Mulligan Stew January 27th 2018- Jesse Roper and Jim Cuddy Interviews

hello

Hours after this show had been recorded and sent, I found out that my friend Tommy Banks had died.

Musician, mentor, humanitarian, Senator and one of the best people I had ever met,  Tommy Banks is very much woven into the fabric that is Canada.

The kind of person who will always be remembered by anyone who met or even knew him.

He brought light to our lives and that light has dimmed but not gone out.

He’s left music and memories.

He should be honored at this year’s Junos in Vancouver and frankly, I would suggest a permanent award in his honor.

Whatever that park is named adjacent to CKUA Radio on Jasper Ave in Edmonton should be renamed, Tommy Banks Park.

Goodbye Tommy …

Mulligan Stew

8:00-10 PM

It feels like Jesse Roper is just beginning what could be a fabulous career in music. He’s just released this third album called Access to Infinity which is released Friday, Feb 2. He’s more than paid his dues. Playing stages big and small getting his name and his songs out there.

Jesse is a really good songwriter, vocalist, and performer but man can he play guitar.

We talk about his influences and I hear Jimi and Carlos Santana in his playing.  Thankfully he agreed.

His third album is called Access to Infinity.  I can’t wait to play certain tracks after “the embargo” is lifted.

Jesse’s touring with Big Wreck and the dates are below.

Jim Cuddy RAW interview Jim Cuddy Constellation RAW Jan 2018

Jim Cuddy, co-founder, and co-leader of Blue Rodeo has released his fourth solo album “Constellation”  Friday under the name of The Jim Cuddy Band.

Jim and I work our way through several of the songs he wrote and he mentions there’s a balance in the album between loss and love.

It takes a true songwriter to find that balance. As Jim says “I wanted to waste not one word on this album.”

We talk about the koss of Gord Downey.  The battle John Mann is waging.  The title track called “Constellations” (with an s) is about yet another friend battling Cancer and what his loss meant.

Jim also lights right up when I mention his upcoming 33 date tour.

“33 doesn’t sound right. It should be 35”

He wants to create a tour like Motown used to do. Various artists all sharing microphones and supporting each other.

That would make Jim Marvin Gaye and Barney Bentall Tammi Terrell.

The full line up is The Jim Cuddy Band.  Wicked Good.

Then Barney Bentall and his new album.

Jim’s sons Sam and Devin.

This is going to be a memorable tour. One musical generation handing the flame to the next!!

Tour dates below  Jesse First and Jim Cuddy

January 27th, 2018 – New York Times spotlights Canadian foods!

hello

Sam Sifton   NY Times Food Editor: Food and Politics

DJ Kearney – on NewDistrict.ca

Vikram Vij – VIJ. The Life and The Book

THE SHOW

The New York Times culinary  writers last week spent 7 days focusing on  Canadian cooking.

Sam Sifton, food editor for The Times lead the team.

Sam Sifton NYT -David McMillan – Joe Beef

In Toronto they were taken with the many Syrian refugees who landed in Canada and immediately started cooking Syrian food to an interested  clientele. It’s not something they would see south of the border. Politics would be involved “down there”.

The team also went to Montreal and met with David McMillan, the famous chef and co-owner of Joe Beef/Liverpool House.

David McMillan – Joe Beef

Certainly about the food but also about the unique politics involved in French Canadian cooking.

They’re very protective of Quebecoise cooking and nobody muddles those waters better than David. He brings British influences  into the mix and politically that’s a no no.

Sam also sent Food Critic. Pete Wells to Vancouver to review Kissa Tanto.

This is a very engaging conversation (mainly on Sam’s part) as the dialogue ebbs and flows around people, places and things.

A two part interview with Sam Sifton that also includes a brief but involved discussion about – The New York Times – as a headline. As a story unto itself.  Being repeatedly called out by The President of the USA.

My first question is “what’s it like in the building these days”?

www.NYTimes.com

DJ Kearney  – Director of Wine  NewDistrict.ca

DJ Kearney

Deej is one of the key tastemakers in Canada and most certainly on The West Coast.

She is now making waves as the Director of Wine at NewDistrict.ca

It’s a store and a wine-on-line destination.

Many many wine fans  believe in her taste and instincts.

DJ judges, lectures and instructs but what she does best is choose wines for all of us to consider.

Frankly, I’m like many wine fans. If it’s OK with DJ it’s OK with  me.

This week DJ runs through recent choices and wine trends we should know about.

www.newdistrict.ca

Vikram Vij  – VIJ   A chef’s one-way ticket to Canada with Indian spices in his suitcase

Vij – The Book

This interview takes us behind the legendary culinary and tv figure that we all know now.

