Mulligan Stew July 15th 2023- The Summer Stews… The Final Tours

hello

With thanks to Pete Townshend and The Who – lyric from My Generation 1966
Elton John.
The Eagles.
Aerosmith.
Foreigner.
All announcing the final tour of their careers.
Elton finished an epic final tour Saturday in Stockholm.
910 million. In ticket sales.
But before you wave Bub Bye to music heroes of the 70’s and 80’s,  just know there are others out there still moving forward.
Sting. Clapton. U2. Steely Dan. Fleetwood Mac,  McCartney and Ringo. Dylan. Joni.  Neil,  and The Rolling Stones.
Leading the charge and flying the flag is 73-year-old Bruce Springsteen.
Bruce is on tour and the other night at the end of a 3-hour set in London’s Hyde Park he told the 63,000 fans about the band he first played with when he was 15.
“Death is like you’re standing on the railway tracks with an oncoming train bearing down on you, but it brings a clarity of thought. It pushes you to seize the day, to savour, with urgency, the time and the people you have left”. And then he sang his final song Last Man Standinga song about the passions of youth, the time in your life when “it’s all hellos” before they are outnumbered by “hard goodbyes”

Instead of trying desperately to be 25, as a much older version of himself, he sings about the years in between. What happened to the listener, the song and himself? Poignant, is a shared deep-felt emotion that will stay with many forever.
Having lived my life with their joyous noise I look forward to celebrating…
The Music – The Songs – The Memories with these songs and how the original lyrics have taken on new meaning. Especially Joni’s.
Bruce – Last Man Standing “When all our summers have come to an end /I’ll see you in my dreams”
Paul – The End of The End
Elton – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Chef Kristian Eligh – Marilena Café and Raw Bar.  Victoria

Chef Kristian Eligh

It felt like the longest opening of a new restaurant I’ve seen in many years.

3-4 years ago I knew that Kristian and his family were moving back to Victoria with a plan to create a singular restaurant.

Then came years of COVID and post Covid.

Finally the day has arrived and Marilena Café and Raw Bar  was just launched.

Kristian is a chefs chef.

New Vancouver Island restaurant Marilena to open in Victoria, BC on June 28 | Eat North

Kristian is a chef’s chef.

From Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry, to culinary director of Hawksworth Restaurant and now

Top Table Group Executive Chef.

The Top Table Group includes Blue Water Café, Eliza, Cin Cin, Araxi, Il Caminetto, Bar Oso.  Quite a line up and it doesn’t include their two New York City restaurants.

Marilena is two rooms in one. They’ve been described as “pockets of ambience”.

The Raw Bar, led by Chef Clark Park. The Café is the turf of one of the best managers Aaron Matsuzaki.

New Vancouver Island restaurant Marilena to open in Victoria, BC on June 28 | Eat North

The wine directory is large. It’s overseen by the brilliant Shane Taylor.

This is a destination, my friends…

Go to www.marilenacafe.com and check out the dazzling menu and wine list.

The café is a blend of Japanese-inspired small plates, Italian salads and large sharing plates of whole fish, lobster and  48 hr Beef Shortrib.

Cocktails on tap and a list of variables called lively, adventurous and sophisticated.

Pouring select Vancouver Island Wines. One from Basque Country and Aquilini   Cab/Merlot Family Blend from Red Mountain.

Marilena is now open. It was well worth the wait.

EP 263 | Festival Time in Courtney. Also from 2019 two legends David Hood (Muscle Shoals) and Leland Sklar (LA)

hello

We start this week with Doug Cox, the artistic director of the Vancouver Island Music Festival. Next weekend. July 14-16 in Courtney, BC This year the headliners are Sarah McLachlan, Rickie Lee Jones and The Bros. Landreth. Doug asked Roy Forbes to return to his BIM character and revisit the tracks from his Thistles Album.

