hello

Diva and Angus An (Maenam)

And DJ Kearney on New District and Fall Wines.

The Show

Blind Tasting Rhone Wines at Maenam

Laure Vaissermann/Michelle Bouffard/Daenna van Mulligen/Angus An

It’s a full-on Rhone wine tasting at  Angus An’s  Maenam Restaurant in
Vancouver.   Invited were taste makers, wine writers, wine buyers and
sommeliers.  We were made to blind taste reds and whites and try to name the
grape(s) and what region they came from.. It was a humbling experience.  Our
hosts are Laure Vaissermann, spokesperson for Rhone Valley Wines  and  by
Michelle Bouffard,  WSET instructor, journalist and President of CAPS
(Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers – BC Chapter).

“Just imagine, 250 km from north to south, 250 communes (local authority
areas, often villages)… The vineyards of the Rhone Valley are a world
apart, a shifting landscape which winds and unwinds around a fluid axis: the
Rhone, king of rivers, carrying silt and a sense of history. The Rhone is
the linking factor, holding together these contrasting landscapes. From
Vienne to Nîmes and Avignon, and on to the borders of the Luberon, on both
banks of the river, there is a wealth of places to explore”. Christophe
Tassan, “Flânerie dans le Vignoble de la Vallée du Rhône”.

Wine has been produced in the Rhône Valley for over 500 years, with some of
its steeply-terraced vineyards amongst the oldest in France. Syrah rules
over the south with a mix of Mediterranean grapes, while in the north the
two stars are Hermitage – grown on a granite hillside above the town of Tain
and best put to the back of the cellar for a decade – and Côte-Rôtie, a star
appellation made famous by Guigal’s single-vineyard wines.

Rhone Valley Wines

The Reds: Fruity, round, gourmet or spicy, full-bodied and structured. They
pair with a wide variety of dishes, from pasta to stews;

The Whites: Floral and fruity or full-bodied and deep, these wines pair with
a myriad of options, from appetizers to desserts;

The Rosés: Fresh and tender or spicy and flavourful, no one can resist their
charms, especially during summer

Rhone Valley Wines are versatile to pair with Vancouver’s diverse food
scene.

Joining in this Love affair with Rhone wines are Daenna van Mulligen, The
Wine Diva, who’s gives us all the back ground we need to appreciate what
these wines represent and where they came from.

And award winning  Maenam Executive chef Angus An. Angus talks about how
exciting it was to pair Rhone wines with Vancouver’s take on Asian food.
Wines assumed to  pair with  meats and stews etc.. are now sharing the
senses with great Thai spices.

DJ Kearney –  Director of Wine  New District  and Fall Wines

dj-kearney-new-district

dj-kearney-new-district

A two part conversation with one of Canada’s best wine experts/educators.

The first segment is all about DJ’s new position at New District.  She’s
Director of wine.  Who better to follow?  What a leader.

Not only does she know her wines..she knows who’s growing the best
grapes..who’s crushing and blending and leading the next releases.

DJ is a huge supporter of BC wines and that’s where we start.

Here’s a comment from New District..

“We are here to simplify the enjoyment of wine, and to give you one-stop
access to great BC wine. These are truly exciting times: our wine industry
is booming, with more new wineries in more parts of the province than ever
before. There are over 270 wineries now, making almost 3,000 different wines
using 75 different grapes. But while there are lots of great wines made
here, it is not always easy for producers to get their bottles on store
shelves. Which means that BC wine lovers actually have limited choice when
shopping for wine.

We are here to connect artisan producers who deserve to be better known with
discerning consumers who deserve to drink their wines. We want to make it
easy to discover and enjoy the best of BC wine. New District will offer an
ever-changing assortment of mixed cases assembled by our renowned wine sage
DJ Kearney, making it easy to sample new wines from month to month. She will
literally do the shopping for you – all you need to do is pick a
pre-assembled pack that you like, in a size that you want. And our
convenient concierge-style delivery takes the stress out of getting to the
wine store. We’ll bring your wine to you – where and when you want it. And
all want to look knowledgeable, so we have that covered too, with up-to-date
BC wine content, plus a wealth of other useful wine intelligence.

Great local wines, useful content, and convenient delivery. Please join us
in our celebration of the new era of BC wine.”  https://newdistrict.ca/

The second segment with DJ Kearney is about Fall Wines..

I asked her to tell us about a handful of BC wines that she would  like to
recommend to the Tasting Room audience.

