Mulligan Stew November 19th 2016- Leonard Cohen

hello

MulliganStew Header_1
leonard-cohen
Leon Russell, Mose Allison, Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen.  All Gone.
It’s not been a good week.
I believe in the fact that music heals..if not the words, then the music or the groove.
I need all the music I can get!!!
The last 30 minutes of this show will feature two conversations about leonard Cohen by two who knew him very well
donlon
Denise Donlon
..who has just released an autobiography called Fearless as Possible interviewed Leonard many times at Much Music.
Then  when she became label boss at Sony Records Canada, she was Leonard’s  label boss.
And much the same when she ran CBC Radio.
Leonard’s death was announced The night she launched her book.  They withheld the info from Denise until they were done..then she went into the alley with her friend and had a good cry.
Denise has wonderful stories of the man.
leonard_cohen3
The second voice you’ll hear belongs to Adam Cohen, Singer/Songwriter and son of Leonard.
I’ve interviewed Adam several times over the years and when I went back to collect his thoughts on his Father I realized he had spoken a great deal about Leonard.
It’s a fascinating collection of thoughts from Son to Father.
RIP Leonard.

Mulligan Stew November 12th 2016- The Trews, Colin & John-Angus MacDonald Interview!

hello

MulliganStew Header_1

As we finished this show it was revealed to the World that Leonard Cohen had died.
I had just finished interviewing The Trews backstage at Distrikt in Victoria at the start of their Time Capsule Tour across Canada.
The MacDonald Brothers Colin and John-Angus agreed sit down with us to talk about their musical and personal lives.
That’s what their new album Time Capsule is all about..the best of what they’ve given us over the last 12 years.
It wasn’t until after I’d talked to the brothers that we heard Leonard had died.
When I got home..and into the studio – I called Denise Donlon, my former boss at MuchMusic and Sony Records.
As such she had a number of meetings and issues with Leonard who was signed to Sony. That specific interview will run NEXT week.
This show had just a short thought from Denise on Leonard’s place in Canadian/Montreal culture.
Also included is  a clip of an interview with Adam Cohen, Leonard’s  Son, talking about living in his musical shadow.
My heart is heavy with the thought of losing Leonard’s brilliance.
What a glorious human being.
Our feature album is The Musical Mojo of Dr John/Celebrating Mac and his Music.
(The Mac is Mac Rebennack..the real Dr John)
Includes tracks from
Allen Toussaint
John Fogerty
Bruce Springsteen
The playlist – is  I hope – exactly what you want to heart on a Saturday Night!!
Remember to Breathe!!!
-TDM

This week’s Stew will feature the usual choices tracks and artists you want on a Saturday night..(check out the playlist)
The feature interview will require  something we’ve never done before.
Thursday starts with  a drive to Victoria BC and a meeting with The Trews..from Nova Scotia.
Then a sit down interview with   Vocalist Colin MacDonald and his brother John-Angus MacDonald.

Finally they go on stage and I head straight for the studio to put things together and send the show off..
Playing with deadlines and limited technical skills.
We salute the career of The Trews in the last segment of Saturdays Stew.  Saturday they return to the historic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver then a week or more in Alberta.
Canadian rockers THE TREWS are set to bring their incredible thirteen year history to life with a twenty-date TIME CAPSULE tour this November in support of their upcoming album Time Capsule.
The tour represents the start of a new era for the band as Time Capsule simultaneously looks back and forward to what they have accomplished since their debut in 2003, while formally beginning a new chapter . The tour will kick off on Thursday November 10 at Distrikt in Victoria, BC and wraps on December 16 at The Marquee in their home province of Halifax, NS. Tickets on sale  via www.thetrewsmusic.com.

Mulligan Stew November 5th 2016- Colin James Interview & Donovan Woods

hello

mulliganheaderlogoc

Colin recently signed with True North and he  released his 18th album on Oct 14th titled ‘Blue Highways’
Colin has basically gone back to his roots and is covering his favorite blues tracks, some he’s been playing since he was 15/16.
After his last tour he went straight in the studio and cut 36 songs in 24 hours.
Blue Highways pays tribute to some of the singer/ guitarist’s long time blues idols including Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Freddie KingJr. Wells & Buddy Guy, Peter GreenRobert Johnson and William Bell to name a few.  In the spring of 2015 Colin wrapped up his Hearts on Fire tour.  After a couple of months of straight touring, Colin was loving playing with the band and really happy with the sound they had created on stage.  What better time to make a record?  Especially the record Colin had been itching to make for years – a collection of some of his favourite blues tracks.  In less than a week Colin and his touring band went into The Warehouse Studios in Vancouver and in just 2 days, Blue Highways was born.