Two legends are appearing. . Dave Alvin and Jimmy Dale Gilmore with The Guilty Ones. Here’s Doug Cox with backgrounds on all those artists and more events and artists. NEXT WEEK – The Artistic Directors of Folk Festivals in Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Canmore.  Also Terry Wickham reveals his lineup for Edmonton Folk Fest

The second guests on our podcast are two bass playing legends – David Hood (Muscle Shoals ) and Leland Sklar. In 2019, at the very same Vancouver Island Music Festival two of the most famous bass players in popular music met for the very first time.

David Hood – from Muscle Shoals Alabama finally met Leland Sklar from Los Angeles. David Hood was part of the legendary studio musicians at FAME and Muscle Shoals Studios who shaped some of the most famous hits ever made. For Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones, and The Staple Singers. In LA, Leland Sklar has recorded over 2000 albums for artists including Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt and many more.

They hold the unique distinction of being “makers of memories” through the music they helped to create. Great bass players are the glue that holds the band together. What makes bass players special? Memorable bass tracks? Did they follow each other’s careers? The key to surviving and thriving for all those sessions, all those artists and those albums? Honoured to finally meet these artists.

Enjoy

July 8th, 2023 Michael Bartier – Tasting The BB portfolio and Rowan Stewart Cellared Chardonnay from Quails Gate

hello

Michael Bartier – Tasting The Brothers  classic portfolio and Rowan Stewart Cellared Chardonnay from QG.

THE SHOW

Michael Bartier: Bartier Brothers  – GM. Co-Owner and Chief Winemaker (South Okanagan)

(Don and Michael Bartier)

For a guy who literally fell into the wine business many years ago, he has become,  through his own drive, will and talent,  one of the very best winemakers and visionaries in Canada.

Michael learned his craft as a tradesman at Hawthorne Mountain Vineyards, Township 7 and Road 13, among others. Currently, he acts as a  consulting winemaker and by his leadership, in and out of the bottle, he makes them even  better wineries.

Michael has been on Tasting Room Radio for many years now. He brings smarts, compassion and no BS.

Perhaps once a year we exchange questions and answers, insights and food fights.

This time we’re  talking about  the new releases of his classic wines,  and big things like Wieners and Wine Wednesdays, Burgers and Blues, and Bubbles and Brunch.

Plus one really fascinating addition to his resume. Partnering with Boutinot , the biggest negotiant in French winemaking. They love the wines that Michael makes and its now finding its way to many other countries in the wine world.

The wine is called Project B.  We have a very interesting chat about those wines and Michaels role in the process.

Rowan Stewart – Quails Gate Winemaker: New Developments

Even though Rowan’s title suggests new developments, he’s really with us this week to take us through cellaring Chardonnay in the Okanagan Valley.

Its always a very interesting experience when new Okanagan white wines are tasted  next to their previous vintages. The tasting takes on a  more serious tone when the wine being tasted is Quails Gate Chardonnay.

Thats because they have gained wine fame with their portfolio of cool climate Chardonnays.

Quails’ Gate are true wine pioneers in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia with more than sixty years of experience in viticulture. The Stewart family settled in the area in 1908. Five decades later, Dick Stewart started to grow grapes in 1961. The winery, Quails’ Gate was founded in 1989. Over the next two decades, the entire family became involved in making the company one of the leading producers of premium BC VQA wines.

Rowan is  the latest Stewart to commit to the family business.

Quails' Gate

Rowan Stewart

The vineyard and the climate are unique: the Okanagan experiences cooler temperatures yet high heat and long periods of sun exposure in the Summer, which provides the ability to grow a multitude of varietals. Due to its latitudinal location, the Okanagan has, more sunlight exposure than most regions in the world. West Kelowna in particular, also sits over an extinct volcano with soil rich in volcanic rock, clay, gravel and glacial till, providing minerals that give wines depth, strength and character.  Vessel Liquor,  Victoria.

Currently Quails Gate is doing a program of specialty tasting  for wine fans and right now it’s Chardonnay. The event is called  Right Place, Right Time.  Well made chardonnays age beautifully. Quails Gate are exploring how their chardonnays  will age. You can as well.