Back to the very beginning..life in India. Coming to Canada… overcoming all odds to eventually open his own restaurant. It’s a fascinating story. So many hurdles to cross and hoops to jump. Fragrant with the smells of cumin, turmeric fennel and cloves, Vij reveals the story of Vikram Vij, one of Canada’s most celebrated chefs and entrepreneurs.

Co-owner of the world-famous Vij’s Restaurant in Vancouver, his story is a true rags-to-riches tale of a college dropout from northern India who made it to Europe’s temples of high cuisine, then with a one-way ticket bound for Canada, found fame serving some of the world’s most transcendent Indian cuisine.

Mulligan Stew Jan 20th 2018- Rhiannon Giddens Interview

hello

My first question was ..when I interviewed you three years ago with the Carolina Chocolate Drops..did you know your life was about to change?

Rhiannon – “Noooooooo”

It was all about The Drops..until Producer extraordinaire T-bone Burnett asked her to “use her voice”

And her thinking was ..”the stars aligned. When somebody comes and taps you on the shoulder..you need to Listen”

“T-bone told me “you’ve been hiding in that band and he was right.”

Now I’m here having sung Summertime in the original key and singing Waterboy with the SF Symphony and then the song  At the Purchasers Option. That’s what happens when you follow The Muse and when you get a chance to do these things..I’m going to follow where I’m led”

In talking about the road she’s travelled..Rhiannon Giddens told me/us

“I feel such a responsibility because my life is what my parents and grandparents fought for They fought so that I could think and write these songs.:

She mentions Pops and Mavis Staples and singing   Birmingham Sunday with  Joan Baez who’s been singing that song for 50 years and then completes the thought with..

“It completes a through line. Nobody creates in a vacuum. It’s all building blocks on somebody else’s work.”

“I want to talk and sing not about Donald Trump. I want to sing about how we got here. How we’re still here.  How can we expect a country that was  founded on

Genocide, slavery, on rampant capitalism bring us to roses and incense today?  I maintain that music is a cultural reflection of what’s going on. Let’s celebrate the beauty  while  keeping an eye out”

There’s a LOT more in this 30 minutes..a lot more.

Including songs from Tomorrow is my turn and Freedom Highway.

I’ve heard this interview many times since we did it backstage at the Edmonton Folk Fest and I’m still hearing and learning new things from it.

Remarkable conversation..  enjoy!

Know thy history. Let it horrify you; let it inspire you. Let it show you how the future can look, for nothing in this world has not come around before. These songs are based on slave narratives from the 1800s, African American experiences of the last century, and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and headlines from streets of Ferguson and Baltimore today. Voices demanding to be heard, to impart the hard-earned wisdom of a tangled, difficult, complicated history; we just try to open the door and let them through.” —Rhiannon Giddens

Freedom Highway, Grammy Award–winner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens’ follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn, was released by Nonesuch Records on February 24, 2017. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn‘s 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, “Birmingham Sunday” and Staple Singers’ well-known “Freedom Highway,” from which the album takes its name.

Giddens wrote of the title track:

“I am a daughter of the South; of the white working class, of the black working class; of the Democrat, and the Republican; of the gay, and the straight; and I can tell you one thing—we are far more alike than we are different. We cannot let hate divide us; we cannot let ignorance diminish us; we cannot let those whose greed fills their every waking hour take our country from us. They can’t take U.S. from US—unless we let them. I recorded this with Bhi Bhiman, all-American singer-songwriter from St. Louis, whose parents are from Sri Lanka. America’s strength are her people, whether they came 4,000, 400, or 40 years ago, and we can’t leave anyone behind. Let’s walk down Freedom Highway together. Written by Pops Staples in 1965.”

Rhiannon Giddens, who had previously won accolades and a Grammy Award as a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, made her solo debut with Tomorrow Is My Turn, which was one of 2015’s most highly praised albums; the New York Times said, “her voice is a perpetually soulful marvel,” The album was Grammy nominated, and Giddens received the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Singer of the Year. Earlier this year she won the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Bluegrass and Banjo.

She performed for President Obama and the First Lady on a White House Tribute to Gospel, along with Aretha Franklin, Emmylou Harris and Colin Linden

January 20th, 2018 – Dine Out Vancouver!

hello

It’s  Dine Out Vancouver Year 16 – Now until Feb 4th!

THE SHOW

How much fun is this?

There are over 300 restaurants signed up to host Dine Out Vancouver Food Fanatics and every year we keep creating bigger line ups.

It’s a great success story and one Vancouver and Tourism Vancouver can be proud of.

