Elvin Bishop was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 for his work with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Just one year later, he was also added to the ranks of the Blues Hall of Fame in his own right. This year, Elvin was nominated for a Grammy for his latest album, Something Smells Funky Round Here.
On this episode, Terry talks to Elvin about his amazing 50-year-plus career. Elvin talks about his family’s reaction to his decision to pursue music as a career, his induction into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame with the Butterfield Blues Band, protest music in 2019, and his mentors Otis Rush and Little Smokey Smothers.
Terry talks to writer and producer Nick Vallelonga about his Golden Globe-nominated film Green Book. Set in 1962, the film tells the story of Vallelonga’s father Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) a bouncer from the Bronx who is hired to drive and protect pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mashershala Ali) on a concert tour from New York to the Deep South. The pair use “The Green Book” to guide them to establishments safe for African-Americans.
Daenna tastes over 2000 wines throughout the year and reviews many of them for her website and various publications.
All of the wines we’ll talk about on this episode can be found tasted and rated at www.winediva.ca and www.winescores.ca There are many more to be found there.
(For your convenience we’ve added the wines we talked about below, as well)

vanwinefest The Goods
Harry Hertscheg is the perfect guy to guest here as he loves his VanWineFest numbers plus he’s been on TRR many times and we seem to have developed a “shorthand” in getting through all the information the festival contains.
Most importantly, California is the featured wine region this year. After all the fires, droughts then floods they could use all the love we have to offer.
They were the first ever featured region via Robert Mondavi Wines and Vancouver is the closest international market to California.
Remember, one of the ways we can help them recover from the disasters is to buy their wines and send our support. California is the single most popular wine region in BC. Now is when they need us most.
But first, you have to have a ticket to get in. Harry has some ideas for you. How to get in and how to work the room.
“I look at all of the vineyards we own, and all of the individual lots of wines that we make, and the thousands of barrels we have sitting in our cellar and sometimes I think, you gotta be kidding me! After I’ve sufficiently recovered from my daily panic attack, I take off my coat, dig in my heels and take it one barrel at a time. It’s a rewarding job that I love.”
Randy Ullom
Hired by Jess Jackson in 1992 as Winemaker for some of their smaller and international vineyards, Randy was handed his most prestigious assignment in 1997 – Winemaster for Kendall-Jackson Winery.
A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Randy became interested in wine during a three-year stay in Chile, while on sabbatical from college in the early 1970s. His stay inspired a cross-country trek through Chile’s vast wine-growing regions. On his return to the United States, he entered Ohio State University to study crop production with a specialty in Viticulture and Enology and received his degree in 1975.
After six years as a vineyard manager and Winemaker in Ohio and upstate New York, Randy moved to California to become associate Winemaker at De Loach Vineyards in Sonoma County. He was promoted to Winemaker and Vice President in 1991. The wines produced during his tenure were consistent gold medal winners at wine competitions.
Dude looks like a Sherriff from Dodge City..Oversees the growing and creating of 5 Million cases of wine from 35 labels. (check their website below)
His job includes working with wines grown in Sonoma, Chile, Bordeaux, Australia and Italy.
This is a fun interview..with lots of information on their wines. We love these wines..and why not? They take such great care in their craft!!

It all started as a Christmas Tradition many years ago at the CBC.
Christmas songs and stories exchanged in a studio with artists who knew and
respected each other.
were in that studio years ago and over the years
we’ve always talked about keeping that tradition alive.
(As always in memory of our producer Susan Englebert, who lost her battle
with Cancer)
When Barney Bentall started doing Christmas Food Bank Tours with his Cariboo
Express the possibility of gathering once again became a reality.
On the next Stew, a repeat of Christmas in the Round – Year One. Recorded
exactly 3 years ago in the boardroom at Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver.
The Rounders are:
Shari Ulrich – iconic singer, songwriter, and musician. Roy Forbes – Host of Roy’s Record Room and much-admired artist. Barney Bentall – He’s everywhere and always making great music. Bringing
joy! Shaun Verreault – formerly Wide Mouth Mason. String Slinger. Sings like a
bird Jim Byrnes – St Louis born…West Coast raised. Carries the blues with him.
Good Actor. Craig Northey – co-founder of The Odds. Touring with Steven Page. Gun for
hire. Solid Songwriter. Wicked funny.
Everyone brings a favorite Christmas song and personal story to exchange.
Fun was had by all… Hope you like.
Susan would have loved it.
