THE SHOW

Part 1 of our wine tour of New Zealand took us through the Auckland area and on to Hawkes Bay and that’s where we begin Part 2.   Elephant Hill Elephant Hill Elephant Hill is a stunning and innovative winery estate and restaurant located on the idyllic Te Awanga coast, in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.
They create 2 very fine chardonnays piggyslots , Sauv blanc, a white & red blends called Le Phant Blanc/Rouge and a 5 star Viognier and favour Syrah on the Red side.. We sit down in their fabulous restaurant with Viticulturist Jon Peet and sales and marketing leader Vince Labatt. The word I get from the NZ wine business is… watch these guys..they’re very good.   http://www.elephanthill.co.nz/ Pask Staying in the Hawkes Bay area on North Island NZ we head for Pask.

On Roys Hill Overlooking Gimblett Gravels with
Greg Allinson (Pask)

On our tour of NZ #1 we talked to Kate Ranburnd the famous winemaker at Pask. This time we take to the Gimblett Gravels fields and meet the guys who grow in that stunning region. Gimblett Gravels Gimblett Gravels     Pask’s 59 hectares of vineyards are located on Gimblett Road where Chris Pask was first to plant in the region now known as the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District®.
Formed over 100 years ago when the Ngaruroro River changed its course, the light, stony soils of the region are low in nutrients, completely free draining, and create the perfect environment for growing premium quality grapes. Their  very first vintage of 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 5 stars in Cuisine Magazine.
Since then Pask wines have consistently enjoyed gold medal and  trophy success in London, Australia, Asia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand across a range of varietals and winestyles. Pask is one of New Zealand’s leading wineries with an enviable reputation for excellence  around the world for over 25 years. Pask has been a member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) since its inception.
Kate Radburnd spent five years as Chair of the SWNZ advisory/working group. I get to  meet Danny van Selm

the vineyard manager and Greg Allinson – direct sales and marketing manager. Interview takes place on a picnic table under a large tree  in the middle of Gimblett Gravels.   http://www.pask.co.nz/ Trinity Hill Their  story began in 1987 when John Hancock met Robert and Robyn Wilson in their London restaurant Bleeding Heart. Over a bottle of John’s award-winning Chardonnay, the concept of a Hawkes Bay winery was born. They were convinced they could produce world-class red wines as well as white in this region of New Zealand.
John recognized the outstanding potential of Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district and in 1993 Trinity Hill became one of the region’s early pioneers, planting grape vines on a barren plot on the former bed of the Ngaruroro River. The first Gimblett Road wines, barrel-aged, were released in 1998 (vintage 1997); Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot and Syrah, to critical acclaim and a number of gold medals and trophies. In 2000, a further 20 hectare parcel of prime Gimblett Gravels land was purchased, named “Gimblett Stones” where Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot plus areas of Tempranillo, Syrah and Viognier were planted.
By 2001 The Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association was set up with 34 wineries and winegrowers from a “terroir”-defined area of the old Ngaruroro Riverbed, including Gimblett Road. Trinity Hill was and remains a founding member. In 2002, the first vintage super-premium wine Homage Syrah was made. When it was released in 2004 it received critical acclaim world-wide. The 2006 vintage of Homage Syrah won the Supreme Award at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards in 2007. John Hancock is our guest http://www.trinityhill.com/ http://www.gimblettgravels.com/ Sileni Estates Sileni Estates is a major vineyard and winery development in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand’s oldest established vineyard area. The first vintage was in 1998. Sileni boasts a state of the art winery designed to crush over 1500 tonnes of grapes.

They grow wines in a new sub-region of Gimblett Gravels The Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District in Hawke’s Bay has recently been launched to celebrate and promote one of New Zealand’s premium wine-growing sub-regions.  The area extends over more than 2,000 hectares on the western side of the Heretaunga plains and includes the largest concentration of quality vineyards in Hawke’s Bay.  It now has 10 winery members, including Sileni Estates. Sileni Estates has implemented and maintains both the ISO14001 and Sustainable Winegrowing certification.
http://www.sileni.co.nz/ Mission Estate  In 1838 a group of French Missionaries (with the blessing of the Pope)
arrived and established a Marist Mission in the north of New Zealand. 1851 In 1851 a mission station was established near the Ngaruroro River between Napier and Hastings at Pakowhai.  In 1858, the missionaries moved to land they had purchased at Meeanee and a major community was established.