16 years ago it started as an idea.  As one of the originals Tim Pawsey says the idea was simply – “Let’s put Bums in Seats”

Juke fried chicken

This year the food media  gathered in the  H2 Restaurant/Bar   in The Westin Bayshore.  We ate small bites, tasting BC VQA wines and everyone was asking the same question – where are we going?

We were rounded up in groups  of 5 to 10 people and off we went in trolley cars and busses.

Victor at Parq

From what I can remember – this is what happened and who I talked to  –what a night!

Mulligan Stew Dec 12th 2017- No guests.  No interviews.  No specials.  Just pure killer tracks!

hello

We’ve cleared the decks…

No guests.  No interviews.  No specials.  Just pure killer tracks for a Saturday night in the DEAD OF WINTER.

We all could use music, food, sleep, and friends.

Got a Net message asking why I only played Stay with Me by The Faces.  I explained because it was one of rocks greatest songs.

It got me to thinking about what else I love about those guys.

They were buddies.  It showed on stage. The audience was part of the party.

Bottles of Mateus were stashed behind speakers and amps. They did have fun.

At the end of the night, the boys were making splendidly sloppy rock and roll.  It was perfect.

So..we start with THREE Faces songs.

Gasoline Alley (Live at The Fillmore)

Had me a real good time

Memphis Tennessee

And then we’re off with Chris Stapleton, Sting, Steely Dan, Rhiannon Giddons, Mark Knopfler, Fats, Taj, Townes, CoCo, Crazy Horse, Stones, Otis, Squib Cakes and Jackson Browne with The Load out and Stay.

Tonnes of Live tracks in here.

Enjoy. please raise a glass to The Faces.

Heads up – Working on a March 1st Juno Couch in Vancouver.

January 13th, 2018 – Spain & Portugal

hello

The 2018 VanWineFest is fast approaching… we’ll be on site March 1st  recording  two 1 hours shows.

The feature regions this year are Spain and Portugal.

So this week’s Tasting Room Radio will focus on those two wine producing countries.

Spain we know about. Big wines to go with robust foods and lifestyle.

Wines with the heroics of a bullfighter and the grace of a dancer.

Reds aged in bottle for two years before release for a fraction of the cost of other regions.

What’s not to like?

Portugal on the other hand is well under the radar BUT they also produce amazing wines.

Portugal

Some of their blends have 30-40-50 varietals all in one bottle.

Their wines are going to surprise and blow people’s minds this year.

Fonseca-Quinta-do-Panascal

This week we present  a primer on Spain and Portugal!

Guests include:

Cristiano van Zeller  – leading winemaker and unofficial spokesperson for The Douro Region.

Norrel Robertson – Spain’s only Master of Wine

Norrell Robertson

Domingos Suarez Franco – No relation to James and leading winemaker in Portugal.

Daenna van Mulligen

The Wine Diva returns from a visit to Fonseca in Portugal.

Terry and the Wine Diva

Mulligan Stew Jan 6th 2018- Dan Mangan Interview

hello

Saturday’s  show has 90 minutes of wall to wall music. A wicked mix of blues, R&B, Roots, pure great rock and roll (The Faces – Stay with Me, Springsteen Live in Dublin, The Sheepdogs Live at The Roxy LA, Jimi, Colin James, Imagine Dragons, Sarah McLachlan and – wait for it – Nancy Sinatra

The last 30 minutes features Dan Mangan. We talk a bit about what he’s currently working on but Dan really wants all of us to know about a movement he’s helping to lead.

Because of the imploding nature of today’s  music business artists really need a DIY movement and this is it.

It’s called Side Door Access www.sidedooraccess.com

“We are building a platform where artists can earn a living by trimming the overhead of touring. We help you find magical small spaces with dedicated hosts and attentive audiences.

We want to help create human, tactile experiences offline. Music, Speakers, Dance, Theatre, Comedy – you name it.”

They currently have 200 artists and 300 hosts and the movement is growing every week.

Dan explains how artists and hosts hook up..set a date, time and location and then tickets get sold. Friends are made, one gig at a time.

It’s a fascinating story…Let Dan Mangan be your narrator.

This show was sponsored by our friends

Barb andBbob Shaunessy – former owners of Tinhorn Creek.

They are the donor for first hour…

Played hockey over the Holidays in Invermere.

Right after The Stew they’re off to the Cook Islands!  Thank YOU!!

Team Sperling

One of the very best winemakers in Canada.

Creating outstanding, award-winning organic wines at Southbrook in Niagara and at her family’s estate outside Kelowna.

Sperling Vineyards has been certified Organic and that’s our starting point with Ann.

Ann Sperling

Why organic?  Other than the obvious decision to take care of the land around them..what else should wine fans watch for with the ever growing organic movement.