This week, its Terry’s first special of the Christmas season with Serena Ryder. The Canadian hit-maker previews her new album Christmas Kisses, produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin.
“When I was a young girl, I would spend hours upon hours locked away in my room listening and singing to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simon and Chet Baker” shares Ryder. “It’s been a dream of mine to be able to sing an entire album in this style – and also a dream to be able to embrace the spirit of Christmas in a genuinely joyful way.”
The podcast includes four tracks from the new record, including “Christmas Song” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” “White Christmas” and “Blue Christmas”.
The great thing about Serena Ryder’s Christmas Kisses album is that –
she’s done all her homework.
Serena grew up in a family that embraced Christmas and their soundtrack
included Ella, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, and Chet Baker.
Classic singers..all from the jazz world.
So Christmas Kisses worked on two levels for Serena.
One – it allowed her to do her first season album with classic Christmas
songs she’s loved since she was born.
Two – she finally gets to do something she’s long wanted to do – a jazz-influenced
album. I sure hope it’s not the last. She gets IT.
And the last track on the album…Christmas Song was recorded on her iPhone
for her producer, the legend Bob Ezrin as a demo.
Bob liked it so much he put it on the album – as is!!
Merry Christmas
Earlier this year, the team from Hy’s and Gotham visited with Road 13
Vineyards, the 2018 Canadian Winery of the Year, to craft a proprietary red
wine exclusively for Hy’s of Canada’s three British Columbia restaurants.
Working carefully with Road 13, they created a gorgeous blend that
perfectly compliments Hy’s and Gotham’s menus.
The wine:
named 18-six-18, was added to their wine lists in early December. It’s a
great blend from Road 13’s Blind Creek Vineyard in The Similkameen. 34%
Merlot. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon. 5% Petit Verdot. 15% Malbec
18-six-18
Notes of Cassis, Black fruit. In the mouth, a sense of black pepper, sage,
dark chocolate, anise and more.
Only available at the three BC restaurants.
In addition, Gotham will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in early 2019
and we get some stories on those years.
Gotham
Gotham is famous for being the home away from home for visiting hockey
teams, film and music stars.
Megan brings perspective on the 20 years of Gotham and how much the
restaurant business has changed in Vancouver in those 20 years.
Sam and Steve talk about creating their blend and then answer today’s three
questions. Wines of the Year. Trends. Wine Gifts.
Dan Wright – Winemaker at Unsworth Vineyards (Cowichan Valley)
Dan Wright (Unsworth)
I’ve done a number of Unsworth features. With Chris and Tim Turyk. However,
I had never interviewed Winemaker Dan Wright.
First time we met I told him the next interview was his. Along comes new
releases from Unsworth and the perfect opportunity to get together.
Dan talks about new releases, the 2015 Cuvee De L’ile (traditional method
sparkling) and a new dessert wine called Mistelle. (Mistelle is made from
100% estate Pinot Gris fortified with a spirit made from the Pinot Gris
Lees)
and 2016 Symphony (red blend – Cabernet Libre & Petit Milo)
Dan also describes Charme – Charme Rose – Pinot Noir And the very popular Rose
Rhys Pender – Master of Wine/Partner at Little Farms Winery/ Wine Plus WSET
Educator
Rhys Pender – Little Farm & Wine Plus (Lionel Trudel)
Rhys is the first of three wine ambassadors/teachers who I’m pleased to call
a friend.
(Next Week, Kurtis Kolt from The Georgia Straight and DJ Kearney Global Wine
Expert and New District consultant will be featured in a special on Wines of
the Year, Trends of 2018 and Wine Gifts.
We’ll publish all three lists before we’re done.)
As a Master of Wine, Rhys had tasted thousands of wines, so to ask him to
narrow his recommendations down to a handful is a tough call. It took him a
day or so to really think about his choices but here they are and Rhys
explains why.
He took on the Trends and Wine Gifts questions as well.
Trends – Natural becoming mainstream but worrying trends of sugaring up
wines.
And as gifts – Fitz Blanc de Blanc ($42.50). In fact any Blanc de Blancs
bubbly. Or Chablis or Beaujolais because that’s what I want!
Terry talks to Andy Shauf about his band Foxwarren’s new self-titled album, a record that was more than a decade in the making. Andy shares insights into four songs from the record, including “Your Small Town”, “To Be”, “I’ll Be Alright”, and “Fall Into A Dream.” Plus, Andy provides a few details on his forthcoming solo record due out in late 2019.