A cottage for living quarters was transported from Pakowhai and later a Church, school and study halls were built.  Vines were planted to produce both sacramental and table wine.  The first record of a commercial sale dates back to 1870 when a parcel of mostly dry reds were sold. Today Mission Estate is Hawke’s Bay’s oldest winery, with a well-respected reputation in the New Zealand market as a producer of consistent quality, value for money wines. Winemaker Paul Mooney  Paul Mooney has been the winemaker at Mission Estate for over 30 years, making him one of the most experienced winemakers in New Zealand.

Richmond Plains has been growing and making organic wine since inception in 1991 and its grapes are certified by BioGro and Demeter New Zealand. Tohu Wines..Maori Owned

Tohu produces award-winning New Zealand wine crafted from grapes grown in the  breath-takingly beautiful, Awatere Valley Vineyard. When Tohu launched in 1998 we were the world’s first Māori owned wine company.
Since then they’ve  grown a reputation for producing premium wine in a range of varieties, winning awards for  Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Méthode Traditionnelle.   . Tohu Wines now has a sister brand.  Aronui Wines was launched early in 2013 by the whanau who have been brining you award-winning Tohu Wines for over 15 years.
The word Aronui derives from the Māori mythological basket of knowledge associated with crafts, arts and working with the land in beneficial ways. This reflects their  commitment to caring for the land and their  artisanal approach to winemaking. As the owners are kaitiaki (guardians of their natural resources) and focused on sustainable enterprise, both Tohu and Aronui vineyards are certified by Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand (SWNZ), the  company is CEMARS accredited, and the wines are carboNZero certified.
Whenua Matua (Significant Lands) is the name of our Aronui vineyard. It is located in Nelson’s Moutere Valley – an area fast becoming an aromatics powerhouse. This compliments their Tohu vineyards located in Marlborough, where they continue to produce  Single Vineyard Estate grown wines and exceptional Kaumatua-Reserve range, named after special elders from within their whanau.

May 31st 2014 – Beautiful Naramata BC

hello

Tasting Room Radio B_BANNER2
For the 12th year in-a-row The Wineries of the Naramata Bench showcase their new releases in Vancouver.
Ten  of the Best from The Bench.
And The Wine Diva returns from Spain with tales of Jerez Sherry!!
Enjoy!

THE SHOW

The Naramata Bench Wineries Association is a group of 24 award-winning wineries located  along both sides of  a 14 kilometer winding country road overlooking Okanagan Lake.
Located near Penticton in the Southern Okanagan, the wineries are situated above sweeping sand cliffs that rise from Okanagan Lake, hence the name “The Naramata Bench.”
The Bench
Each winery on The Bench have their own specialties and philosophies of wine-making, but what they all share is a commitment to quality in their wine-making, and a belief that authentic wine experiences should be offered in a friendly and relaxed manner.
The wines we’re pouring and talking about today are the very same wines that are now on shelves or will be coming this summer. Having spent 5 years on The Bench, I can only add,  they make great wine and even better neighbours.
Guests include the following owners/winemakers:

We welcome back from 2 weeks in Spain  Daenna van Mulligen  –  #notmysister
We get caught up on two regions she visited and tasted in.
Ribera del Duero   www.drinkriberawine.com
Ribera del Duero was named wine region of the year 2012 by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
Ribero del Duero. Spain

Ribero del Duero. Spain

Wines produced in the Ribera del Duero DO derive almost exclusively from red grapes.
The Albillo  grape is the only white variety grown, white wines being mostly destined for local consumption.
The vast majority of production is dedicated to Tempranillo,  the dominant red varietal in the northern half of the Spanish peninsula.
Two of the most famous labels are  Pesquera (100% Tempranillo) and Vega Sicilia (Tempranillo with Bordeaux Blend varietals )
Jerez    www.andalucia.com/cities/jerez.htm
Jerez Sherry
Jerez holds worldwide acclaim for its sherry and brandy production. The word Jerez is derived from Arabic and has now become synonymous with the English word ‘sherry’. The city is equally famous for its fine horses as well as Flamenco music and dance.

Daenna will give us all a great primer on these two fantastic regions of Spain.  For example, she spent several days hanging with London Mixologists who came all that way just to mix Sherry based cocktails.
She’s not talking about your parents jug sherry my friends..that’s like comparing Lead to Gold.