Mulligan Stew Sept 17th 2016- Guests Stephen Fearing & Royal Wood

hello

MulliganStew Header_1

TWO special guests in the first hour of this week’s Stew..
fearing
Stephen Fearing is one busy guy.kings and kings
He’s currently in the Maritimes touring with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings..who are about to release  their much awaited Kings and Kings.
However Stephen has his own agenda.
Yes he has a new album coming early in the New year but he’s about to release on Monday his  first single called Blowhard Nation.
screen-shot-2016-09-17-at-11-25-27-am
It’s a protest song about the current political race in the USA but really focuses on Donald Trump.
Neither of us have seen a lot of artist push back from his fear mongering but Stephen is more than ready to have a go.
He says he’ll get a lot of social messages..we’ll keep an eye on that.
Mulligan Stew is honoured to be the first  show anywhere to play the song …

“I love the word blowhard – I imagine a man with a red face and neck rolling over the knot of his conservative tie. The last thing I saw before heading into the bush to write this batch of songs was the cover of a magazine featuring Donald Trump in full sneer. At that point it seemed inconceivable that such a loud-mouthed bully / con-artist could become the Republican nominee,” Fearing explains.
By releasing the song early, Fearing hopes to contribute to the conversation about the potentially catastrophic global impact of a Trump presidency and use the song to try and help some of the people Trump is vilifying in his campaign. With this in mind, Fearing is donating his proceeds from the single to War Child, a charity which helps children in waraffected areas through education, opportunity, and justice.
Blowhard Nation is the first single from Every Soul’s a Sailor (album available January 14, 2017). Over the course of his celebrated career Stephen Fearing has collaborated with artists such as Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Wilson, Colin Linden, and Margo Timmins. When not working behind the microphone, Fearing spends his time teaching songwriting and producing, working on projects like Suzie Vinnick’s JUNO-nominated album Happy Here.

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner B

Last comments on the VanWineFest from Master wine expert Tony Aspler, Pascal Madevon at Culmina, Will Flatt pours Cannonball,  Christine Coletta at Okanagan Crush Pad , The Stag’s Hollow story and the guys behind the hugely successful Railtown Café.

THE SHOW

Wine fest Follow Up

After spending two jammed packed hours interviewing winemakers and principals  at the 38th Vancouver International Wine festival I took the opportunity to return the next day with my trusty hand held microphone and sought our people I’d missed..

In a very active and invigorating room I had a chance to slow down and talk to:

My buddy Will Flatt. He’s moved around quite a bit but every time he shows up he’s always pouring the  most interesting wines.

He’s currently representing Dream Wines.  The home of Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Peter Michael, Colgin Cellars etc.

Wicked Willie Flatt

Wicked Willie Flatt

This time he’s pouring Cannonball and from that label a sensational blended rose called Angels and Cowboys. Sonoma fruit..some Estate growing.

The  Cannonball Chardonnay – 70% Russian River. It’s a 50/50  Stainless Steele and new Oak.  Lovely..delicious wine.

Willy takes us through the reds as well.. Great start to the show.

Tony Aspler – Master wine expert

Tony Aspler

Tony Aspler

We finally found Tony Aspler with a spare 5 minutes. He was surrounded by people who wanted his opinion on the 100’s of wines in the room.

They had to wait for a second because I only get to see Tony once every TEN YEARS.

Tony Aspler has been writing about wine for over 35 years.

He was the wine columnist for The Toronto Star for 21 years and has authored 15 books on wine and food, including The Wine Atlas of CanadaVintage CanadaThe Wine Lover’s CompanionThe Wine Lover CooksTravels With My Corkscrew, and Tony Aspler’s Cellar Book. Tony’s latest book is The Five Minute Wine Book.

In December 2007, Tony was awarded the Order of Canada.

In 2012 Tony was the first Canadian to be inducted into the New York Media Wine Writers Hall of Fame. In that year Tony was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.

Wine royalty my friends.

Christine Coletta – Haywire

Christine Colletta

Christine Colletta

I found Christine Coletta from Okanagan Crush pad surrounded by her peers as she was talking to a well-placed politician and there was a serious back and forth going on.

So, I started a conversation with Julian Scholefield about the wines he was pouring from Haywire and OCP, then just barged into Christine’s posse and fired off some questions about um- wine!

And a pinot planting above the winery that could be a World Class site.

We talked wine laws and heading to New York for a “natural” wine symposium.( She was invited by the organizers after they tasted  her “natural” wines.)

She’s there right Now.

Pascal Madevon – Winemaker at Culmina

Pascal Madevon - Culmina

Pascal Madevon – Culmina

Turn the audio up a bit because Pascal’s French accent seems to get thicker when he talks about his vineyards.