Changing in the bottle from freshness on the nose and palate to aged characteristics like spice and complexity.

Lots to talk about. Which is why Rowan and Quails Gate are guesting on the last two segments.

Here are the wines we tasted.

EP 262 | The final 2 interviews with The Last DJ, Red Robinson

hello

Red Robinson was the first announcer to play rock music on the radio in Canada. He was 16 years old.

Imagine the lives he influenced. Loved by teens. Hated and hounded by parents and adults.

Red made no distinction between black and white artists:  he just played the hits.

That drive and determination took him all the way to induction into the Rock Hall of Fame.

I’m told I did the last interviews with Red Robinson.

He was in a retirement home in Vancouver and living with his memories.

Red was directly responsible for the turning point in my career. He phoned me at CKCK in  Regina and asked “Would you like to come home.? Back to the West Coast?

One of the happiest moments in my life.

We became friends and co-workers.

His timing was impeccable.  He was the right guy. In the right place. At the right time

He got to play and then meet and interview

Bill Haley

Carl Perkins

Johnny Cash

Little Richard

Jackie Wilson

Fats Domino

Chuck Berry

And

The Beatles.

He Introduced The Beatles at their Vancouver Concert.

Started the careers of many many announcers. Me for one.

Changed the lives of millions of teens during the late ’50s and 60’s.

I have a number of interviews with Red…

The last two were Zoom interviews. The first didn’t go well. Red couldn’t hear the questions but the second and last in 2022 went much better.

This Podcast is both of those Zoom interviews back to back. The first was in March 2022 and the second October 2022.

I hope it tells some of the story of his life, the music he played, the lives he changed and his place in Canadian radio.

Red died on April 1, 2023.  He was 86

Canada Day July 1st, 2023 Another “walk in the neighborhood”

hello

For over 17 years we’ve had a feature on TRR called A walk in the neighbourhood.

We’ve made some fine friends along the way.

The “neighbourhood“ for Tasting Room Radio  are the segment sponsors of this weekly salute to the  craft of winemaking and culinary arts.

When we started the show we vowed  “if we are committed to talking  about someone for 52 weeks,  we better like them  and  admire what they do or it  just doesn’t work!”

In one hour, we’ll  talk about the wines they’ve released, the awards they’ve won and their plans  for the Summer and Fall.  Fresh new talk friends.

This year in the  neighborhood are:

Hillside Winery (Naramata)

Unsworth Vineyards (Cowichan – Vancouver island)

Moon Curser (Osoyoos)

Mt Boucherie  (West Kelowna)

Okanagan Wine Festivals (West Kelowna)

HILLSIDE ESTATE WINERY

GM and Winemaker Kathy Malone and Chef Evan Robertson

Kathy Malone

Kathy delightfully takes us through the new Hillside releases.

The 2022 Gewürztraminer, 2022 Pinot Gris and a wine club exclusive Below the Road Rose. Also the 2020 Pinot Noir,  2020 Merlot, 2018 Dickinson (single vineyard) Merlot.

They’re prepping for a Best of the Bench Dinner event July 18th

In our interview Chef Evan pairs each wine with items from his new menu at The Bistro at Hillside. It is….a beautiful thing!!

UNSWORTH VINEYARDS

To quote Barney Bentall  “putting this band together is like a goat rodeo”.

In our day to day life in Mill Bay our real neighbours are the Cowichan Wineries and the closest in heart and mind  is Unsworth. We drive by every morning on our way for a Cobble Hill walk.

Representing Unsworth in our  neighbourhood special are:

Dan Wright -Winemaker,   Felix Egerer – Viticulturist,  Chef Dan Bain – Restaurant at Unsworth, Karen Newington – Hospitality and Tasting Room Manager.

“The Dans” bring really good food and wine pairings. Dan Bain has a new menu to walk us through as well.

Dan Wright and Felix take us through new releases and their growing season and a new vineyard we should all keep an eye on.

Dan Wright

2022 Pinot Gris, 2022 Rose, Charme de l’ile and CDL Rose,  a mention of the coming  2018 Cuvee de l’ile and a 2022 Saison Vineyard Pinot Noir.

