The Similkameen is that spectacular valley in and around Keremeos and Cawston in Southern BC.

 

Many MANY wine fans drive right through on their way to Osoyoos and the rest of the Okanagan.

Albertans also do the same heading for the Coast.

The Point I’m trying to make is ..the wines out of this valley are some of the best anywhere in Canada.

Its a pretty basic show this week.. get together with my wine pals..always include a chef..and FISH YER BRAINS OUT!! 

We return to the site of last year’s 4F..The fabulous 7 ½ Diamond Ranch North of Princeton BC.   www.guestranchbc.com

Last year the  new bunkhouse wasn’t  quite ready, so we used that as a lame excuse to return –“ for the full experience.”

Yes, they have their own private lake..stocked with trophy  Kamloops trout, which can only be caught and released with barbless hooks.

Electric motors make sure the water quality is preserved.

It’s a small lake so you can stay in touch with those around you..watch the eagles do their foraging..ducks and their families, horses in the corrals and around the Ranch.

And we finally got to stay in the new bunkhouse..which is fact is a tricked out ocean going container..now covered inside and out in barn wood and really fine kitchens, stacked beds..with – wait for it – Flannel Sheets.

During the Summer  even though its hot during the day..at night it gets down to 10 degrees.

Showers and a really nice BIG front porch for just sitting and remembering the day.

Justin is also the Vice President of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association in the Okanagan.   Justin  and his spouse and partner Christy Hughes also publish the award-winning Okanagan HOME Magazine.

He also represents Sotheby’s in the Okanagan

It was Justin who liked the idea of Tasting Room Radio spending a couple of days soaking up  ranch life , the fishing, the food and the wines.

Chef Jeff Van Geest is one of British Columbia’s most celebrated chefs, focusing on locally procured foods from sustainable producer partners.

Jeff was born in St. Catharines, the heart of the Niagara region. His grandparents were farmers and taught him to respect what farm-fresh meant – which might explain Jeff’s desire to have a small garden on site at Miradoro, even if he doesn’t have time to tend it every day.

With his culinary training at the Vancouver Community College, Jeff landed an apprenticeship at Bishop’s restaurant in Vancouver – one of the earliest pioneers in sustainable cuisine. He worked his way through the ranks to Sous Chef before leaving to start his own restaurant: the Aurora Bistro. Highlighting field-to-table and honouring the farmer/chef relationship earned Jeff a reputation in the restaurant industry as someone who walked (or cooked) the talk.

After closing Aurora, Jeff accepted a position of Executive Sous Chef at Diva at the Met – another name on the who’s who list of British Columbia restaurants. Yet at every move in the culinary chain, thoughts of Jeff’s grandparent farmers stayed on his mind and the allure of rural living grew stronger. When Miradoro called in 2010, Jeff answered by moving his family to the Okanagan and the heart of British Columbia’s agricultural country.

Jeff cooked two great meals with meats supplied by Jason Pleym at Two Rivers Specialty Meats I North Vancouver.  Two Rivers is the go-to meat source in Western Canada.

Jason also included lots of their handmade specialty sausages, which were truly appreciated at breakfast, out on the water and as an appetizer for dinner.

Jeff is in the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame.  Plus, he’s an OK fisherman.  Not Hall of Fame material but maybe someday!!

John Weber – co-owner and winemaker at Orofino.  Similkameen Valley

 JOHN AND VIRGINIA WEBER both grew up in Southern Saskatchewan far away from anything to do with grapes and the wine industry. The closest they ever got to wine production was the jugs of chokecherry wine John’s parents made in their basement. Virginia studied nursing and became a registered nurse and John received a Bachelor of Arts in English and then went on to finish an Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

The Orofino winery, Canada’s only straw bale winery was constructed in 2004/2005. The eco friendly design consists of two buildings adjoined by a breezeway.

