THE SHOW

Wine-Diva

Wine-Diva

Daenna van Mulligen/The Wine Diva has been on the road from most of May and June.

Two of the wine regions she visited were Spain and Chablis.

Daenna headed for the South of Spain and an association of wineries called The Grandes Pagos de Espana.

Its goal, to preserve the rich culture of estate-made wine in Spain and in many instances, unique Spanish grape varieties.

This group has dedicated itself to discovering and replanting many of the old original vineyards of Spain.  These vines are dry farmed..no water..which will serve them well given the changing environment.. Daenna came back very excited about the possibilities of this group..their biggest hurdle is to let the World their story.

Grandes Pagos

Grandes Pagos

One story  that stood out for Daenna was Valdespino.

“The origins of the Bodega Valdespino date back to 1264 A.D. The first member of the Valdespino family to cultivate and age Sherry wines was Don Alfonso Valdespino, one of 24 Christian Knights who fought for King Alonso to re-conquer the City of Jerez from the Moors.

As a reward for a successful battle, the King rewarded the Knights, by giving them land in the City of Jerez.

Valdespino also produces Fino Inocente, the only Sherry wine whose grapes are harvested from only one vineyard, the Macharnudo Estate. It is also unique in that it is the only Sherry wine fermented in oak barrels, being now the norm to ferment in stainless steel tanks.

Chablis vineyards

Chablis vineyards

And then to France and Chablis.  Chablis the region –part of Burgundy – and a star in its own right.

It’s their version of chardonnay..whether its Petite Chablis, premier cru etc.

Daenna is working on an  in-depth look into Chablis – the wines, vineyards, soils, expositions and, of course, foods.

Xavier Penas – Gran Clos (Priorat)

Priorat is a small but dynamic region in the North East of Spain.

Priorat is famed for its startling views, pure air and azure skies. It has an ancient history stretching back to the Phonecians.
Vines, like people, often reach their peak in the face of adversity. This highly limited cuvée is hand made from 100-year-old vines that suffer daily to survive in dense slate soils on steep hillsides. Their fruit offers a unique mineral complexity that could come from no other place on earth and has done so since Carthusian monks first planted vines in Priorat in the 12th century (Priorat is the Catalan word for ‘priory’).

Xavier Penas  is the General Manager of this esteemed winery.

Currently we can only buy Finca el Puig..great blend.

BUT soon we’ll finally get to try the big two

Gran Clos and the mighty CARTUS.

How could anyone forget that?

I know some guys have a problem being seen with “The pink” but truly that’s their problem.

It’s great year round..but right now it’s the answer to a lot of questions.

Such as “What shall I bring?”

Chris Benziger/ Benziger Wines  Sonoma

 Chris Benziger

Chris Benziger

Benziger Family Winery, founded more than 30 years ago by a pioneering Sonoma Valley wine family who helped bring green farming practices into the mainstream, is being sold to one of the world’s largest producers of low-priced wines.

The Wine Group, the world’s third-largest wine company with such budget brands as Franzia, Almaden and Corbett Canyon, announced Monday it has purchased the winery in Glen Ellen and its nearby sister winery, Imagery.

Financial terms were not disclosed, though industry estimates ranged from less than $90 million to slightly more than $100 million.

It is the second blockbuster deal in two decades for the Benziger family, which built its first wine brand, Glen Ellen, into the largest wine label in Sonoma County before selling it in 1993 to Heublein for an estimated $80 million.

Mike Benziger, founder and chief executive officer of his family winery, said The Wine Group will continue the green farming tradition that has been the calling card of the winery he founded with his late father in 1980.

Here’s an on site interview with Mike’s brother Chris, who is responsible for the farming of this iconic property.

Great guy..He’ll be VP of trade relations.

PS… the entire family moved to Sonoma from that great wine region-  NEW JERSEY –  many years ago.