That’s because he gets excited and speedy.

We all got to appreciate his winemaking skills as the winemaker and blender at Osoyoos Larose.

Now he’s working with Donald Triggs at Culmina.  What a pair. With so many winemaking skills between them it’s no wonder the wines are so good.

Stag’s Hollow/OK Falls  Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger

Established in 1995, Stag’s Hollow is a family-owned winery in Okanagan Falls. Stag’s Hollow includes two vineyards…the Estate Vineyard and Shuttleworth Creek Vineyard….that are within 2 kms of each other.

The team at Stag’s Hollow has researched and sought out grapes, both new and old, suited to the area soils and microclimate. Hands-on owners, Larry Gerelus & Linda Pruegger, along with Winemaker, Dwight Sick, believe their passion and involvement in every aspect of the vineyard and winemaking process has created wines that express the terroir of Stag’s Hollow Vineyard and their Grower Partner.

Besides talking about all of their wines..we touch on Okanagan Falls and their plan to get the wine fans attention.

Many just drive through this region on their way “someplace else”.

Trust me..there’s more than Ice Cream in OK Falls.

Railtown Café and Catering / Dan Olson and Tyler Day

Railtown-Cafe

Railtown-Cafe

This is yet another edition of “walking the neighbourhood”

The broadcasting home of Tasting Room Radio is Roundhouse Radio at 714 Alexander St..5 blocks East of Gastown in Vancouver.

There are a growing number of great new restaurants taking over what had been decaying or empty spaces in the East End.

Not anymore.

The Mackenzie Room Just ask Luigi, Belgard Kitchen and the truly successful Railtown Café and Catering.

The true sign of success in the hospitality business is when people will wait for their food. The regulars brings books, laptops, newspapers etc..

You don’t ever wait long and the reward is just the best food..

Dan Olson  and Tyler Day are chefs and cop-partners.

Dan explains that when he was cooking in LA..he was watching people try to change the salads etc on the menu to fit their needs..

They decided to make the Railtown menu just like that..put all the ingredients in front of the customer and let them make up their menu.

The finishing touch is,  the culinary talents on display are  top notch. Like, really really good. With passion and focus!

Most of the food is taken out..people with busy lives..eating at their desks..but man it’s fun to just sit there and watch the human flow.

The buzz in the room is catchy..Feeling less than stellar?

Spend 20 minutes inside Railtown café..with a salad or killer pulled pork sandwich and the rest of your day will be a breeze.

Can you imagine how good the catering is?

And that is why the boys will announce on this show when and where the next TWO locations will open in Vancouver.

They are that popular.  Enjoy!!!

Sept 10th 2016 – Fanny Bay Oysters and Unsworth Wines

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner B

This week we’re talking Fanny Bay – The Oysters and the Oyster Bar

And a feature on Unsworth Wines in the Cowichan Valley.

THE SHOW

Even though both Fanny Bay Oysters and Unsworth Wines are Vancouver Island based..we also intend to follow the story back to their best customer..Vancouver!

And include wine pairing suggestions along the way.

 fannybayoysterbar_oyster-platter-charcuterie

Nick DeWitt/Ray Silvey  –  Fanny Bay Oysters  Vancouver Island

Nick is the Beach Manager..(let’s face it, he’s an Oyster Farmer. A damn good one.)

Ray is Fanny Bay Sales Manager.

The guys give us a backgrounder on how FB got its start, what they’re growing and how farming oysters has become a very competitive business.

The boys throw in some tips about the do’s & don’ts of working with fresh oysters and favourite liquid pairings.

Issac Martin Del Campo    General Manager  Fanny Bay Oyster Bar  Vancouver

Issac got his oyster basic training with Frenchy at Joe Fortes and hasn’t looked back. He’s also created a very inventive and free thinking wine and drink menu. This  was fun, trying to figure out what oysters go with what wines and what to order for those who don’t do oysters.

Recently opened at 762 Cambie St. in Vancouver’s Stadium District, Fanny Bay Oyster Bar is  providing a true, tide-to-table feast to the heart of the city with its 50-seat dining room — which includes a dedicated, 16-seat oyster bar — and a full bar as well as a retail shellfish market where patrons can purchase take-home catches like fresh, live or frozen oysters and clams, mussels, lobster, crab

Live shucked, fresh and frozen oysters and clams, scallops, shrimp and prawns. Part of the Taylor Shellfish Family of Farms, Fanny Bay Oyster Bar offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch as well as daily happy hour specials. www.fannybayoysters.com

Tim Turyk  Proprietor  Unsworth Vineyards Cowichan Valley  Vancouver Island

Ron Bogdonov    General Manager Unsworth Vineyards

 File 2016-09-02, 8 57 01 AM

This is a two parter because there’s a lot to take in at Unsworth. New winery grounds, restaurant update, busy tasting room, key tourism wine destination and a rising star in the BC wine community.