Six Similkameen vineyards currently supply Orofino, which made 5,200 cases in 2012. The winery’s own 5.5-acre vineyard includes blocks of five varietals planted in 1989, along with replacement blocks planted at various times since 1999. The latest addition, in 2010, was 0.6 acre of Petit Verdot.

John and Virginia are making exceptional wines in the Similkameen outside of Cawston, including Four Rieslings.

John’s next door neighbour. Fishing partner  and wine fan.

A passionate educator, wine lover, judge, writer, and grape grower/farmer, Rhys has worked in the wine industry since he was a teenager, back in Australia. His interest in food and wine really peaked by travelling through Europe and then a summer spent immersed in food, wine and language in the South of France with Alishan

Rhys and Alishan moved to the Okanagan in 1999 to pursue the food and wine culture. In 2003 Rhys and Alishan started a catering company and Okanagan Grocery Artisan Breads, and Rhys started his Wine Plus+ business doing wine education, consulting, writing and judging. Rhys then took on the grueling Master of Wine all while running Okanagan Grocery and Wine Plus+ and with two baby daughters and one sleep deprived mother-baker in the house. Yes, they thought he was crazy.

This culminated in Rhys becoming Canada’s youngest Master of Wine (the wine world’s highest level of achievement) in 2010, one of only 300 in the world. Through his studies, Rhys knew every reason why they shouldn’t jump into the vineyard and winemaking dream but couldn’t help doing it anyway. Instead he used his training to design and plant the 4 acre Mulberry Tree Vineyard at the property Rhys and Alishan purchased in Cawston in 2008.

 

Rhys looks after the vineyard, farming it organically and sustainably, to produce intensely flavoured grapes from the calcium carbonate rich soils. Having studied the world of wine he brings a global perspective to the project and an understanding of the world’s wine regions and wine styles. He continues to run his Wine Plus+ business including a wine school, consultancy, writing for a number of publications and judging wine competitions around the world.

There is no category for master of fishing.

Little Farm Winery is the small hands-on operation of Rhys Pender MW and Alishan Driediger. It started with a passion for wine and developed into growing and producing Chardonnay and Riesling from their Mulberry Tree Vineyard at their home in Cawston, BC in the beautiful Similkameen Valley. The goal was always to make wines with minimal manipulation and intervention that really captured the vineyard site and the growing season. The vines were planted in 2009 on the calcium carbonate rich soil and braving the unforgiving Similkameen sun and wind. The first wines were made in 2011. In 2012 a dry Rosé was added to the lineup. Little Farm Winery will never be big and will always focus on making small batches of single-vineyard wine that reflect each site’s unique characteristics. The goal is to make interesting, character natural wines and look after their  little farm.

Kamloops Wine Trail – Opens this weekend

Officially opening today, the Kamloops Wine Trail showcases BC’s newest wine experience with four unique and diverse wineries pioneering a new wine region in the Kamloops Thompson Valley area of British Columbia. Situated along the picturesque banks of the North and South Thompson Rivers, the Kamloops Wine Trail connects Harper’s Trail, Monte Creek Ranch, Privato, and Sagewood wineries.

On Saturday, June 27th, from 11:00am to 5:00pm, the Kamloops Wine Trail will celebrate our launch with an open house at each of the wineries. Joe is the son of founders Mick and Pam Luckhurst. As such, he’s been handed a lot of responsibility.

Keep the fans of Road 13 happy and at the same time look for new ways to move the winery forward.

Joe has  started planning the future with winemaker JM Bouchard and the future looks bright.

The first two releases we talk about are their new Marsanne and Roussanne offerings.

This isn’t just two more varietals for the market. These releases represent, in part, the possible future identity for the label.

Rhone varietals. Grown in BC.

They’re on to something because The Roussanne is spectacular.

And the GSM they’ve also released  is very much what you could expect in The Rhone!

GSM is a fine blend of Grenache.Syrah.Movedre

Joe and JM believe that this is what Road 13 can do best down the road.