After all, more and more we are asking questions of our fish, food, and vegetables.  Where was this grown, is it local, is it wild or farmed, was it organically grown?  Why not our wines?

We spend time talking about her glorious Old Vines Riesling.

Loved listening to Ann. Truly at the top of her game!

January 5th 2019- Top Drop: two shows in one!

hello

It’s the return of Top Drop 2018.  A dozen World class wineries you should know about!

Top Drop – Two shows in one.

When I first pulled out the microphone I promised myself I wouldn’t go crazy and try to talk to all 40  wineries pouring at The Roundhouse in Vancouver. The 6th TOP DROP 2019 will happen May 23/24th.

But it was the Fifth Top Drop and it was the Liquid Love Child of Kurtis Kolt.

Kurtis Kolt

Kurtis is a wine educator, wine judge and wine columnist for The Georgia Straight.

When it comes to wines, he absolutely knows what he’s talking about.

Anyway, I again got carried away and did 12 interviews and this time  put them into one complete show.

Top Drop Vancouver returns  with a continued focus on sustainably-farmed, handcrafted wines offering a distinct sense of place, without heavy-handed winemaking trickery to get in the way.

This is what this fine small wine festival believes in.

They believe in the importance in farming one’s own fruit and/or being constantly engaged with grape-growers to ensure sustainability and a high standard of viticultural practices.

They believe in wines that reflect their vintage, and wines that aren’t suffocated by vinicultural trickery.

They believe in winemaking decisions that are made by a winemaker, and not by a board of directors or marketing team.

They believe in those who take chances.

They believe these kinds of wines, honest wines of integrity, need a time and place to have their story told.

They also believe craft beer, cider, along with authentic and sustainable produce, dairy, meat, and seafood are part of the same conversation, which is why they ’re proud to showcase some of the very best in those areas.

An Astonishing gathering of wine professionals.  Check out all the guests and details

  • Kurtis Kolt – Organizer and wine ambassador & educator. Wine writer for The Georgia Straight.
  • Paul Leary – President Blackbird Vineyards  (Napa)

Hello California!!

Mulligan Stew December 30th 2017-The Year End Stew – Best Interviews 2017

hello

Lots of interviews this year..so how do you pick the best of the best?
They pick you actually.
These interviews are the ones that stayed with me..resonated with truth,
passion and humour.
Two hours of the years most memorable interviews.. (and YES, I could have
done 3-4 more shows.)

Robbie Robertson – Original member and songwriter for The Band.  One of the
greatest most influential  groups ever. Talking about his book Testimony,
Dylan, The Last Waltz and writing The Weight!
The Wood Brothers – Wonderfully talented, gifted singers and songwriters.
Talking about The Band and their influence.
LeeRoy Stagger – Surely in the running for Top 100 albums of the year
Ron Sexsmith – Talking about The Last Rider and what his early years were
like.
Susan Tedeschi – Her husband Derek Trucks had to take another phone call but
Susan finished off our interview with some great thoughts about a  life in
music
Stephen Fearing – Talking about his single Blowhard Nation and what
influenced the song.

Rhiannon Giddens – It’s all about what happens to her when one of the most
influential Producers T Bone Burnett offers to produce a solo album so the
World can really hear her voice. Interview backstage at this year’s Edmonton
Folk Festival

The Juno Couch – Yes it was recorded in 2016 but I played this special and
portions of it all during 2017..so I fudged a bit.
It was worth it – interviews with Buffy St Marie, Tom Cochrane, Miranda
Mulholland, Matt Good and Alan Doyle. All on the Couch together.

Bruce Cockburn – His first interview for new album Bone on Bone. Again, a
must have on the Top 100. Talks about the song that started it all Three Al
Purdy’s for a $20 bill

Bare Naked Ladies – Interviewed them twice..this one in Nanaimo. Focused on
an album that did not get the recognition it deserved, with The Persuaders.
And how that collaboration changed the way BNL sing some of their songs.
Grant Lawrence – On his book on The Smugglers  Dirty Windshield.
This interview was about Grant and Nardwuar knocking on my door Halloween
Night.
Valerie June – again at the Edmonton folk festival. There’s also a YouTube
version of this CKUA interview. I expect her album will be Top 10, maybe
even Top 5

Huey Lewis – I really wanted to talk to Huey again,  as  I hadn’t seen him
for many years.  I loved his blues take on hit music. We shared a common
take on what was great music. I asked him what it felt like walking out on
stage after all these years..what went on inside of him when the audience
found its voice.
By the way – Most of these interviews will be –  In the Raw – on the
Mulligan Stew website . www.mulliganstew.ca<http://www.mulliganstew.ca>
And in January on the Mulligan Stew PODCAST
-TDM
