There are few artists capable of appealing to music fans of all stripes, and Alan Doyle is one of them. From the moment he burst onto the scene in the early 1990s with his band Great Big Sea, Canadians fell in love with the pride of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, whose boundless charisma and sense of humor was eclipsed only by his magnetic stage presence.

His influence is now being heard in a new generation of artists as his solo work continues to endear him to roots music fans everywhere. Alan’s new EP Rough Side Out, finds him collaborating with Canadian country music superstars Dean Brody and Jess Moskaluke, while at the same time defining his interpretation of contemporary country.

The seeds for Rough Side Out were planted in 2012 when Brody asked Great Big Sea to record the song “It’s Friday” with him for the Platinum-selling album Dirt. For Alan, that was the moment he realized the door to the country music world was open for he and other east coast Celtic-leaning artists, and since then he’s warmly embraced building closer ties. “My personal journey with the whole thing has been very organic,” Alan says. “When my parents weren’t listening to traditional folk music, they were listening to country music on the radio. So, when I began creating my own musical identity, I was inspired by artists who were able to blend those two worlds.”

Coverage of the 5^th Annual Garagiste North – Kelowna

THE SHOW

What is a garagiste? (gar-ah-jeest)?

It started out in France (of course) where it was a derogatory phrase for those avante garde and crazy mavericks making wine in their garage and outside the highly regulated system. Gradually and grudgingly came the acknowledgement that something really interesting was happening with these small case lot artisan wines, and a movement was born.

Garagiste North brings together the small guys. Wines produced from 100% Canadian grapes and under 2000 cases total production annually.

We’ve been covering this gathering of small BC producers from the beginning. We like the people, the wines and the no BS approach to farming, creating and selling.

This year Sperling Vineyards was once again the site for a gathering of the Garagiste. Many of the favourites are returning, but with the growth of the wine industry we are excited to see new small wineries popping up.

The likes of Lightning Rock, Scorched Earth and Burnt Timer all seem to have a theme! Added to this year’s event will be a wine pairing of Sperling Vineyards and cheese, music by Glendale Avenue, food truck service from CrAsian, a cool booth by Taste Advisor and a pop up wine store by Fairview Cellars.

This event gives you an insight into the passion, commitment, craziness and excellence that is the hallmark of a small producer. We love that for many this is their first time showing off their wines to the public. Others have been attending for awhile, carefully crafting their wines and growing their business and reputation. Saturday night we’re going to be Dancing with Laura.

Laura Ryan-Walsh passed away October 9 2017.

She was a teacher and a great Mother. From Newfoundland but spent most of her life in Calgary

Long-time listener to CKUA and Mulligan Stew.

Her daughters Erin, Megan, and their Father Adrian all were involved in this one-hour donation.

The Ryan and Walsh families will be listening in Calgary, St John’s, Florida, Dubai, and Grande Prairie.

Laura loved great music and she passed that love on to her family and friends.

The Stones, Cohen, Van, Otis, Aretha, Dylan, Neil Young, The Band, and the blues. We’ll play them all.

Old Crow Medicine Show

Including Wagon Wheel from Old Crow Medicine Show ..which for Laura’s birthday the family rewrote the lyrics to.

I’m told that in the final weeks of her life..she asked for and received a small radio beside her bed so she could listen to CKUA and The Stew.

Toward the end of her life when she could no longer walk, a nurse walking by her hospital room commented that she was always smiling.

Laura replied “You’ve got to smile if you can’t dance”

EP 90 | Daniel Lanois

I used to see musician Daniel Lanois at least once a year as he toured Canada with various bands..pedal steel was his specialty.

I can’t begin to explain the joy I had watching his career explode.

From his music-filled home growing up in Hull, Que to his Mothers move to Hamilton Ontario

Daniel and his brother Bob were born to play and sing.

They built a small studio in her basement and that became their light at the end of the tunnel.

Daniel produced enough music with local bands that the one and only Brian Eno asked to meet him and they started working together.

This lead to Grammy-winning albums with U2, Bob Dylan plus Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, The Neville Brothers, Willie Nelson.

Think about the body of work…Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Oh Mercy, Time out of Mind, Wrecking Ball, So & Us just as a starter.

-Needless to say, I hadn’t seen Daniel for many years – 21 to be exact – when I found him backstage at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival of a couple of years ago.

We started trying to figure out where we last saw each other…

It was a studio in Calgary recording a charity single called Land – with The Tragically Hip, Midnight Oil, Crash Vegas, Hothouse Flowers, etc.

The single was Land – to bring awareness to clear cut logging in Clayoquot Sound.

The 5^th Pinot Noir Celebration in Kelowna

THE SHOW

The 2019 BC Pinot Noir Celebration brings together BC’s top 35 Pinot Noir producers for an unforgettable festival-style tasting experience. The event kicked off with a reception and keynote address by Madeline Puckette, certified sommelier and author of New York Times Bestseller, Wine Folly: The Essential Guide to Wine.

To put this gathering in proper perspective, here’s an overview from writer/judge Kurtis Kolt:

My big take-away is how local Pinot Noir reflects its terroir of origin, rather than its producers trying to emulate other iconic Pinot regions around the world, from Burgundy in France to the Russian River Valley in California.

No matter which B.C. region it hailed from, each one had a freshness and purity of fruit, along with juicy acidity—a common trait in B.C. wine. I was quite impressed that compared to other reds—from Bordeaux-inspired blends to Syrah—the B.C. Pinot Noirs were all tasty and approachable, whether we were looking at current, more fruit-forward releases, or bottlings as far back as a 2006 from Averill Creek on Vancouver Island. It had started to exhibit those more savoury, tertiary notes like sarsaparilla and sun-dried tomato, but still had great structure and was buoyant on the palate.

Kurtis, who guests on this special, makes the comment that Pinot Noir is the one wine that can be grown from coast-to-coast in Canada.

All 35 wineries pouring at the event were accepted through a high profile sommelier tasting panel. They were determined to be the best of the best.

Ran across a headline that reminded us/me that we have just gone through a music time warp.

As 2019 turned into 2020 and a new decade ..it also became 50 years since 1969 became 1970.

Here’s a list of artists and albums who made the transition from one decade to another. FIFTY FREAKING YEARS AGO.

And they didn’t just transition – they became #1 albums that changed lives and made history.

The biggest was The Beatles Abbey Road – #1 for 11 straight weeks

Led Zeppelin 2 – #1 for 6 weeks

Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge over troubled water 10 weeks at #1

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young – Deja Vu #1 for a week

It was a comment about a year ago. Almost blew by me. A winemaker used the phrase “I’m making Winter Whites”.

I’m sorry – what?

Chiwetel Ejoifor – (12 Years a slave/Lion King)

And our special Guest Kasi Lemmons

For three decades Kasi has been an award winning director, writer, actress and educator.

She directed her latest film Harriet to great acclaim. It’s the story of iconic American heroine and civil rights pioneer Harriet Tubman.

The second guest is a friend, Shawn Edwards. BFCA film critic who helped to bring the awards to reality and hopes to become a filmmaker himself.