It’s going to be fun to watch and taste the growth.

And just when Joe thought the interview was done..I decided to ask the question..What the heck is going on with the name Golden Mile?

They gave it up the name  in 2009 and became Road 13.  SIX years later.. it feels like there’s still no serious push to establish that sub appellation.

Daenna van Mulligen  returns from multiple wine tours around the world..and steps into her other persona as – The Wine Diva.

One of her journeys took her to a specific region of Portugal, The Douro Valley  and a very famous Port House  Fonseca !  http://www.fonseca.pt/

 

Vintage Port  runs like a continuous thread through Fonseca’s history.  Since the legendary 1840, the first Vintage Port made under the Fonseca name, the firm has produced a steady stream of magnificent wines, including such landmark vintages as 1927, 1948, 1977 and 1994, all of them 100-point wines.  These, among many others, have firmly established Fonseca as one of the finest ‘first growth’ Vintage Port producers.  The 2011 Has been declared the best in perhaps 30 years.

How long has Fonseca been making wine?  Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo 10 weeks after they first opened their doors.

Speaking of Portugal..Domingos Soares Franco is a larger than life winemaker from Jose Maria da Fonseca.. They are based in the  Setubal Peninsula, the  Portuguese wine region immediately south and east of Lisbon, across the Tejo estuary

They also are celebrating 200 years of business.

They first  created Moscatel of Setubal in 1849 and the popular Periquita Brand in 1850.

Domingos Soares Franco, winemaker and vice president, is the sixth generation of the family that runs the José Maria da Fonseca.
He studied in Davis, California and began working at José Maria da Fonseca in the 80s Since then, it has introduced numerous changes in the wines produced by this company, becoming one of the most innovative winemakers of the new generation in Portugal.

… and finally- over a year ago I had the joy of  touring New Zealand and its wineries. One of the destinations was Hawkes Bay and one of the wineries was Sileni Estates and Grant Edmonds, Chief Winemaker

Grant has over 20 years experience in the New Zealand wine industry, including the position of Chief Winemaker for the Villa Maria Group and Esk Valley Estates.
Grant is passionate about Merlot, an affair beginning at Esk Valley Estates and further fuelled by working the vintage at Chateau Pavie in St Emillon in 1990.  This spurred Grant on to develop his own label Redmetal in 1996 and to join Graeme Avery to create Sileni Estates from the ground up in 1997.

Grants takes us through

Sauvignon Blanc Cellar and the Sileni Cellar  Pinot Noir. Two of their most popular releases.

Also comments on Syrah &  Merlot in the region plus new planting of Spanish and Italian varietals!

Grant also weights in on what the world wants now from their Marlborough Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay in Hawkes Bay and how NZ is doing around the World!

(one of the few regions that’s grown consistently over the past 5 years)

Daenna van Mulligen/The Wine Diva has been on the road from most of May and June.

Two of the wine regions she visited were Spain and Chablis.

Daenna headed for the South of Spain and an association of wineries called The Grandes Pagos de Espana.

Its goal, to preserve the rich culture of estate-made wine in Spain and in many instances, unique Spanish grape varieties.

This group has dedicated itself to discovering and replanting many of the old original vineyards of Spain.  These vines are dry farmed..no water..which will serve them well given the changing environment.. Daenna came back very excited about the possibilities of this group..their biggest hurdle is to let the World their story.

One story  that stood out for Daenna was Valdespino.

“The origins of the Bodega Valdespino date back to 1264 A.D. The first member of the Valdespino family to cultivate and age Sherry wines was Don Alfonso Valdespino, one of 24 Christian Knights who fought for King Alonso to re-conquer the City of Jerez from the Moors.

As a reward for a successful battle, the King rewarded the Knights, by giving them land in the City of Jerez.

Valdespino also produces Fino Inocente, the only Sherry wine whose grapes are harvested from only one vineyard, the Macharnudo Estate. It is also unique in that it is the only Sherry wine fermented in oak barrels, being now the norm to ferment in stainless steel tanks.

