruce Allen.  What a pair!
And so..whatever would Jann and I have to talk about?
You’d be surprised what Jann reveals on this show.
She’s covered in well earned fame and profile today but waaay back when, during one wet and cold Christmas, she busked on the streets of Gastown in Vancouver.
It’s an amazing story she shares..very open and honest.
We welcome Jann Arden to Mulligan Stew.

Mulligan Stew October 10th 2015 – Maria Muldaur Interview

hello

-Maria-Muldaur3
Not long ago Maria Muldaur realized it had been 40 years since “Midnight at the Oasis,”.  She  had released 40 albums in her career.
“Instead of going into the studio to do the 41st, I should take the time to reflect and celebrate. It has been an amazing musical adventure.”
She’s currently on the road doing  her “Way Past Midnight” multimedia show.
Listen to the RAW INTERVIEW HERE:

It’s a mix of old photos and moments in her life. She adds the music and the stories and you’re left with a fabulous evening.
“I am always most excited about the newest material I am doing, and other songs get put back on the shelf or dropped. Fans call out for old favorites, but we just don’t have time to do them. This time we are pulling them out, along with doing up-to-date songs. Loyal fans have almost universally told me, ‘This is the best show of all time we have ever seen you do.’ They call it an ‘informance,’ since they are also learning a little bit from the stories.”
Muldaur lives in the San Francisco Bay area, where she often performs when not on tour. She estimates she does about 150 shows a year. In 2013, she appeared as a special guest with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, and toured with the Campbell Brothers, a sacred steel gospel group, for their presentation “Spirit & the Blues.”

She was a member of the Jerry Garcia Band in the late ’70s.
Maria  says that her type of American roots music is having “a huge resurgence. There are more blues, old-time music and fiddle festivals than ever. When I want to find extra musicians, they are all touring Europe.” She credits the film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” with starting a revival of the music her generation learned from old 78 records.
“There is no help from the aboveground media. You won’t read about it in People magazine. But young people hear it after decades of junk music and wonder, ‘What’s that sound?'”
Our second guest is someone you may have heard of Allison Brock. Al and her friends have organized next weekend’s Wide Cut Weekend http://www.widecutweekend.com/
Roots music is a big part of our identity, so let’s build this thing. Let’s celebrate our homegrown artists. Let’s bring this thing home. Just sayin’. . . #yeefreakinhaw