BC Chefs Urgently Call to Kill Bill 24-Interview!

hello

“Chefs and Restaurateurs have worked hard over the past 40 years to support our farms for not only the food they produce but also the culture they bring to our industry. Growing local food is not a thing of the past it is our present and our future, never has the demand been higher for locally sourced nutritious food.” – Scott Jaeger, president, Chefs’ Table Society of British Columbiachefs4alr

  • The Chefs’ Table Society of BC wants to stop Bill 24, and needs help to spread the word, before it’s too late.

They urgently call on people of BC to read this and then send a note to the government Tell BC Government to Stop Bill 24

Bill 24 proposes to divide the Agriculture land reserve into 2 zones, the changes being put forward are in zone 2 which contains 90%  of the protected land. This will essentially open the door to remove 90% of the mere 5% of B.C.’s  ALR.

The Chefs’ Table Society of British Columbia has had a social media storm brewing – with selfies and calls to action with the hash tag #chefs4ALR and #killbill24

Now they are calling upon the media and public to help spread the word and call to protect BC farmland  – read this open letter, entitled Farmland is Important to Me.

THE SHOW

This gathering, organized by Wines of BC,  was an opportunity to sit with the 6 wine talents  below and get up to speed on what’s going on at their wineries, their regions and their Spring/Summer releases.

We start with the host of the gathering..the one and only DJ Kearney. [divider]  David Lebovitz is the author of My Paris Kitchen. Here’s David’s description of his life and times.

Eiffle Tower

Eiffle Tower

I began working in restaurants at the age of sixteen, until I ended up at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California, working with Alice Waters and co-owner, Executive Pastry Chef Lindsey Shere, who I consider my mentor. I spent nearly thirteen years in the kitchens at Chez Panisse before leaving in 1999. I left the restaurant business in 1999 to pursue writing books and now live in Paris full time. My Books I’ve written six books. The first two were the critically acclaimed Room for Dessert and Ripe for Dessert which are now out of print and considered collectible. Afterward I went on to write The Great Book of Chocolate, which was my ode to my favorite ingredient – chocolate! The Perfect Scoop is my best-selling guide to making homemade ice cream, sorbets, sherbets, and all the good stuff that gets swirled and mixed in and ladled on top. The Sweet Life in Paris tells the story of my move to Paris, the ups and the downs. It includes stories about how I adjusted to life in a city that sometimes left me scratching my head, but ultimately won me over. The book features nearly fifty recipes, both sweet and savory, and was a finalist for an International Association of Culinary Professionals Literary Award.
My Paris Kitchen

My Paris Kitchen

My most recent book is Ready for Dessert, a collection of my all-time favorite recipes, some from my first two books, which were updated and revised. Plus there’s plenty of new recipes for cakes, cookies, ice creams, pies, crisps, and other treats.  and now,,, David gives us My Paris Kitchen. A really fun read..great stories that help us understand the complexities of Paris,  Parisians and their food… and its my wife Megs newest favourite book! www.davidlebovitz.com     [divider] ,,,and we finish with two of Australia’s best. Neil McGuigan  from McGuigan Neil McGuigan first rose to fame in 1985 when restaurateur and wine merchant, Johnny Walker referred to Neil as “the most brilliant young winemaker of his time”. He has lived up to these expectations by leading the McGuigan Wines team to the prestigious title of International Winemaker of the Year and Australian Producer of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012, becoming the first winemaker in the competitions 44 year history to win this award 3 times at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Alongside this, Neil also picked up the International White Winemaker of the Year in 2009 and 2012 at the International Wine Challenge, London. Neil McGuigan is one of Australia’s foremost winemakers and brings over 30 years experience in the wine industry to Australian Vintage and McGuigan Wines. Growing up in a family of winemakers in the Hunter Valley naturally led Neil to pursue a career in winemaking and viticulture. Neil is a respected wine judge at National and International levels. Neil was appointed CEO of Australian Vintage in July 2010. https://www.mcguiganwines.com.au Nick Keukenmeester from Heartland  Nick is the GM for Ben Glaetzer’s Heartland. Nick divides his time between the winery, the tasting room, the vineyards and his  distributors around the world making sure everything is perfect. I found him romancing a rack of ribs at Memphis Blues on Broadway. Ben Glaetzer  Co-Owner and Winemaker A key factor to the success of Heartland is that the  winemaker Ben Glaetzer  is one of the owners.  Ben has received innumerable accolades from around the world for his winemaking prowess over a number of years. Although Ben is still young by winemaker standards; his list of accomplishments places him among the giants of Australian and international winemaking. Ben has been made a “Baron of the Barossa” for his contribution to the cultural fabric of the Barossa Valley. Life membership of this wine fraternity is by invitation only. In July 2011, July 2012 & July 2013 Ben Glaetzer, Glaetzer Wines was awarded 5 stars in James Halliday 2012, 2013 & 2014 Wine Companions. WINERIES