And then to France and Chablis.  Chablis the region –part of Burgundy – and a star in its own right.

It’s their version of chardonnay..whether its Petite Chablis, premier cru etc.

Daenna is working on an  in-depth look into Chablis – the wines, vineyards, soils, expositions and, of course, foods.

Xavier Penas – Gran Clos (Priorat)

 Priorat is a small but dynamic region in the North East of Spain.

Priorat is famed for its startling views, pure air and azure skies. It has an ancient history stretching back to the Phonecians.
Vines, like people, often reach their peak in the face of adversity. This highly limited cuvée is hand made from 100-year-old vines that suffer daily to survive in dense slate soils on steep hillsides. Their fruit offers a unique mineral complexity that could come from no other place on earth and has done so since Carthusian monks first planted vines in Priorat in the 12th century (Priorat is the Catalan word for ‘priory’).

Valerie Lelong has one of the best jobs in wine..she’s the face and voice for the Rose’ winemakers of Provence.   all 600 of them.

Benziger Family Winery, founded more than 30 years ago by a pioneering Sonoma Valley wine family who helped bring green farming practices into the mainstream, is being sold to one of the world’s largest producers of low-priced wines.

The Wine Group, the world’s third-largest wine company with such budget brands as Franzia, Almaden and Corbett Canyon, announced Monday it has purchased the winery in Glen Ellen and its nearby sister winery, Imagery.

Financial terms were not disclosed, though industry estimates ranged from less than $90 million to slightly more than $100 million.

It is the second blockbuster deal in two decades for the Benziger family, which built its first wine brand, Glen Ellen, into the largest wine label in Sonoma County before selling it in 1993 to Heublein for an estimated $80 million.

Mike Benziger, founder and chief executive officer of his family winery, said The Wine Group will continue the green farming tradition that has been the calling card of the winery he founded with his late father in 1980.

Here’s an on site interview with Mike’s brother Chris, who is responsible for the farming of this iconic property.

9th Annual Spot Prawn Festival/Vancouver

 It’s one of the best success stories anywhere.

9 years ago Chef Robert Clark was mad as hell and wasn’t going to take it anymore.

All he wanted to do was serve local Spot Prawns at C Restaurant.

None of the fishing fleet would sell him their prawns. That’s because they could get top dollar in Japan.

Robert got together with Steve Johansson and his vessel Organic Ocean and off they went..

Word got around very quickly that fresh prawns could be bought – live – off the False Creek Docks across from Granville market.

Everything took off from that moment.

FIVE-SPICE  STEAK

This m1ght smoke up the k1 tchen, but it is worth  1   t. The five-sp1ce powder IS fused to the steak w1th the blistering heat of the pan, mok1 ng for a raspy, s1zzling crust It is finished w1th a qu1ck, flavorsome sauce of herbs, chi es, and r1ce vinegar, rounded  out biJ toasted sesame oil. The onoint1ng works like a late – addition mannode, not onliJ dressing the

meat but aslo seem1ng to keep 1t 1ncred1 bilJ soft and tender.

Serves4 to 6

1 bone-in rib steak,

2 inches (5 em) thick, weighing approximately

1Y:i pounds (680 g)

1Y:i teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder

1 teaspoon medium-grain kosher salt

Y:i teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil

1 clove garlic, minced

1-inch (2.5 em) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and minced

1 smallred chile, stemmed, seeded, and minced

1 tablespoon unseasoned rice vinegar

2 teaspoons tamari

1 teaspoon natural cane or Light brown sugar

3 green onions, white and

Light green parts  only, minced

2 Large handfuls of cilantro, Leaves and tender stems, chopped

Season the steak allover w1th the five-sp1ce powder, salt, and pepper. Dab on the sesame  o1lw1th a brush.

