September 27th, 2014 – The East End of Vancouver & Sip and Savour …
hello
We start in the Revitalized East End of Vancouver at Campagnolo Roma With JoJo, Peter and Rob Belcham. Talking success in the kitchen, the bar and East Hastings. Then to Sip and Savour this weekend in the Cowichan Valley.
We end up on Salt Spring Island at Hastings House at a Burrowing Owl Winemakers Dinner.
THE SHOW
EAST END
Campagnolo Roma is just one of many small success stories that make up the much larger success story in the East End of Vancouver.
East Hastings was one of Vancouver’s main transit hubs. Over many years it fell into disrepair and neglect.
In the last 5-10 years it’s slowly started to show signs of life and many say it began when Rob Belcham took a huge chance and opened two restaurant locations
Campagnolo on Main and Roma on Hastings at Naniamo.
This week Chef Joachim Hayward revealed his Tutto menu. Total Italian Dining.
Communal. Sharing the whole of the plates.
Peter van de Reep – Bar Manager and wine expert – will take us through pairing this amazing menu with Bomber Beer and, for my benefit, pairing with Italian wines.
In part two Rob Belcham – chef and owner – reminds yours truly how the East End came alive in the past 5 years. Bistros, pop up restaurants, and brewers all contributed to the re-growth.

COWICHAN VALLEY / SIP AND SAVOUR
The Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island has changed their annual wine festival to Sip and Savour.
Celebrating the best of their destination.
A new growing wine region, chefs who can access the very best, freshest ingredients right around them and brewers/distillers who constantly surprise the unsuspecting.
Over the next 10 days there are 50 events including this weekend one called Sip Savour Support. Music, food and wine/beer in and around music barges in Mill Bay. All to raise funds for The Canucks Autism Network. Too many events to mention so check out www.savourcowichan.com.
We talk to Merridale Cidery, Blue Grouse and Unsworth Winery.
[divider]
And we finish our show at Hastings House Salt Spring Island.
It’s another winemakers dinner with Chef Marcel Kauer.
The wines are from the iconic Burrowing Owl, South Okanagan.
Guests are Hastings House food and wine expert Milly Sinclair and then from Burrowing Owl we get the story on the pairings with Kerri Wyse McNolty, head of marketing and Sophie Laurent, Basque born now the Brand Ambassador for the label.

The event was called Vintages.

Who better to kick off the show than Host DJ Kearney..one of the best wine experts I’ve ever come across. She holds wineries and their wines accountable. @djwines
So, first up we get up to speed with DJ. Get all our little wine ducks in a row.

Mollydooker
For those of you who don’t know a Mollydooker is a left handed person/boxer. At least in Australia it is.
Its also the name of one of the most successful wineries anywhere in the World.
Its the love child of Sparky and Sarah Marquis from Adelaide/McLaren Vale.
In 1999 they became Australian Winemakers of the Year and in the USA Robert Parker commented ‘The greatest red wine values in existence’ and ‘Run, don’t walk and secure as much as you can of these wines!’ and gave their Integrity 99 points.
We found the two of them in a tasting room at 5:00am their time..which is when Sparky does his tastings.
That’s 5AM.
If you haven’t every tried their wines, especially the big reds, be prepared to make a new friend.
Check out the Mollydooker story at http://www.mollydookerwines.com/

Adam Cohen
We think this is the third time Adam has been a guest on TRR.
He leads a busy life, especially now that he’s back on the road with a really fine new release We Go Home.
The title says it all..Adam had recorded his new songs but they didn’t seem to work. Off he went to his family home in Montreal to record where he grew up.
Not just any home. His Father being Leonard Cohen, the rooms were filled with memories of childhood and maturity.
Adam and I love to talk music but we also love our wines..that is until this interview.
Adam has a new passion now – Tequila!!

As he says in the interview not just the “i’ll hate myself in the morning” Tequila we’ve all tried. But liquid gold, on a whole other level.

THE SHOW
in March of 2014 Tasting Room Radio was invited to tour New Zealand and closely examine the sustainability programs in effect.
Part One – we started in Auckland and then moved off shore to Weiheke Island\
Then off to Napier and Hawkes Bay.
Part Two – because there are so many stories in and around Hawkes Bay we started there and then found our way to Nelson on the South Island and a chance to exchange stories and history with the local Maori.
Part Three (this show) starts in Marlborough..World Famous for its Sauvignon Blanc and now Pinot Noir.
SPY VALLEY – so named because There’s a large satellite monitoring centre sharing land with the wineries.
Spy Valley are described as the epitome of New Zealand sustainable wines.
YEALANDS – You want Character, you want baby goats? How about a visit to one. Of NZ most successful organic wineries Yealands.
Named after the character owner Pete Yealands.
SERESIN –
Michael Seresin is one of those rare people who has managed to make a name for himself in two quite distinct fields: filmmaking and wine.
His first career was as a cinematographer: born in Wellington, at the foot of New Zealand’s north Island, he left New Zealand in 1966 to forge a successful career in the movies, which he continues to this day.
He’s famous for the nine films he’s made with British director Allan Parker, as well as working with Alfonso Cuaron on the third Harry Potter film, The Prisoner of Azkabhan.
Seresin began his Marlborough winery in 1992, and this estate is far from being a vanity project, or a plaything for a wealthy retiree. Seresin is a serious player in Marlborough, and quite early on he decided he wanted to go against the grain and farm organically. He’s now working with biodynamics, too, for part of his vineyard management.
BRANCOTT and STONELEIGH.Two of the biggest wineries in all of NZ and totally committed to sustainability.Sauv Blancs, Chardonneys, Pinot Noir Rose and Pinot Noir..all between $16/$20.Brancott is releasing a flight of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris at 9% alcohol.Jamie Marfell is Winemaker and Patrick Materman is Chief Winemker.
STAETELANDT – Dorien Vermaas Co-Founder
While Ruud is hands on in the winery, Dorien has had her finger on the pulse of the marketing / sales of Staete Landt Wines since the beginning. Her background as a marketing manager in larger companies and her love for wine has certainly given her the edge when it comes to understanding this intricate side of the business.
Her bright and bubbly personality are a true asset to the company. Along with Ruud, her philosophy is to produce wines of character and integrity – words that sum up her attitude to all she has done for Staete Landt Wines
Charlie Halliday – Viticulturist
As a youngster, Marlborough born Charlie earned pocket money working in the very first vineyards to appear on the landscape of the region. Little did he know back then, that the wine industry would become his passion and viticulture would be his career. Initially he was helping out Ruud in the development of the vineyard – as a contract worker. But it didn’t take him long to realise that Staete Landt was on to something special. When offered the chance to take on the viticultural responsibilities he jumped at it.
