Mulligan Stew Feb 22 2020- Andy Shauf – The Neon Skyline

hello

For those music fans who discovered the seductive narrative of  Andy Shauf through his last album The Party, just know that he’s hooked up with three of the party-goers and headed for The Skyline Bar in Parkdale, Toronto.

There’s his buddy Charlie, Rose the bartender and  Judy.

Oh!  His ex is in the bar as well.

You just don’t hear concept albums and certainly not concept songwriting and production at this level.

PhotoCreditColinMedley

Amy van Keeken, who knows a thing or two about songwriting wrote me a note ..

The Neon Skyline is so good. Listening to the whole album start to finish

in one go (like people used to do) adds a deeper level of meaning to the songs and the narrative.  It’s brilliant”

Andy’s buddies Foxwarren are up for a Juno Award March 15 but Andy will be in Bourdeaux on tour.

I’ve asked Andy to leave his acceptance speech with us in our chat.

The rest of our two-hour show features handpicked Saturday night music.

Mulligan Stew Feb 15th 2010-The Bard & The Beatles

hello

For centuries scholars have debated whether William Shakespeare actually wrote the plays attributed to him. How about  John Lennon, George Harrison  or Paul McCartney?

Opening tonight at The Citadel in Edmonton, director Daryl Cloran weaves  two dozen Beatles’ songs into the text of As You Like It, set in 1960s Vancouver and “the wild Okanagan.“

EP 94 | Daryl Cloran Shakespeare and the Beatles

hello

William Shakespeare’s As you like it has been called his Romantic Comedy (RomCom).

It’s got laughs,   love and rejection, women dressed as men, men dressed as wrestlers.

And Director Daryl Cloran was challenged to weave  the magic of The Beatles into the dialogue.

Instead of soliloquies..we get I am the Walrus.

25  Beatles songs, William Shakespeare AND wrestling.  Let’s go.

Opens tonight at The Citadel in Edmonton

“As You Like” by RMTC and Citadel performed at the John Hirsch Mainstage as part of the master playwrights festival.

“As You Like It” cleverly blends Shakespeare’s gift with language and 25 Beatles songs performed live, including She Loves YouI Want to Hold Your HandLet It Be and Here Comes the Sun. Will you love it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

“Like it? I loved it. This one’s a hit.” –  Georgia Straight

“You’d have to be a real nowhere man not to be on your feet and singing along.” -Vancouver Sun

Tickets for the first week are nearly sold out. Book yours, and make sure to arrive early for the pre-show Superstar Wrestling match!

“As You Like It” runs from Feb 15 – Mar 15, 2020 at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre.

Music begins at 7:05 p.m. Wrestling begins at 7:15 p.m.
More info at www.citadeltheatre.com

EP 92 | Colin Linden and Tom Wilson

hello

Although they each have successful solo careers, Colin Linden,  Tom Wilson, and road warrior  Stephen Fearing together are Blackie and The Rodeo Kings.

In 2020 the boys celebrate being together and making music for 25 years.

How did they kick off 2020?

Jan 4 they played The  Ryman Theatre, home of The Grand Ol’ Opry.

Stephen Fearing packed his bags and went touring his solo album  The Unconquerable Past!

Colin won a Grammy for Keb Mo’s Oklahoma,  which Colin co-produced in his home studio in Nashville.
Just days ago  Tom Wilson gets a Juno nomination for Lee Harvey Osmond.

And Blackie releases King of this Town.

The coming tour may take the entire year!

What started off in  1996 as a one-off tribute album in celebration of the music of Willie P Bennett has evolved into 25 years of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Quite simply one of Canada’s finest bands.  Ever!!

Enjoy the stories!

Mulligan Stew Feb 8th 2020-Mexico Themes!

hello

For over 80 years CKUA has been donor supported.  The human engine that keeps us on-air and moving forward.

So when program donors plunk down the big dough to sponsor an hour of The Stew I pay attention to what they are saying.

I’ve become friends with many of them.

For example..the first hour Saturday is sponsored by Mary and Graeme.  They’ve been here many times..we ended up fishing together.

This shows they’re in Mexico and suggested tunes with Mexico themes or references.

So…

James Taylor – Mexico

Jim Byrnes – Postcard from Mexico

Los Lobos – La Bamba

Carlos  Santana and Willie Nelson – They all went to Mexico

Taj Mahal – Senior Blues

Duke Robillard – Down in Mexico

Texas Tornados – Adios Mexico

Linda Ronstadt – Por un Amor

Our second donor Michael..suggested tracking some Barney Bentall music

Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts – Something to live for

Barney – Hey Mama from The Drifter and the Preacher

The Radio Grande – King of July

Then we go out in a blaze of glory

Paul Simon

February 8th, 2018 – 15th Victoria Whisky Festival!

hello

15th Victoria Whisky Festival

THE SHOW

Each year, every January  the Victoria Whisky Festival attracts distilleries, and the people who love them, from every corner of the globe. Distillers, distillery managers and brand ambassadors from over 50 distilleries travelled  to Victoria from Scotland, Ireland, England, Canada, United States, Japan, Taiwan, India and France. Collectively they presented over 200 whiskies,  showing a broad range of styles, flavour profiles and whisky philosophies.

The tenth annual Canadian Whisky Awards gala  recognized the best whiskies in the country.

Distillers from across Canada were  in attendance seeking the recognition of major awards including Best Single Malt Whisky, Best Blended Whisky, Blender of the Year, Best New Whisky, Whisky of the Year and others.

In 2019, BC Distilleries had their strongest showing yet with major awards going to Vancouver Island’s Shelter Point Distillery for Innovation and de Vine Winery and Distillery for Best Whisky Spirit as well as a number of medals awarded.

Cheers!

Rob Carpenter – (Scotch Malt Whisky Society-Holyrood Distillery UK)

In Jan 2018 inspectors from the B.C. Liquor Control and Licensing Branch raided Scotch Malt Whisky Society Partner Bars in B.C.,

with 242 bottles of SMWS whisky being seized from Fets Whisky Kitchen.

Rob Carpenter (co-founder of the Canadian branch of the SMWS), together with one of Fets’ owners and a lawyer, presented a tasting of some beautiful single cask Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings interspersed with an account of what happened, the legal issues, and the current situation, including the impact on BC whisky, wine, and beer enthusiasts and what can be done going forward.

Rob is very connected on both sides of the Atlantic and he wants whisky fans to know about #freeourwhisky – a movement to focus on government bureaucracy when it comes to whisky. The man speaks the truth and exposes our liquor bullies.