Place a large cost-iron pan over med1um-h1gh heat. Once the pan

IS good and hot,lo y 1n the steak. Let 1 t coo k, undisturbed,for 2 to

3 m1nutes, then check for even color and move the steak around

1f necessorlJ. Keep shuffling untilwellbrowned, 2 to 3 minutes more. Flip the steak, and continue to cook unt1 lthe second s1de IS equolliJ charred  and cooked  to your lik1ng. (An Instant-read thermometer 1nserted in the thickest por t,without touc hing bone,should read 120’F [50’C] for med1 um-rore, and w1lltoke opprox1 moteliJ 3 to 5 m1 nutes alter fl1pp1ng to the second s1de.) Set the steak aside and reduc e the heat to medium-low.

Add the garlic, g1nger, and ch1le to the skillet and cook,st1rr1ng, for 1 m1nute. Stir together the r1ce v1negor, tomori, and sugar, then pour 1t 1nto the pan, scrop1ng u p oniJ browned bits and

ollow1ng the liqu1 ds to reduce, about 1 m1 nute. Scrape the sauce

1nto a smallbowlw1th half the green on1 ons and half the Cilantro.

Present the steak whole at the tabel , or slice across the gmn and arrange on a plotter. W1th e1ther, pour some of the sauce over the meat and shower w1 th the reserved green onion and Cilantro. Offer the rest of the sauc e alongside.

Widely regarded as the “Godfather of California Zinfandel,” Ravenswood Founding Winemaker Joel Peterson has been named to the 2011 Vintners Hall of Fame by The Culinary Institute of America (CIA).  The induction recognizes  Joel’s significant contributions to the California wine industry and in particular, his unswerving devotion to and protection of California’s old-vine Zinfandel vineyards—a living testament to the state’s earliest winegrowing history.

 

 

Joel Peterson is one of just three contemporary California vintners to be inducted into the 2011 Vintners Hall of Fame!

Following an apprenticeship with Joseph Swan—one of California’s outstanding craftsman of Zinfandel—Peterson founded Ravenswood in 1976 with $4,000, no vineyards and no winery.  His vision from the start was to craft high-quality, complex and spirited Zinfandels that would express the unique character of their specific vineyards.

A key to his success was seeking out vineyards chosen for their location, age, yield and unique flavor characteristics.  By forging collaborative relationships early on with the grower-owners of these exceptional sites (some more than 100 years old), Joel was able to build a distinctive portfolio of single vineyard-designated Ravenswood Zinfandels that together illustrated how well the grape reflects its precise locale.  Since many of these vineyards are also among the oldest in California, Peterson’s wines helped to preserve them.

Joel  has also worked tirelessly on behalf of the industry as a whole to build consumer awareness and appreciation for Zinfandel as California’s most historic and authentic wine grape.

More than 30 years following his first harvest, Peterson continues his Zinfandel quest.  He is currently spearheading a project with fellow Zinfandel winemakers and ZAP called the Zinfandel Heritage Blends Project.  The program aims to reestablish California’s most unique and original wine, the Mixed Black Field Blend.  Primarily a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cariganne and Alicante Bousche (among many others), Joel believes strongly that the Mixed Black Field Blend was the most interesting and important wine that California made before Prohibition.  As Joel says, it was truly the “once and future wine of California.”

Along with fellow winemakers and the University of California at Davis, Joel is also currently spearheading the Heritage Vineyard Project, which was established to preserve, investigate, propagate and distribute clonal selections from a wide range of California ancient heritage Zinfandel vineyards.

 and finally… Sunday brings the hugely popular Annual Spot Prawn Festival at the fishing docks in Kitsilano.

Starting around 10:30/11am

Chef Robert Clark is a co-founder of this event and really was the driving force behind reclaiming our Prawn Fishery.

Years ago Robert discovered that not only were we shipping our local prawns to  Asia, he couldn’t even BUY them for his restaurant.

