Mulligan Stew February 25th 2017- The Matinee & David Gogo Interviews

Two very special guests to Saturday’s Stew..
The Matinee return to Mulligan Stew with an edited version of their one hour special on the Roundhouse Radio Lobby Stage on Live from Railtown.
We last hosted them when they released We Swore we’d see the Sunrise, their debut LP. Produced by Steve Berlin from Los Lobos.
Since then they’ve been nominated for a Juno, were mistaken for The Sheepdogs and released an EP in 2015 called Broken Arrows and crossed Canada on tour SIX times.
Those tours took their toll..and the boys went their separate ways to recover and renew.
Now comes Dancing on your Grave with The Matts – Layzell and Rose plus original members Peter Lemon and Geoff Petrie.
(along with Georges Couling on keys and Marcus Abramzik on Bass)
Songs include the Title track, Blood Alley, Long Gone and Anna Lee.
The Matinee are a great live band..and they shine in these 30 minutes..artists and storytellers.

When I found Dave GoGo, wearing his Montreal Canadians PJ’s and Alex Chilton t shirt,  He  was high on GoGo Mountain south of Nanaimo.
Voted the best blues guitarist in the Land by his peers at the Canadian Blues Awards..he was prepping for some quick dates in Alberta and BC.

2 shows March 1 in Calgary..the first is in the  Church of the Redeemer  at Noon (Boggles the mind) ..and the National Music Centre at night.
Thursday finds him at the Ramada in Calgary
Then Edmonton Friday/Saturday at  The Blue Chair.
March 18th Dave’s at The Port Theatre in Nanaimo celebrating his birthday with guests, including Shaun Verreault, Shawn Hall (Harp and Axe) and David Vest.

Check out the best playlist anywhere.
The Wood Brothers open..Sam and Dave / Lightning Hopkins closes.
And in between Los Lobos, The Neville Bros Live at Tipitina’s, The new Harp and Axe, Frazey Ford, Sting,  Colin James & 54-40

Mulligan Stew January 21st 2017- Healing Music…Joey Landreth, Delbert McClinton , and more…

Had a thought this week about the Power of Music to heal.
At this point in my life I don’t have to be convinced that music DOES heal. I see it all the time.
Mostly it’s to help humans deal with loss, sickness, separation and both fear and joy.
But THIS week involves something we haven’t seen in a long long time..a feeling that something is not right with our friends in the USA.
Friendships are truly being tested, facts are being fudged and an unsettled queasy feeling covers the day.
So..can music help the journey? Frankly, it’s a lot to ask of music but I believe there’s healing in the music. And a truth.
Don’t forget The Truth.

New music from Delbert McClinton, Sturgill Simpson, Joel and Bill Plaskett, Soul Scratchers and an amazing new EP from Joey Landreth called Whiskey.
Joey is going to be a star. No question. He’s that good. He writes, he sings and plays a stunningly sweet guitar.

Check out killer songs from The Wood Brothers, Aoife O’Donovan, Victor Wainwright, the Piana from Savanah, Barry Allen, Mike Plume, The Band, Ry Cooder and FOUR live tracks..
Little Feat (Waiting for Columbus) and The Doors (live in NYC) and Annie Lennox (The Unplugged Collection) and John Fogerty (Tribute to Dr John)

Mulligan Stew January 7th 2017- Robbie Robertson Interview

The show is a gem..
One of the best songwriters of his generation and a pivotal member of The Band..Robbie Robertson gives tdm as many stories as he can fit into an all too brief phone call.
It all starts with Robbie’s first remark “I’m only doing this because it’s you”
Terry and Robbie haven’t talked since The Last Waltz so they had some catching up to do.
Robbie takes us through growing up on the Six Nations reserve and picking up his first guitar..
Then things start to roll as a 16 year old musician playing behind Ronnie Hawkins and assembling the members who would become The Band.

The first tour with Dylan, who needed a band with nerves of steel to “go electric”…
And the gathering of “The Canadians” at The Last Waltz in SF.
Robbie ends by telling the stories behind writing and recording three of the greatest songs ever…
The Weight
The night they drove old Dixie down
Up on Cripple Creek.

It’s a full hour with Robbie Robertson and the music of The Band and Bob Dylan.
Check out the playlist below for all the music that goes with the stories.

Mulligan Stew December 24th 2016-Christmas in the Round!

In a land long ago and not that far away..I hosted a show called The Great Canadian Goldrush on CBC Radio. It was the 70’s and music seemed to matter a great deal. It helped that the music being made was varied, engaged and spoke to a large audience.
Once a year Producer The late Susan Englebert would gather our musical friends in a studio and sing Christmas songs in a circle.
Shari Ulrich, Bim (aka Roy Forbes), Valdy, Terry Frewer, Coleen Peterson and many more all were asked to write a song and tell of special Christmas memories.
The show came and went after 8 years and we all moved on.
Years later I’m hosting and producing Live From RailTown on Roundhouse Radio and in walks Shari o sing and play for our opening.
Over coffee we talk about how it would be great to re-create or re-imagine those Christmas sessions of the 70s. I thought that roundhouse radio was the perfect place to do that.
So, Christmas 2015 we gathered in the boardroom (because the studios were working and we were somewhat noisy) thankfully GM Don Shafer had wired the boardroom as a possible performance area and it worked beautifully.
Captured by session audio  engineer Julia Graff, Shari’s daughter.
The cast included Shari and Roy. Also Barney Bentall, Jim Byrnes, Craig Northey (Odds) and ShaunVerreault (Wide Mouth Mason).
Here we are another year later and keenly looking forward to doing it all again.
Craig is on the road and Shaun is watching over family.
Stepping in admirably is Bill Henderson from Chilliwack who joins Barn, Shari, Roy and Jim. It has the makings of a tradition.
Everyone tells a personal Christmas memory that they have and performs a song that strikes them true.
We also get a second song from Barney and Roy.
That second song from Mr Forbes is a Christmas rocker called mince meat tart.
He wrote it for those original shows and it survives to this day…and still rocks.
Enjoy. And happy holiday and merry Christmas