It was Will Flatt and the Rose he brought to the house. That’s what did it.

We loved that Unsworth Rose. As good as anything being made in Canada.

Reminded me of Bordeaux.

Went looking for more..sorry Sold Out. (I blamed Will for telling EVERYBODY)

They’re making more Rose these days but they’re also creating a very interesting portfolio.

And that’s where we start with Tim and Ron.

How did they pull this off, under the radar so to speak, in the Cowichan Valley?

The day we talked Chris Turyk had just returned from an extended stay on the wine team at Hawksworth  in Vancouver.

He feels like a team leader for the future of Unsworth.  Plus, from his Hawksworth experience  he now has a huge overview of what makes great World wines.

Sitting in with him is Winery Chef Steve Elskens, who arrived in the Cowichan Valley from kitchens in Belgium fully formed and ready to go.

They make a great team..Chef throwing out menu items and Chris recommending Unsworth wines to pair with well constructed plates.

Enjoy!!

September 3rd, 2016 – Eric McCormack

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner

DO REAL MEN DRINK PINK?  Let’s ask Eric McCormack!  Sommelier Pam Cohen pours 6 Roses for Savvy Series.

The Guys from Tacofino. From a truck in Tofino to a new location in Yaletown.

THE SHOW

Eric McCormack –  Traveller

Given the many choices on TV,  you may have missed  Eric McCormack in  Lonesome Dove or Andromeda Strain, Trust me, Perception or  Full Circle. However,  it’s fair to say that none of us missed his starring role for 8 years as Will Truman in Will and Grace. Here was a series so fresh, like a wild drum solo..you didn’t know where it was headed until the lines were delivered by a killer cast.

Eric McCormack - Travellers

Eric McCormack – Travellers

Eric has moved on to many new roles. His latest  ‘Travellers’  is shooting in Vancouver for Showcase/Netflicks with a air date debut of October 17th at 9PM.

I initially asked him to join me at the studios of Roundhouse Radio to talk about Travellers, Will and Grace, his one man show fundraising for Cancer Research and because he knows his wines..and yes because he’s a great guy who’s  funny as hell and makes me/us laugh.

But when I saw that Sommelier Pam Cohen from Marquis Wine Cellars was doing another Savvy Series on Rose..I decided to put them together.

Because Pam really knows her wines and  because Rose has presented a image problem for some “men” who don’t want to be seen with pink in their glass.

Thus, a manly man was needed to step  forward and Drink the Pink. Be the Guy. Enter Eric McCormack..known for years now as the gayest man on TV- Will Truman.

FYI – He’s a great Dad and Husband, a pal to your host and well versed on his wines.

Eric McCormack - The concert I never gave

August 27th, 2016-A Glass Full of Miracles

hello

Tasting Room Radio Post Banner

A Glass Full of Miracles is the amazing  Story of Mike Grgich – The man who fired the “Shot Heard Round the World” – in the Judgement of  Paris tasting of 1976,  as told by his daughter Violet Grgich!

And wine writer and expert Kurtis Kolt presents  Top Drop Vancouver Year 3!!

THE SHOW

A Glass Full of Miracles is the memoir of Mike Grgich.

“My life has been filled with miracles’” Mike Grgich says. “How else do you explain that a little boy from a little village in Croatia now has his wine on display in the Smithsonian Institution, in the same place as Abraham Lincoln’s hat and Neal Armstrong’s space suit?”

Mike Grgich, the youngest in a family of 11, studied enology and viticulture at Croatia’s University of Zagreb with the goal of making great wine. While he was a student, a professor whispered to him about California, a paradise where winemakers were free to make the best wine possible. Just before graduating, he fled Croatia to escape communism. With $32 sewn in his shoe and after spending time in Vancouver , Mike Grgich finally arrived in California after four years of adversity and uncertainty. The book takes readers along Mike’s journey from communism to freedom, becoming a California winemaker and earning his place as a Napa Valley icon.

Banner

An inductee to the Vintners Hall of Fame, Grgich crafts wines in the classic Old World tradition that have won a stream of local and international awards, establishing Grgich Hills Estate as one of the premier wineries in the U.S. and the world.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the famous Judgment of Paris.