I heard someone mention Mags.

Chef likes the new garden in place. Especially the tomatoes for their local legendary pizza on the patio.

(Chef Dan Bain)

Karen brings us tasting room hours, new summer music every Sunday, August wine passport and everyone had a comments about those new vineyards,  with the promise of increased availability of pinot noir and chardonnay. Dan Wright and I both swooned over the possibilities of the new Charmat Tank.

Here’s a local heads up!  If you’re in the Cowichan on a Monday or Tuesday check out the pizza on the patio between 12 noon and 6pm.  It’s just such a good for the soul  experience.

All-in-all the place is buzzing. Reservations highly rcommended.

Moon Curser Vineyards

The 2019 Best Small Winery in Canada. (just thought I’d throw that in there)

A true family winery  Beata and Chris Tolley created Moon Curser 20 years ago and made it  one of the most interesting wineries in the Okanagan.

Moon Curser Vineyards uses unconventional grapes | Georgia Straight Vancouver's News & Entertainment Weekly

Best of all, their wines reflect their character. Upbeat, strong and welcoming. Such great people.

On the Osoyoos East Bench, they grow and make an amazing range of singular wines. A portfolio measured in heartbeats.

2022 Heist Rose (Syrah driven. Neutral oak presents texture – in a rose)

2022 Dolcetto (loaded with notes of pomegranate and dark berries.  Can be cellared to 2030)

2021 Syrah  (Dark rich fruit. Black Current. Floral notes and juicy)

2021 Contraband Syrah  (dark ripe cherry with  earthy notes,  stewed berries, anise, black pepper. Cellar to 2033)

2021 Malbec  (single vineyard from east bench, spice, dark fruit, medium to full, mint, fig.  Cellar to 2030)

We also talked Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris and several others.

Highly recommend checking out their wine clubs. Members get first dibs on hard to find releases.

Fall releases include 2019 Tannat, 2021 Petit Verdot.

Mt Boucherie Estate Winery

Jeff Hundertmark came to the Okanagan from Niagara. That’s where we first met. After we had talked wine he asked about BC and how the Okanagan was doing. I raved about the land, the wines and  the people. A year later he and his love Kimberly  announced that they  were heading West.  Both  have become a strong part of their new home., the Okanagan.

Jeff worked jobs at several wineries until he found his destiny at Mt Boucherie in West Kelowna.

Jeff Hundertmark

Family owned, with a lot of acres planted to vines –  a LOT.

So much fruit,  that in advance of chatting with Jeff he kindly sent a spread sheet outlining talking points.

We talked about two of his three labels – Mt Boucherie and Modest Wines. Next time we’ll talk Rust Wine Co.

Interesting point. Even though Jeff has huge amounts of juice at his disposal, his approach reminds me of Garigiste!

Attention to detail. In everything he does.

Best of all, Jeff is matched step for step by the winery restaurant The Modest Butcher. (Dining with Reckless Abandon)

A partial list of everything we talked about:

Mt Boucherie

2018/2019/2020  Summit.  Classic Bordeaux Blend. Merlot driven but with increasing amounts of Malbec.

2020 Contessa – Top of the line release. Merlot/Syrah/Malbec. Only made in great growing years. Large format available.

2021 OV Semillon/2021 OV Chard/2021 Reserve Chard.

Modest Wines:

2022 Modest Graves Robber (Sem/Sauv Blanc)

2022 Modest Les Cinq Sink (merlot, Cab, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec. Saignee method using all 5 Bordeaux reds)

2022 Modest Wines Rose. ( Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Gew. All grown together. A true Field Blend)

www.mtboucherie.com

Okanagan Wine Festivals   Kimberly Hundertmark.  GM

Kimberly brought her Niagara smarts to the Okanagan and slowly moved through the ranks until she too found her destiny.

(Kimberly Hundertmark)

As GM on the Okanagan Wine Fests. Kimberly immediately started revising the focus and formats and a noticeable uptick showed itself.

