hello

Ben Bryant Hosts Mission Hill Winemakers Dinner – at Deane House Calgary

THE SHOW

Ben Bryant Chief Winemaker Mission Hill

Ben Bryant, an Australian winemaker with an exceptional resumé, has joined
Mission Hill Family Estates as chief winemaker.

Joining the Mission Hill Family Estate <https://www.missionhillwinery.com/>
last summer, Ben Bryant is looking to make his mark on the Okanagan wine
scene.

Ben Bryant Sal Howell and TDM

After growing up and gaining a masterful wine knowledge in New South Wales,
Australia, Bryant refined his skills working throughout Asia before
returning home to Australia where he served as chief winemaker for Jacob
<http://www.jacobscreek.com/> ‘s Creek, St. Hugo <https://www.sthugo.com/> ,
and Wyndham Estate <https://www.georgewyndham.com/> .

On his LinkedIn profile, Ben writes: “Pernod Ricard Winemakers is the global
brand owner and distributor of premium wines from multiple countries of
origin, including Jacob’s Creek, Wyndham Estate and St Hugo (Australia),
Brancott Estate and Stoneleigh (New Zealand), Campo Viejo (Spain) and
Graffigna (Argentina).”

Ben succeeds another Australian, Darryl Brooker, now Mission Hill’s
President , who in turn succeeded John Simes who retired in 2014 after
running Mission Hill’s cellar since 1992.

“I found Ben through contacts in Australia,” Darryl says. “It took me a year
to convince him to come.” He succeeded after flying Ben and his wife to the
Okanagan. Here, Ben was swept away by the Okanagan’s beauty, the winemaking
opportunities and the passion of Mission Hill’s owner, Anthony von Mandl.

“To me, it is endless opportunity that is untapped,” Ben says in an
interview. “There is a fair element of personal challenge to come and put
the place on the map. It is about the wine. You never find a region where
you have two regions in one. You have the classic Bordeaux varieties in the
south and then you have the Burgundian varieties in the north.”

As well, the Bryant’s “have a young family and we want to expose them to
international places. They lived in Asia with us. Canada is a country that
is very similar to Australia in terms of societal values.”

The 2018 vintage in the Okanagan got him off on the right foot. “Super
impressed,” Ben says. “It was such a mild growing season that everything was
able to ripen naturally. The Cabernet Sauvignon is an example: there is no
green, there is no herbaceousness. There is a leafiness. Everything has
amazingly fresh acid structure. There is a brightness and a purity to the
fruit. It is the perfect vintage to start.”

Mission Hill has landed a chief winemaker who, through the winery and its
vineyards, will change winemaking in The Okanagan.

Mulligan Stew April 20th 2019-All Vinyl, and Joey Landreth

hello

It’s  an ALL VINYL Easter Weekend Stew with  very special guest Joey
Landreth.Talk about a star on the rise.Winnipeg’s Joey Landreth Friday launched  his second release Hindsight on
Friday.Later this year with his brother David,  The Bros Landreth release 87 their
next album.  Trust me, that is worth waiting for.Just to give you an idea how hot Joey is as an artist, when the album
launched this week he was nowhere near Winnipeg or Canada for that matter.

He’s touring in Europe after having played his way through the USA.

The same thing happened with his solo debut  Whiskey. An almost immediate
response from music fans who heard something very different in his
outstanding guitar playing, vocals that could melt your heart and songs that
stayed inside you.

“Landreth has said that there will be a new The Bros. Landreth album coming
out later in 2019. In the meantime, fans of Joey Landreth will not have to
wait long to bear witness to his stirring solo shows as he embarks again on
a full touring schedule, and he finishes off the final touches on his yet to
be titled new album.

It promises to be a wonderful opportunity to hear the next stage in the
evolution of a truly remarkable artist, one who possesses the rare ability
to connect to people through his melodies, through his lyrics, and through
his riveting performances.”

April 20th, 2019 – A Merlot Special even Miles would like!

hello

THE SHOW

Jack If they want to drink Merlot, we’re drinking Merlot.

Miles Raymond No, if anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any f#*king Merlot!

Sideways

Somewhere on this website  is the famous Merlot scene from the film  Sideways, spoken with outrage and indignation by the sublime Paul Giamatti as Miles Raymond, failed writer and wine snob.

The film came out in 2004 and the sales of Merlot dropped like a stone. In some markets it has  never really recovered.

(Director and Writer Alexander Payne starts the show)

Alexander Payne – Director of Sideways

I had this nagging question hanging over me for a while now.

Is BC Merlot being taken for granted? Has it lost its luster and ranking to the wine fan?