Mulligan Stew June 6th 2015-Rare Tom Petty, The River and the Road Interview & More…

hello

river-and-the-road
For the first that I can remember, I’ve invited an artist to guest on the show two weeks in a row.
Must be some artist..right?
river_roadThe Band is The River and the Road..and they are mighty good.
Their album is called Headlights..
I found John Hayes, bassist for the band and forced him to talk to me and answer searing questions!!
Such as ..
did you all busk together at the beginning?
You’re from the Salmon Capitol of the World – Campbell River?
Differences between Alberta audiences and The Coast?
Does he think they sound like Neil Young and Crazy Horse on Mistakes?
The experience of flying to Australia and spending considerable time playing there.
unnamed (1)unnamed

The other very special musical treat is a very rare piece of Vinyl from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
is a one sided Live Album from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It was meant as a radio Promo release and was issued by Leon Russell’s  Shelter Records in 1977.
It was recorded at Paul’s Mall in Boston when they opened for Al Kooper Dec 12 1976. I was told once there were only 500 copies made. I’ve never heard it being played on anyone’s show before.
This is raw rock from a band about to step into history.
We’re going to play all four tracks..
Jaguar and the Thunderbird Ford –  a Chuck Berry cracker.
Fooled Again – from their first self titled LP..  for most in the audience..its a new song because its only a month old. All Kooper joins them on stage.
Luna – also from first LP
Dog on the Run – over 9 minutes..classic Petty Riffs. Would show up later – rearranged and much shorter – on 1985’s Southern Accents.
Also one really fine found single..its a demo
From Jim Foster – called Radio ON.
Its starts Hour two..
I may keep playing it until it’s the summer hit of 2o15

About the River and The Road…

The River and The Road is a band built on risking new beginnings and telling their stories along the way.
After crossing an ocean, leaving a hemisphere, and a long stint hitch hiking across the American Southwest, singer/guitarist Andrew Phelan made his way to Chicago with the looming need to cross into Canada for work. He had two flight choices—Montreal or Vancouver—and flying west was cheaper. Once there, he found a healthy contest in singer/banjo player Keenan Lawlor, who had been playing around Vancouver for the previous eight months. Keenan had moved across water to forge a new path, but in his case, it was the Georgia Strait instead of the Pacific Ocean. In the beginning the two butted heads, seeing in each other the greatest competition for the attention of an East Vancouver open mic audience. Competition turned to collaboration, busking, and living on scraps together to make their musical existence possible. After several months as a duo, and experimentation with additional instrumentation, they recorded their debut eponymous twelve-track album. In the spring of 2012, the band emerged as a dynamic four-piece with the addition of drummer Cole George and bassist John Hayes.
In their short history as a band, The River and The Road has grown from a busking duo to an internationally touring quartet. Winter 2013 saw the boys working to stitch their name into the musical fabric of Australia, most notably in Sydney and Melbourne. The band has toured extensively across Canada, completing two coast-to-coast tours among many other regional tours. They are currently filling their summer calendar with festival dates and preparing for their third cross-Canada tour this spring in support of their second full length album, to be released Spring 2015 through MapleMusic Recordings.
Tenacity, heart, and above all else, a gripping live performance, the band has no plans of slowing down. Sincere storytelling mixed with strong harmonies, heavy percussion breakdowns and dynamic arrangements, embodies the sound of The River and The Road.

Alamos is one of Argentina’s wines to watch.

Alamos Winemaker Felipe Stahlschmidt finds inspiration for his wines by climbing the snow-covered peaks of the Andes Mountains and gazing at the majestic vineyards that have made Argentina famous in the world of wine.

Philipe Stahlschmidt

Philipe Stahlschmidt

“The mountains here create the terruño, or terroir, in our vineyards,” Felipe says. “They keep the storms out of our valleys. They bring us pure water from snowmelt. They make the winds that cool the vineyards. They are an essential part of the nature of this place.”