KETTLE VALLEY

What started out as a hobby for friends Bob Ferguson and Tim Watts became an obsession when they were granted the third winery licence on the Naramata Bench. Their first blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay set the tone for the Kettle Valley style of intense full bodied reds and whites, and they constantly challenge the assumptions about what cannot thrive on the versatile Naramata terroir. Think of this stop on the TDM Reserva tour as tasting, touring and talking.

Read more in TDM’s words.

POPLAR GROVE

Founded in 1993, Poplar Grove was one of the original 5 wineries on the Naramata Bench. Ian Sutherland built his reputation starting with just 2 and a half acres, and his 1995 Cabernet Franc quickly established Poplar Grove on the world scene. Now including over 110 acres of prime property, the focus has expanded to include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot and a signature blend called The Legacy. Savor the wines, enjoy food from the excellent kitchen and revel in some unforgettable winemaking stories. Read more.

LA FRENZ

Since transplanting themselves from the Australian wine industry, Jeff and Niva Martin have put their small “cult” winery on the world map by winning major awards. In 2011, La Frenz won the most gold medals of any winery at the All Canadian Wine Championships and the Northwest Wine Summit. Jeff looks after the vineyards, Niva runs the tasting room – and they promise a tasting to remember that includes tasting your way through much of the portfolio.

Mulligan Stew May 17th

hello

Three – count em – THREE wonderful artists guesting on one Stew.

The first is a name and voice very familiar to the CKUA audience
David Ward is producing next week’s Bob Fest in Calgary.
It’s the annual celebration  of Bob Dylan’s Birthday.

Bob Dylan’s birthday (May 24th, 1941) is celebrated around the world, and this year Dylan enthusiasts in Calgary will have two opportunities to gather and revel in the music of the Bard from Hibbing, Minnesota.
  Saturday, May 24th, at 9pm
Ironwood Stage & Grill will host the annual Birthday Bash
 Sunday, May 25th, at 2pm
National Music Centre will host Blood On The Tracks: Reassembled and Reimagined
The weekend begins with the 8th Annual Bob Dylan Birthday Bash Saturday, May 24th, at 9pm at the Ironwood Stage & Grill.

Longtime Dylan fan Patrick McIntyre (proprietor of the Ironwood) has provided a home for the annual BobFest since 2007 by inviting local singers and instrumentalists to take to the stage and put their own particular spin on songs both familiar and obscure from the Bob Dylan Songbook.
Among the many performers joining bandleader Steve Pineo this time around will be local favourites Tom Phillips and Tim Williams.
The following afternoon, ten musicians will fill the stage at the National Music Center and engage Dylan enthusiasts with their interpretation of the songs that comprise the album Blood On The Tracks.
Join singers J.R. Shore, Ruth Purves-Smith, Clea Roddick, Conrad Walz, and David Ward as they reassemble and reimagine Tangled Up In Blue, Idiot Wind, Shelter From The Storm, and nine other songs that Dylan wrote for his beloved 1974 classic.

Next Guest is Royal Wood
Here’s a primer on what we’ll be talking about from Royals own website

