5. The High Bar Gang Lost and Undone (True North Records)
Available on: iTunes
Unlike any other record released this year. The title says it all – these are lost songs given new life. A fine mix of Gospel and Country/folk/bluegrass, it’s old songs made new with layers of real voices and very real instruments, all watched over by the ears of Ry Cooder.
See them live. Delightful.

4. Blue Rodeo In our Nature (Warner Music)

Because they’ve been making great music for two generations of Canadians, the question is ‘Do we take them for granted’? I think we do. This really is Greg Keelor’s LP, not that Jim Cuddy disappears but Greg had a lot to say and sing. It’s fair to say that Blue Rodeo are the sound of Canada. High Country Harmonies.

3. Serena Ryder Harmony (Capitol/Universal)

Yes the LP was released late 2012 but it spent its sensational life being discovered all during 2013. Gold and Platinum status awarded in 2013. A whole new voice for Serena.

2. Lee Harvey Osmond The Folk Sinner (Latent Recordings)

The pride of Hamilton, Ontario – the ever shifting, ever changing Tom Wilson, of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. This is his side project – something to keep him off the streets and out of the gangs. Some side project!!

Available on: iTunes
Will show up on everybody’s best of list this year. A Grammy for Album of the Year, a sensational club concert after SNL, a 20-minute film Here Comes The Night and so much more. But that’s all filigree. This is all about the music. Each and every song is complete and connected to the next. A true LP, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the Beatles. And they’re Canadian eh!!

THE SHOW

For centuries Dogliani has been a name synonymous with the distinctive wines of Piedmont. Both as a picturesque town that has long been famous for wines produced from Dolcetto – Dolcetto di Dogliani – and today as the family surname of one of Piedmont’s most famous producers of Barolo. Fiorenzo Dogliani, CEO of the Dogliani family’s Beni di Batasiolo winery, runs the family enterprise, Batasiolo SPA. In addition to the winery, Batasiolo SPA has embraced a wine-country destination lifestyle with its newly built, 38-room luxury hotel and spa, Il Boscareto which was opened in Serralunga d’Alba in 2009.

Il Boscareto Hotel and SpaThe Dogliani family’s winegrowing history spans four generations in Italy’s Piedmont region and traces its origin to just seven and a half acres of Nebbiolo vines in Barolo. With the launch of Beni di Batasiolo in 1978, the company’s vineyard holdings now total 345 acres from nine vineyard sites and four growing regions: Barolo, La Morra, Monforte D’Alba, and Serralunga D’Alba.

Fiorenzo Dogliani

As CEO, Fiorenzo directs the company from the Beni di Batasiolo winery located in La Morra Cuneo. In the late 1950s, Fiorenzo is credited with reaching beyond the borders of Piedmont to market the family’s wines to restaurateurs in nearby Milan. It was this bold first move that established a presence for the company’s wines on the domestic market and foreshadowed Fiorenzo’s future role as an evangelist for the Piedmont region on the world market. Fiorenzo was among the first Piedmontese winegrowers to travel extensively to promote his wines Fiorenzo’s early efforts helped raise visibility for the company’s long-lived Barolo and Barbaresco wines and establish a reputation for quality, one that is rigorously pursued at Batasiolo. By 1979 he was traveling to New York and Toronto introducing the trade and consumers alike to the joys of Nebbiolo, an effort that helped speed the evolution of American palates at the time towards the appreciation of dry, sophisticated wines.

The Truffle Master The famous ‘Tartufo d’Alba‘ is a marvelous gift of nature and a symbol of the rich cuisine of Piemonte. The truffle was known in antiquity, not just for its inherent culinary qualities but also as an aphrodisiac! Scientists discovered that truffles contain volatile alcohol with a strong musk flavor, a chemical brother of testosterone. No doubt this is something the ancients knew all along. The secret to enjoying the truffle is to avoid using it with other strong flavors. It is perhaps best served as an antipasti, buttered on wholemeal toast or over pasta as shards with butter and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. In a country where food equates with love as one of life’s great pleasures, ‘tartufi’ are literally worth their weight in gold. The delicate white truffle variety, only served raw, grows in Northern Italy and Umbria. Piedmonte is the heart of white truffle country, where the famous Alba festival provides a magnificent backdrop of Romanesque ruins, Gothic spires, and Baroque bell towers every October. Chef David Hawksworth was honoured to welcome Suzanne Goin to his Vancouver restaurant Hawksworth before Christmas. Suzanne cooked a meal using recipes from The A.O.C Cookbook, which is Chef Goin’s new book inspired by her L.A. small-plates restaurant of the same name.