Kimberly gives us the immediate schedule of events between now and Fall Wine Fest (Oct 27-31 and Nov 1-5)

Three of the highlights include Silver Star Wine Fest and Rock the Lake Music Fest plus the Ambleside Music Festival.

Mulligan Stew July1st 2023 – Remembering The original rock DJ Red Robinson (Hall of Fame) and Canadian donors in Texas

hello

Red Robinson died this year.  A sell-out crowd of fans and many friends filled The Commodore Ballroom to remember the man who singlehandedly brought rock and roll to Canadian airwaves. Millions of listeners truly loved him in and around Vancouver and  Red was directly responsible for the first wild formative years of rock on radio North of the Border.
Red also introduced black artists to a generation who had never heard of them.
Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Red was directing traffic at the Rock Crossroads.
He was recognized for his place in music history by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. (also called and hired me on the prairies and brought me back to Vancouver. Red changed my life.)
In the last two years of Red’s life, I decided to ask my friend to sit down on Zoom and allow me to ask questions about the artists he met and became friends with and the lives he changed in his audience.
Just think about it …Red got to interview and introduce
  • Elvis Presley
  • Roy Orbison
  • Fats Domino

  • Everly Brothers
  • Chuck Berry
  • Johnny Cash
  • Bill Haley
  • Buddy Holly
  • Ray Charles

  • James Brown
  • The Beatles
I interviewed him twice… March 2022 and October 2022.
I felt the first one was not his or my best and thus the follow-up.
Those were the last two interviews he did.
That’s Hour Two of The Stew – Hour One as donor-driven suggestions and requests. Connect Canadian artists who toured and recorded in the USA and American artists who chose to play live and record in Canada.  Plus we play the best of us

EP 261 | Bruce Allen: The state of todays music business, his roster and another birthday!

hello

On the occasion of Bruce Allen’s birthday, I thought I’d sit down for an early morning Zoom call.

Bruce has a roster of talent that plays the World’s stages, so you can find him at 8 am just finishing a call to South Africa.

He’s a full-speed guy. Never outworked,  no matter what the project.

In over 50 years Bruce has become one of the best artist managers in the entire music business.  Bruce Allen Talent.

His roster now includes legend Anne Murray, Michael Bublé (there’s a story), Jann Arden, mega-producer Bob Rock and his first band in a while The Offspring.

In the 23 minutes that I have his attention, Bruce tells tales about

Bryan Adams – his place today

Michael Bublé – we trade Bublé stories. Love it

June 24th, 2023: Wine of the year! Graham Pierce, Ned Bell and Lisa Ahier

hello

WINE OF THE YEAR: plus  Lisa Ahier (Sobo) Ned Bell (Seafood Fest) Graham Pierce (Ruby Blues)

THE SHOW

I was honored to be one of the judges for the 2023 Lt. Governor Wine Awards.

500 wines and 3 days later we compared quick comments of what surprised us.

Several times a judge said “that the winning wine was a Syrah from Naramata Bench and that a majority of Syrah awarded medals came from North of McIntyre Bluffs

Traditionally the Syrah of the south Okanagan always swept the awards so the shift came as a surprise.

Was it  a single growing year, climate change effects,  a rebalancing of terroir or our own changing expectations?

We’ll talk Syrah, awards and portfolio  with Garron Elmes The President and Winemaker at Lake Breeze. Creator  of the Wine of the Year.  2020 Lake Breeze Syrah

Garron will also take us through Lake Breeze Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, 2019 Meritage.

… and we’ll have that same Syrah discussion with Graham Pierce, winemaker at Ruby Blues also on the Naramata Bench.

Graham Pierce

Graham knows very well the Syrah of the Okanagan, having been the winemaker at Summerhill, Mt Boucherie, TIME,  Kitsch, Ruby Blues and for 10 years Black Hills Estate Winery.  The man knows his Syrah. Graham will also bring tales of his  Ruby Blues Reserve Syrah, Commune Gew, Pinot Gris, Forever Young Riesling.