Royal WoodWhen I was a child music flowed through me. Art sprang forth whether I asked for it or not. Sadness seemed to drip from my finger tips and find a page to exhale onto – always leaving me joyful. As if the exorcism had removed the demons. Sadly though, during the writing and creation of We Were Born To Glory, I somehow got caught up in the “business” of the music business. I temporarily forgot the joy that came from creation for creation’s sake. As a result I created an album, though successful, that left me empty with ultimately no joy to fill the space. At the same time too my marriage was dissolving in front of me and suddenly the two main bedrocks of my foundation washed away. I was adrift. Thankfully though I was able to move to a small cottage in rural Ireland, remove the noise, quiet my surroundings and finally hear my inner voice again. The all knowing compass spoke and soon the veil lifted. I made art again. Music flowed. Answers were found and puzzles solved. Sarah and I decided to separate, but remain loving friends and in each other’s corner.
Purpose is the ultimate driver. It is indeed what now gets me out of bed in the morning. I want to make art. I want to create. I want to perform music. I want to learn. I want to love. I want to be healthy. I want to leave a legacy for upcoming generations that gives them a brighter future and not impede their chance of survival. I want to be the change. I want…
How will I accomplish all of these “wants” though? The ancient proverb “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” is the answer. The key is not to ask how, but simple to ask for what you want and to move. Take action and attempt to get there. Somewhere along the way I will look back and realize not only did I reach the island, but I swam a great distance and grew in the process.
To that end, I thought I would let you know what I am doing these days. I am living in TO, but I have also taken over my parents farmland and moved to the countryside near Peterborough as well. In honour of “being the change” I am most excited to tell you that I also partnered with an organic collective called Castanea. They will begin planting organic crops and running their collective on the land this spring. I am in the early stages of building my recording studio now called “The Farm” on the property. It should be up and running by the end of the year. I am also in the progress of attempting to move the property to off grid. It’s a long term dream, but I am moving steadily ahead.
The new album “The Burning Bright” is obviously out and taking on a life of it’s own. I’ll be shooting another video soon. I’ll be touring Canada and Europe this year, with plans of US shows as well to be announced soon. I am also producing a young Canadian artist named Peter Katz this April with my production pal Bill Lefler.
Of course I also continue to study wine, compose and arrange music, create art in various forms both visual and the written word that will someday find their way out into the world, spend time with my loved ones and ever growing family, and most importantly, dream big.
“Purpose”, you are a mighty force.

The history of rock n roll meets the future of power pop in Toronto-based Michael Rault, singer, guitarist, and frontman of the band that shares his name. With roots in punk and rhythm and blues, Rault mixes the classic pop rock influences of The Kinks and The Beatles with the psych-pop sounds of Os Mutantes, creating a sophisticated combination loaded with hooks. The key to Michael Rault’s music is in its simplicity: the expert mix of melody and momentum, his band’s skilled musicianship, and Rault’s focused song-writing all combine in perfectly compact resonance.

Rault recently moved from Edmonton to Toronto, where his new EP came to fruition. Set for release June 24 on Pirates Blend RecordsLiving Daylight, explores feelings of leaving home and trying to make your way in a new city. Back in Edmonton as a teenager, Rault got his start in punk bands before turning to the rhythm and blues masters for inspiration, honing his guitar work and songwriting prowess in the process. Having proved that he can hold his own ground alongside any Diddley-beat revivalist, Rault then set his eyes on the future, creating something that is equally indebted to the British Invasion and classic psych-pop, while fitting in nicely with new artists like Mikal CroninThe Fresh and Onlys, and King Tuff. Rault has an insane knack for melody and a very deep understanding of music history, something he has in common with Edmonton contemporaries like Mac DeMarcoTravis BretzerSean Nicholas Savage and Homeshake.

“This EP is a nice stepping stone on the way to some even more interesting recordings in the future,” says Rault. “I feel like there are no longer any rules or boundaries in my mind as to what I can or can’t do in the studio or at shows. Whatever I can dream up is my style, and only until I get on to the next thing. I’m more excited about making music right now than I ever have been.”

may17thLiving Daylight was performed and recorded by Rault and his cousin Rene Wilson (Mint Recording Artist Renny Wilson) in Edmonton in spring 2013, between bedrooms and Riverdale Recorders studios. With Rault back in his hometown, he and his cousin were able to focus on perfecting the composition and sound of every track – and it shows. Everything about Rault’s recordings sounds at once classic and contemporary: fuzzed out guitars intersect swirling organs and taut rhythmic patterns, with subtly textured vocals soaring over undeniable hooks. Songs like the infectious “Lost Something” blend all the hallmarks of quintessential pop rock in perfect measurements, with its timeless chorus marrying psychedelic ambience and punk rock economy together in one flawless package. On “Too All My Friends” (named after one of his childhood friend’s misspelled tattoos), Rault effortlessly imbues the glint of 60s production into a powerful pop anthem.
As the current ascension in Michael Rault’s ever-evolving musical narrative, Living Daylight has all the ingredients of a contemporary classic, with a forward-thinking approach to ideas that transcend time and place.