AOC Cookbook

Suzanne Goin was born in Los Angeles to food-obsessed Francophile parents. A graduate of Brown University, Goin’s background includes positions at some of the most acclaimed restaurants in the United States, including Ma Maison, L’Orangerie in Los Angeles, Al Forno in Providence, Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and Arpege in Paris. Her work as executive chef at Campanile put her on the culinary map in Los Angeles and laid the groundwork for her first restaurant.In 1998, Goin opened, Lucques in West Hollywood with her business partner Caroline Styne. The restaurant met with instant success and Suzanne was named one of Food and Wine magazine’s “Best New Chefs” in 1999. A second restaurant, A.O.C., a groundbreaking concept of inspired wines by the glass and small plates menu, opened in 2002 and met with enthusiasm from the public and press.Goin collaborated on the menu of The Hungry Cat, the casual seafood restaurant opened by her husband, Chef David Lentz, in 2005, and now with three locations.In 2006, Suzanne was the recipient of two awards from the prestigious James Beard Foundation. The first, for her cookbook, Sunday Suppers at Lucques, received the James Beard Foundation award for Best Cookbook from a Professional Viewpoint in 2006. Suzanne’s culinary achievements were recognized with the award for Best Chef California.She has received five concurrent nominations for Outstanding Chef of the Year by the James Beard Foundation from 2008 – 2011. . In April 2011, Goin & Styne were honored to prepare a dinner for President Obama, whose fundraising team selected Suzanne and Tavern for this momentous event.In 2009, Suzanne and her business partner Caroline Styne opened Tavern in the Brentwood area of the westside of Los Angeles. Suzanne Goin AOC 2013 has been a busy year for Goin and Styne, with stunning growth. A.O.C., which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, moved to a new location in February 2013 with an added cocktail program and new menu. Her AOC Cookcook is one of the very best of a busy year. and finally – One of the very best vegetarian chefs in the World Denis Cotter at Hastings House Salt Spring Island.

Denis Cotter

Born in Macroom, Co. Cork, Denis worked in banking for eight years before leaving to follow an ambition to work with food. Already a vegetarian, he trained as a cook in the famous Cranks restaurants in London.
Back in Ireland, after a spell in a wholefood restaurant, Denis’ frustration with the limitations of the vegetarian industry sparked the opening of Cafe Paradiso in 1993, to create an environment where he could evolve a personal style of cooking focussed on the pleasure of food rather than the perceived negativity of vegetarianism.
Among the many awards bestowed on Cafe Paradiso, Denis Cotter was voted ‘Chef of the Year ’ by Food & Wine (Ireland) magazine in 2005.
Denis Cotter is also the author of four books. Atrium, an imprint of the Cork University Press, published his first book, ‘The Café Paradiso Cookbook’ in June 1999; and his second, ‘Paradiso Seasons’ in June 2003. The first book was shortlisted for the British Guild of Food Writers Awards. ‘Paradiso Seasons’ won ‘Best Vegetarian Cookbook in the World’ at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Barcelona in 2004, and was shortlisted for the James Beard Awards in New York in 2005.
November 2007 saw the release of Denis’ third book, titled ‘wild garlic, gooseberries & me’ and published by Harper Collins. Giving equal rein to his writing talent and ability to create inspirational recipes, ‘wild garlic…’ was shortlisted for the Andre Simon Awards in 2008.
His latest book, ‘for the love of food’, published by Harper Collins in April 2011, is easily Denis’ most accessible collection of recipes, focussing on home cooking with delicious flavour combinations.

I met Stephen Cipes and 3 of his four sons Gabe, Ezra and Ari as they passed through Vancouver. They had much to talk about.. Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s Cipes Rose received a gold medal and was named as a top world wine at the Effervescents du Monde, judged in France Nov. 13 to 15. It was the only North American sparkling wine to place in the international competition. Golden Mile Cellars was acquired by the Luckhurst Family in the fall of 2003. Along with a great team and winemakers Michael Bartier and now JM Bouchard, they have created a go-to destination and very popular wines. Just like the Cipes, Mick and Pam are now working alongside their son Joe! Also.. in a business that likes to talk without actually saying anything..the Luckhursts give straight up answers..with NO BS. Gotta love that.

Matthew Sekeres began a new chapter in his broadcast career as co-host of the all new Sekeres & Price Midday Show on TEAM 1040. Formerly the The Globe and Mail’s national sports correspondent in Vancouver.

Matt was born in Montreal and raised primarily in Ottawa, Matt has worked for three dailies and for TSN, covering Stanley Cup playoffs, Super Bowls, Olympic Games, Grey Cups and NBA Finals. He moved to Kitsilano, Canada’s best neighbourhood, in 2007, and enjoys travelling, music, entertaining and scuba diving in his spare time. He admits to knowing almost nothing about wine..but is very comfortable around beer and great food.
His comments to me about the day he was on air when the Boston Marathon bombings took place are revealing and heartfelt.
He’s OK with drinking Pink.
He’s OK with being labeled as a “swashbuckler” by his broadcast partner Blake Price.
He OK with his Mother implying he can sometimes be a “loudmouth”. His Mom understood when Matt explains he gets PAID to be a loudmouth.

They have a beautiful six-acre vineyard, featuring of some of BC’s oldest Vinifera plantings, a winery and tasting room. They are a small winery known for crafting big wines. The winery is the spiritual home of the Siren’s Call wine project and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Theyre striving to produce some of the most unique hand-crated wines in the Okanagan including Siren’s Call, Hawk’s Hollow, Noble Beast, and Phasion Estates. The team is lead by winemaker Mark Simpson. Mark’s background includes creating and making beer for Molson and Granville island Brewing.