Felipe believes that great wine represents the terruño of the vineyard. For him, Alamos wines, exuberant and full of character, are a beautiful expression of what nature and humans can create when they work in harmony. Felipe also works to create quality wines that are affordable and pair well with food, handcrafting each Alamos varietal using techniques typically reserved for wines at a much higher price point. The result is a flavorful collection of quality wines at an extraordinary value.

After graduating from the prestigious Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza with a winemaking degree in 2003, Felipe joined Alamos as an assistant winemaker in 2006. Today, he oversees winemaking for all Alamos wines.

Tatiana Nessier was born in Northern Argentina’s remote and breathtaking Salta region, well known for its concentrated wines and rugged landscape. After attending an American high school in Venezuela, Tatiana returned to Argentina to attend Congreso University in Mendoza, where she studied international relations. It was partway through these studies when her passion for wine took root.

Tatiana Nessier

Tatiana Nessier

“At Alamos, we get to meet and talk with some of the best winemakers and viticulturists in Argentina—so it’s very exciting,” Tatiana completed her sommelier studies in 2013 and received the title of international sommelier, endorsed by the prestigious CETT (Tourism and Hospitality University, Barcelona, Spain). “I really appreciate the philosophy of Alamos wines,” she says. “They are easy to drink, offer vibrant fruit and honor the typicity of grape variety and place.”

http://www.alamoswines.com/

Alois Clemens Lageder – Born in 1987, Alois Clemens Lageder is part of the sixth generation to be involved in the family vineyard Alois Lageder in Alto Adige, Italy.  Lageder’s wine education included travel to Germany, the USA, and France, where he also worked for well-known wineries such as Burgundy’s Domaine Marquis d’Angerville. He holds an executive Master for Family Entrepreneurship from the Zeppelin University in Germany.

Alois Lageder Winery – Alois Lageder is a synonym for the highest standard of quality in viticulture and winemaking, for a sustainable, holistic corporate philosophy, and for a wide spectrum of cultural and artistic activities.  Founded in 1823, and now under the sixth generation of family ownership, the winery is committed to promoting biodynamic agriculture and embraces innovative ideas, as indicated by its newly constructed gravity-fed winemaking complex.

Alto Adige – Located between Alpine and Mediterranean climates, with winegrowing elevations that range from 200 to 1,000 meters (600 to 3,300 feet) above sea level, Italy’s Alto Adige region offers just 5,300 hectares (13,100 acres) of vineyard area but around twenty grape varieties.  It is one of Italy’s smallest winegrowing regions, but produces a disproportionate number of premium, world-class wines.

… and finally Blue Grouse in the Cowichan Valley/Vancouver Island is opening a new facility which includes a beautiful tasting room.

Blue Grouse

Blue Grouse

Nestled in the heart of Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley, Blue Grouse is one of Vancouver Island’s first wineries, working with vines originally planted in 1977.  The winery will also be releasing ‘Paula’, a brand new sparkling wine cuvée, named in honour of the owner’s daughter. Mulligan Stew May 23rd 2015