In 1976, Steven Spurrier, an Englishman who ran a fine wine shop in Paris, decided to promote his wine shop by organizing a blind tasting to coincide with America’s Bicentennial celebrations. For the tasting, he gathered together the best French judges, the finest French wines and he added in a few wines from some upstart winemakers in California. The unimaginable happened: the 1973 Chardonnay, crafted by Mike Grgich for Chateau Montelena, won with the highest total score of 132 points. This momentous verdict placed Napa Valley on the global wine map and set the bar for Chardonnay in Napa Valley.

The following year Grgich joined with Austin Hills of the Hills Bros. Coffee Company to open what became Grgich Hills Estate. The first vintage that Grgich crafted at the new winery was one of 221 Chardonnays from around the world entered into “The Great Chicago Chardonnay Showdown.” The 1977 Grgich Hills Chardonnay emerged triumphant with the first place ribbon and the Chicago Tribune called it “The best Chardonnay in the world!”

George Taber, the Time magazine reporter who broke the story of the Paris Tasting and later was the author of “Judgment of Paris” about the famed tasting, praises “A Glass Full of Miracles:” “Mike Grgich may be small in stature, but he is a giant in the world of wine. His new book dramatically tells his full story, which is a great tale of a dream come true…there are a lot more aspects to Mike’s life than just Cabernet and Chardonnay. It’s a great and fun read.”

This feature interview consists of a 2009 interview I did with Mike at the Hotel Vancouver and a phone conversation I had with his daughter Violet just this past week.

Violet is now the General Manager of Grgich Hills.

Mike and Violet take us through  the Paris Tasting,  the recent 40th anniversary of the Judgement of Paris..plus ..the forthcoming 40th anniversary of the winery in July 2017.

Kurtis Kolt – Top Drop Vancouver / Year Three

 Kurtis Kolt

“The One Wine Tasting of the Year You Shouldn’t Miss” – Western Living Magazine

Embarking on its third year, Top Drop Vancouver is a two day trade and consumer event being held at the Roundhouse in Yaletown and various Vancouver restaurants  September  7/8 , bringing together a collection of small, hands-on wineries, craft breweries, cideries and food purveyors who are passionate about their craft.

Their  focus is terroir-influenced, handcrafted wines, and the people behind them.

They believe in the importance in farming one’s own fruit and/or being constantly engaged with grape-growers to ensure sustainability and a high standard of viticultural practices. They believe in wines that reflect their vintage, and wines that aren’t suffocated by vinicultural trickery. They believe in winemaking decisions that are made by a winemaker, and not by a board of directors or marketing team.

http://topdropvancouver.com/participants/

They believe in those who take chances. They believe these kinds of wines, honest wines of integrity, need a time and place to have their story told.

They also believe craft beer, cider, along with authentic and sustainable produce, dairy, meat and seafood are part of the same conversation, which is why they’re proud to showcase some of the  best in those areas.

Kurtis

Kurtis is  a Vancouver-based wine consultant who writes about wine, presents seminars, hosts events, judges wine competitions, works with restaurants on their wine programs.
His  background is in running restaurants around Vancouver, most recently managing Gastown’sSalt Tasting Room until 2010 when he received the ‘Sommelier of the Year’ award at the 2010 Vancouver International Wine Festival. Kurtis has various certifications and credits through London’s Wine & Spirit Education Trust, the Court of Master Sommeliers & the Winemaking Program at UC Davis.

His great  wine column is published every Wednesday in Canada’s largest urban weekly, The Georgia Straight.

Mulligan Stew August 20th 2016- The Tragically Hip

hello

MulliganStew Header_1
Not your normal Mulligan Stew show.
Screen Shot 2016-08-20 at 9.40.14 AM

Gord2It’s not often in a lifetime that your know you’re about to lose a friend but you can celebrate their career and achievements as an artist and person.
However The Tragically Hip are playing their final concert Saturday night in their hometown Kingston Ontario.
It’s the last one because, as we all well know, lead singer/writer/heart and soul  of the group Gord Downey has been advised his battle with cancer is not winnable.
The boys chose to tour Canada one more time..to wild applause and buckets of tears.
I’m a guy who has made his living with words..To my astonishment, I find it almost impossible to form words about this tragedy..
I just get as teary as everyone else..I even reached out to a friend who knows the band very well..hoping his words would show the way.
So..I’ve left it to the only communication I can understand..The Music.
Six Hip tracks are featured throughout the show..they speak to all of us.
Please enjoy and remember the “the boys”….
Thank you Gord..Hope you can feel the love of an entire country.