The most planted grape in BC is Merlot  but, except for Vancouver Sun wine writer Tony Gismondi, I’m not seeing a lot articles or headlines on BC Merlot.

In the next hour you’ll hear from many of BC’s Best Merlot winemakers. Many of the questions are the same…

Is Merlot being taken for granted?

What was the effect of Sideways?

What makes BC Merlot outstanding?

When did you fall in love with this grape?

Have we all changed our wine tastes?

Many of the questions were the same ..but the answers were  all wildly different.

Our 12   Merlot guests include:

Alexander Payne – Screenwriter and Director of Sideways https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0668247/

April 13th, 2019-The 9th annual Okanagan Falls Spring Releases

hello

The 9th annual Okanagan Falls Spring Releases  in Vancouver

(a dozen  winery interviews and lots of new releases)

 The SHOW

For 9 years the wineries of Okanagan Falls have gathered up their new Spring releases and headed for the West Coast.

This year we find them at The Terminal City Club on Hastings. A grand heritage building. Funds raised go to BC Hospitality Foundation.

The whole Group

From the northern tip of Skaha Lake to the hills above Vaseux Lake the Okanagan Falls wine region in the South Okanagan was blessed with the land that the  ice age left behind.

When  the huge glacier came through and formed the valley, it managed to created  pools and hollows. Each one today has become its own growing terroir. A combination of silt and rock. Each vineyard can have a completely different expression of wine.

Best of all, the days are hot and bright and the nights are cool. Possibly the best growing combination that nature can provide.

In 2018, the B.C. Wine Authority gave Okanagan Falls their own sub-region designation.

Oliver’s Golden Mile was the first local region to get appellation status.

Similkameen,  Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, Summerland, Naramata, Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos — are expected to be recognized within the next few years.  The process is, in a word,  glacial!

Jane Ferrari –  The voice of Yalumba (Barossa, Australia)
Jane is one of the World’s great storytellers and Yalumba is one great
story. Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery.

Jane Ferrari Yalumba

Right off the top, Jane tells the gripping story of how the family and staff
saved the winery many years ago.

The very best part of this story is that Yalumba make sensational wines –
for the world.

Canada has been a Yalumba fan for years. The other story to watch for is
when its founder Samuel Smith left Dorset England  in 1847 and found himself
in Victoria, BC.  He  fell in love with the location but felt he had to move
on to find a land for his vines.

In 2010, Wine Enthusiast named Yalumba ‘New World Winery of the Year.’

Yalumba

“The world of wine is a big family and I like it for many reasons.

“It’s hellishly competitive in a commercial sense, but the Antinoris, Dujacs,
Faiveleys, of the world and the Pol Rogers, Browns, Tyrells, Felton Roads, –
they are all inspirations.”  Robert Hill Smith – Yalumba –  Fifth Generation
Owner

Brigitte Raye  –  co/owner Orto Artisan Pasta

Brigitte Raye

If the name  Brigitte Raye doesn’t immediately connect with your memory bank please let me make an deposit.

For me it starts at La Regelade in West Vancouver.  A Wonderful French Bistro. With Brigitte front of house and Husband Alain in kitchen.

After a shut down and a divorce the parents work with their sons in various bistros.

In the latest installment, Alain takes a break. Son Kevin has been cooking at Langara Fishing Lodge in Haida Gwaii; and son Steve opens Orto Artisan Pasta in North Vancouver with mom Brigitte charming everyone who walks through the door.

Orto means garden in Italian. After all the French cooking, why Italy?  Well, partly because Brigitte married an Italian.  That helps.

It’s an old building just off Marine Drive in North Vancouver.

It used to be called Ethical Kitchen.

My old turf where I grew up.

Everything Wine is half a block away. Its well worth the search.

What a find.

Orto shares space with Vadim Mugerman’s Bad Dog Bread. A very good bakery. Exceptional really.  Bad Dog Bread  offers breakfast until 11am.  Next door, the former Ethical Kitchen operator makes kombucha.

You can get the bread and Kombucha all while dining at Orto as well.

The pasta is everything you could want.

There’s a very popular share dish of Burrata & Prosciutto with Bad Dog Bread. Fresh and delish!

What a great room.

As Brigitte explains, all the plates are from thrift stores… only adds to the cool.

Looking for a great personal space to just hang and love the food.,  here it is.

Orto Artisan Pasta

1600 MacKay  North Vancouver.

http://ortoartisanpasta.com/

and we finish Tasting Room Radio featuring  a chat with Pedro Parra.

Find his wines. They are sensational!