So off he went to find Steve Johansen and his vessel Organic Ocean. The two of them created their own fishery and the rest is a wonderfully successful story.

Summerhill is one of the iconic family owned wineries in the Okanagan.

Ezra is proud to carry on the family legacy at Summerhill Pyramid Winery. Since the Cipes family moved from New York to Kelowna when Ezra was five, he has grown up with the wine industry around him, and learned it by osmosis.
After attending public school in Kelowna, Cipes embarked on a musical path, attending music college at Vancouver Community College.  Ezra felt the call back to the vineyard. Home on the family farm, Cipes initiated a half acre permaculture garden, selling vegetables and herbs to Summerhill’s onsite Sunset Bistro. After reconnecting with the winery and the land, Cipes knew he needed to assume a greater role at the winery.
At Summerhill Pyramid Winery, Ezra Cipes is responsible for day to day operations, marketing, and leadership. He has completed courses in vineyard management and in permaculture design.
Summerhill is committed to producing 100% organic wine, and has received Demeter Biodynamic certification for their  Kelowna vineyard in 2012. Certified organic status was achieved in the  cellar in 2007, allowing them  to display the Canadian certified organic logo on their bottles, ensuring that a level of quality and purity can be expected by the consumer.

BENCH 1775 Winery is  so lucky to have  Valeria Tait as General Manager.
Not only is she a GM, she’s also one of the most in demand viticulturists in BC.
Val oversees the BENCH 1775 vineyards, winery operations, and guest experience. With wineries like Poplar Grove, Painted Rock and Mission Hill on her resume, Val brings a wealth of viticulture and winery experience to BENCH 1775.
And it was love at first sight for Val as well:  “It’s so beautiful here. What really caught my imagination was this mind-blowing property with a spectacular deck and fantastic beach.”
BENCH 1775 currently produces approximately 7,000 cases of table wine per year, and Val has set her sights on expanding and invigorating the existing vineyard program. BC Wine Laws with lawyer Mark Hicken
 What a mess.
April 1st brings new wine laws that will affect everyone.
Wine stores, wineries, restaurants and you,  the wine buyer.
From a legal standpoint, the most knowledgeable person I could ask to guest was Lawyer Mark Hicken from Vintage Law Group.
He’s been following the story for  years now. Understands the players and the dynamics.

Mark says an $8 bottle may cost between $7.65 and $9.19 with the new wholesale pricing model.
According to Mark’s  number crunching, a $10 bottle may retail between $9.75 and $11.75 shortly. A bottle worth $15 now could retail anywhere between its current price to $18. A $20 bottle now may cost either the same or up $24.
Mark will try and make sense of this mess and I’ll try not to foul the air with expletives!!

In a place so small..i don’t think it’s on any maps..Dunworly and Dunworly Beach.
There we meet our host at Dunworly Cottages… Gilly Murphy..who welcomes us and shows us our cottage. It was a barn built LONG AGO!
We do a quick interview about the area and Ireland..then without pause Gilly grabs her bags and is off to visit her daughter in  India. It was going to be that kind of trip.
Gilly does pop up dinners in her home – overlooking the Atlantic Ocean – and supplies organic vegetables to THE BEST  local restaurants.

 The closest town to our cottage was Clonakilty..51 km south of Cork,  on the South
West Coast of County Cork.
The first sign that caught our eye was Molly’s Wine Bar and inside we found just the perfect person to talk about wine in Ireland  Ellen McGailey who was running the place when we got there.

Because I knew Ireland was a well established  home for beer and whiskey,  I needed to know wines place in every day Irish social life.

Then she introduced me to Canadian Allison Roberts, who hails originally from Toronto.
She arrived with her musician husband via Australia.
Allison had been working with chocolate since she was a kid..most of us do get covered in chocolate as tiny little babies but she never lost interest and has just opened Clonakilty Chocolate to serious acclaim in the area.

