Howard Soon – Sandhill

 To quote Beppi Crosariol of the Globe and Mail “If anyone embodies the quality revolution in B.C. wine that’s taken place since the sip-while-you-slalom era, it’s Mr. Soon” Howard was the first ever guest on Tasting Room Radio. That’s how much we like him.
We found him walking through his brand new Sandhill Winery in downtown Kelowna. Even through the construction dust and unfinished walls, you could tell its going to be a fun destination.
Reflecting the man, I suppose. Very few people know the Okanagan as well as Howard. When he teams up with his friend Richard Cleave, they make beautiful wine together. Here’s another great chat with HoSo!!

Last year the always ambitious and greatly passionate Chef Bell launched Chefs for Oceans and cycled across Vancouver Island in support of healthy lakes, rivers and oceans; this year he’s taking on the entire country.

In 2012, Terry was named Sommelier of the Year by Vancouver Magazine, the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival and California’s Sunset Magazine, and he was also named one of the ‘Top Foodies Under 40’ by Western Living Magazine.
He was the first Canadian sommelier to become a regular panelist for Decanter Magazine, and he returns to London every year to judge the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge.
Terry is proud to continue to act as Festival Sommelier for the Vancouver International Wine Festival, a role which he has held for 13 years. Terry is regularly called upon by numerous media outlets for his natural ability to demystify wine in a relaxed, yet sophisticated manner. I was expecting a small 10 table bistro. What we all got was a sensational restaurant..with windows on three sides..and one of the best views in all of the Okanagan.

Roger Gillespie was born and raised in Winnipeg, but has worked throughout Canada in the restaurant business over the past 20 years including stints in Jasper Park, Alberta and Tofino and Whistler in BC. He eventually moved to the valley as food and beverage manager at the Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna. In 2004, he moved to Summerland and worked for Sumac Ridge Estate Winery and See Ya Later Ranch until he opened his own restaurant in Summerland, the Victoria Road Deli & Bistro, in June 2008.

The younger of the two Luckhurst sons, Joe, has been involved in Road 13 from Vancouver for several years. With a work ethic that is oddly familiar to the rest of the team at Road 13, he seems to have fully embraced Mick’s adage, “owners don’t need days off.”

Fairview Cellars is the culmination of a lifelong quest of Bill Eggert’s to own and operate his own winery.
The 10 acre property located adjacent to the first green of the Fairview Mountain Golf Course was purchased by Bill in 1989.  The vineyard was started in 1993. The high opinionated Mr Eggert also happens to be one of the very best winemakers in Canada.
Half the property was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon.  Cabernet Franc and Merlot were planted in equal parts to fill out the property.  One row of Syrah and one row of Petit Verdot were added later, and Sauvignon Blanc was planted on a lower terraced bench close to the first green in 2007.
If you happen to PLAY the first hole and go out of bounds..DO NOT attempt to retrieve your ball off Bill’s property.  I beg you.

Jon has released a very charming film called CHEF.

It’s about a chef who loses his high profile restaurant job in LA,  travels across the USA and in Miami  starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing  together his estranged family. From that point on it becomes a road film, driven by food and music.

Not a bad thing.

We know Jon from his work in the indy film  Swingers  plus Elf and both Iron Man blockbusters but this small film allows him to touch on themes lost in the larger films.

Love, trust, family. Food.

 Provence Rose is being featured for the month of June in BC Govt Liquor Stores.

Gulf Islands..specifically Salt Spring and the 2014 Hastings House “Chefs Across the Water”

Executive Winery Chef Chris Stewart leads the team at Mission Hill’s Terrace Restaurant, considered one of the top five-winery restaurants in the world. Chef Stewart brings his considerable cooking skills to Hastings House Country House Hotel on June 16^th for Chefs Across the Water.  The 5^th annual guest chef program features a new line-up of celebrity guest chef’s, putting their spin on island flavours in the Hastings House kitchen.

Before coming to British Columbia, Chef Stewart worked at the legendary English restaurant The Fat Duck, complete with its three Michelin stars, as Pasty Chef de Partie for Chocolate as well as Restaurant Chef de Partie.

A highlight of his tenure was his selection as a member of the culinary team that cooked a private dinner for Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle.