Colin James – Going Down

For the majority of the record  the band is:
Geoff Hicks – Drums
Steve Pelletier – Bass
Jesse O’Brien – Hammond & Piano
Craig Northey – Guitar
On 2 songs were:
Pat Steward – Drums
Norm Fisher – Bass
Simon Kendall – Hammond & Piano
Craig Northey – Guitar
Here’s the Western Canada dates for the Blue Highways tour..
Starting March 1
03/01              Medicine Hat, AB / The Esplanade
03/02              Edmonton, AB / Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
03/03              Calgary, AB / Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

THEY ARE GOING AWAY

NOMINATED FOR TWO CANADIAN FOLK MUSIC AWARDS
On tour now  with Joey Landreth   – Tonight in Canmore, Alberta
Donovan Woods
Donovan Woods has released  They Are Going Away, the follow up EP to his Polaris Music Prize long-listed album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled. And to celebrate, Woods is revealing the new lyric video for EP track “What They Mean” via Pop Matters. Woods wrote the song with Charles Kelley (Lady Antebellum) and songwriter Abe Stoklasa.
WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEO FOR “WHAT THEY MEAN” VIA POP MATTERS

Donovan Woods’ acclaimed fourth album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled, was just recently nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards for Contemporary Album Of The Year and English Songwriter Of The Year. However, the songwriting sessions had a few tracks that didn’t make the full LP, but just couldn’t stay on the cutting room floor either. And as such, Woods is releasing those tracks They Are Going Away.

Donavan Woods, who is an exceptional acoustic guitarist in his own right, says these songs didn’t make the track listing for Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled because he didn’t want to rush the lyrics or force them to be finished. A fourth selection, “Empty Rooms” is about moving on from a relationship — when that’s not such a bad thing. Although it’s new, Woods felt it was a comfortable fit.

LISTEN TO AND SHARE “IT’LL WORK ITSELF OUT” HERE
With the release of Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled, the critics chimed in immediately. The Globe And Mail called it “a gentle, honest collection of melancholic observations and hushed tunefulness,” while NOW Magazine claimed the album was full of “wistful songs that tug at the heartstrings of anyone who’s had feelings about partners, ex-partners, where you’re from, where you shouldn’t have gone.”
After a cross-Canada tour earlier this year with Matt Andersen and festival and club appearances all over North America, Donovan Woods is preparing to head back out on the road for a run of Canadian headline dates. Joining him will be Joey Landreth from the JUNO-Award winning band The Bros. Landreth. The tour began October 13 and all dates are listed below.

Mulligan Stew Sept 24th 2016- Interview with Hayden

hello

MulliganStew Header_1

hayden-on-eilf20The musician Hayden  is bringing his #EILF20 anniversary tour to the west coast end of September / early October. If you hadn’t heard, it was  recently announced that Hayden was releasing a 2nd edition of the re-mastered Everything I Long For vinyl to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut record. Due to overwhelming demand from fans across the country, what started out as a handful of shows in Southern Ontario has become a national tour!
The album, even after 20 years, continues to affect and inspire people (including artists like The National and Feist etc). Though he has continued to release critically acclaimed album after album over the years, the debut has long held a special place in Canadian indie music and with fans. The album was even recently certified Gold in Canada via Music Canada for sales in excess of 50,000 copies, though of course its cult status has long been established.

You can read all the details for the album and tour here: http://eepurl.com/b4zkI1.   He’ll be performing the albums material, in some cases, for the first time ever in public. Canada’s indie scene has been lauded all over the world, and this album is a big part of what helped launch that reputation. His story is unlike so many others and with this special re-release, we want to bring some attention to the unique time period in Canada’s music scene and pay respect to the audiences that made this album far bigger than the songs on it. It’s a story he has been notoriously reluctant to speak about but for this brief period, he is willing to do so and perform songs from it