hello

Ian Mcleod
The May 23rd  version of Mulligan Stew is a birthday gift from our donor and his family to Ian MacLeod of Edmonton.
Last Saturday Ian turned 70 and his children wanted to dedicate the hour as a thank you for being such a great Dad.
Unfortunately, emails went missing and one didn’t get sent..that one was the most important.
So….this show is a make good..a re-do..a call to arms.
Ian’s daughter Chelsea sent this note..that turned the tide.
Check out the playlist..It’s Ian’s kind of show
Hey TDM, and thank you for doing such a fantastic show every week on CKUA!
“My name is Chelsea MacLeod.  My lovely younger brother, Andrew, passed this email on to me with the message – “I did it last time.  Your turn!”  Ha. Ha.  Anyway, I am thrilled to be in touch with you.  I have long admired your work and your keen and open ear for music of all kinds.
Andrew was in contact with you about supporting an hour of The Stew in honour of my father, Ian MacLeod.
We (my brothers Jon and Andy and my sister Marhea) have done this a couple times before to celebrate my Dad’s birthday.  No other gift seems to top it, so it seemed very fitting to re-vist this again for my Dad’s 70th.
Age is a funny thing and it can seem so arbitrary sometimes – like when discussing music – my father is 70 but he will listen to anything.  You think he might be happy to stay in his comfort zone of the Stones and the Beatles and all those great bands of his era – I mean who wouldn’t be – he grew up with so much great music.  However, as much as he loves those bands still to this day, he is always open to hearing everything and anything new, in fact, he goes out of his way to stay current.  I love this about him.
Every year for Christmas he makes a mix CD for friends and family.  If you heard this year’s CD, you would think he was a teenager!   Again, his eternally youthful relationship with music is totally inspired.
My Dad played for the Edmonton Eskimos for 4 years in the late 60’s.  During that time, he was exposed to R&B from many of his team-mates who came up to Canada from the States to play Canadian football.  I love to hear his stories about the first time he heard the Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, James Brown, Stevie Wonder etc. and how the R&B sounds blew him away.  That music changed his life.
His father, Donald MacLeod, also had a beautiful relationship with music.  My Dad grew up with the sounds of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald and lots of other jazz music my grandfather played on their cabinet stereo record player.  Similarly, I remember every time my Dad brought home a new Michael Jackson record, or Prince, or Whitney Houston, or Al Green, Ray Charles – that music indeed changed my life.
I guess it only makes sense that his four children also have an intense love of music.  On Saturday, during your show, we will all be there to listen and most likely, we will clear away the furniture for a dance floor.  🙂
If I could pick a theme for the night – I would ask for anything with deep soul groove – funk, R&B, blues etc.
Having said that, we trust you implicitly to put together a great hour of music.  Like I said, he LOVES your show.
I am welling up with tears as I finish up this email to you.  Nobody is more deserving of two musical celebrations than my Dad.  It’s hard for me to say with words what an impact this man has had on all of his children’s lives.  He is the most supportive, loving, and caring parent anyone could ask
for.
Thank you for your time and for your commitment to CKUA.  They are really lucky to have you.
Thanks again, TDM!  We are so excited for Saturday night
Take care,
Chelsea MacLeod”

9th Annual Spot Prawn Festival/Vancouver

It’s one of the best success stories anywhere.

9 years ago Chef Robert Clark was mad as hell and wasn’t going to take it anymore.

All he wanted to do was serve local Spot Prawns at C Restaurant.

None of the fishing fleet would sell him their prawns. That’s because they could get top dollar in Japan.

Robert got together with Steve Johansson and his vessel Organic Ocean and off they went..

Word got around very quickly that fresh prawns could be bought – live – off the False Creek Docks across from Granville market.

Everything took off from that moment.

Now..1000’s of people make their way there to kick off the season, which is very short. 4-6 weeks and it’s over.

Here’s who we talked to at the kick off last weekend:

 Robert Belcham – Campagnolo

Ryan Bissell – Chair of Festival

Scott Yeager – Pear Tree

Jonathan Chovancek – Café Medina

Ken Liang – Ken’s Chinese Restaurant

Scott Kwan – Kaya Malay Bistro

Mattie Christie – Go Fish

Tara O’Brady Seven Spoons

Seven Spoons is  more than 100 favorite recipes and stories taken  from Canadian blogger Tara O’Brady ..strangely called Seven Spoons.

Seven Spoons reads like a wonderful  notebook . I loved it

recipe 5 spice steak at bottom of page.

“Seven Spoons is so gorgeous and beautifully photographed that I just want to jump right into the pages. I can’t wait to savor these amazing dishes, all with a global bent, starting with breakfast biscuits and spicy, fried Mexican Huevos a la Plaza de Mercado; then moving on to soups and salads with flavors culled from the Middle East and East Asia; then ending with lush, compelling desserts.”