 Even though the address says Ring Village..I drove this part of the coast a dozen times..never really saw a village..a gathering of various houses yes but a village..not so much.
Crumbling ancient buildings and stone walls – yup!
A strong sense of history on this part of the road..you can see what attracted people even 3-500 years ago.
And there, surrounded by the ocean and a small fishing fleet stands Deasy’s.
It came highly recommended by the locals.
 The trick was getting there early enough for one of 6 parking spots just off the highway (its on a nasty little corner) and gets busy very quickly.
The reason – the amazing cooking talents of Caitlin Ruth – The Chef.
Originally from the USA, she married an Irishman and found her way back to the homeland from Belgium. 
What a fine fine chef she is..
The menu features – as expected – many different fish, in many exceptional dishes. Paired with a very smart wine list.
It used to be an old pub..so it still has that comfortable pub feel but the windows give everyone a brilliant look at the ocean just across the highway.
Highly recommended destination. Memorable meals. Great hang!! Wicked parking.

Then we’re off to Dublin..some 3-4 hours North.  Taking the train from Cork is a LOT more fun than driving..
It’s fair to say we stumbled onto a small corner lunch place called Oxmantown..where owner Conor Higgins was holding court.

Oxmantown? At the time of the Norman invasion into Ireland, the Vikings, or Ostmen (East-men), as they called themselves were exiled to the north of the River Liffey where they founded the hamlet ofAustmanna-tún, later corrupted to Oxmantown. The district remained distinct from Dublin city for many centuries. Oxmantown celebrates this cultural distinction, its location in the heart of the homestead of the Ostmen.
Conor Higgins is the chef/owner at Oxmantown. Ex of Junior’s and l’Gueuleton – two of Dublin’s most lauded and successful eateries of the past decade – his provenance is distinguished. Applying classic culinary techniques to the art of sandwich making, with Oxmantown, Conor brings something unique to Dublin’s burgeoning café scene.

 The line-up was all the way to the door and out..and a rather bizarre mix of lawyers and judges from the law courts  and farmers from the market around the corner.
You could tell at a glance that this place was very popular and as soon as we stepped inside..you knew they were on to something..
Great small menu..mostly well made and very  inventive sandwiches, salads etc.
Out came the microphone and recorder and in between orders etc, Conner gave us the story.. (everyone here has a story)

 Then it’s a brisk 15 minute walk through Temple Bar (former site of original Viking settlement)..to Fleet Street and  the home of one of Dublin’s historic pubs..The Palace Bar, established 1823.
The Aherne family bought the Palace in 1946..and have run it every since.
Its right around the corner from the Irish Times newspaper offices..thus many many columns have been written in its corners and nooks.

I don’t think you can do a food and beverage tour of Ireland and not talk about Irish Whiskey.
Its fallen on some hard times, given the economy, but its making a wonderful comeback today.
I wanted to know from Michael..how their whiskey business made its comeback and why its so different from their Scottish neighbours.
We also talk trends..in craft brewing sand cider making.
Michael gives us a brief history of The Palace Bar, which was  the first bar to bring back the tradition of making in house whiskey.

Catherine Cleary – Food journalist for the Irish Times. Author of the forthcoming book “The Sheridan Brothers Guide to Cheese”

 Now THIS..is a wonderful sit down.  I just knew that once I started the verbal ball rolling..Darina and Denis would take over and I could sit back and enjoy the dialogue. What they give us is a great overview of Irelands food scene which is getting better and better.
 Then there’s Ray Blackwell..who manages the famous bar and folk club de barras. And his tales of Noel Redding..who made de Barras his home club after his Jimi Hendrix days.
 We visit L Mulligan Grocer..a must see food and beer destination in Dublin..
Adam Killbain, the beer specialist and Seaneen Sullivan, who oversees the restaurant and bar talk about their clientele and about Stonybatter, the historic area they work in.
 
And finally John McKenna..famous Irish whiskey and food leader. He and his wife Sally run McKenna’s Guides.
