Mulligan Stew February 14th 2015-Colin James Interview

hello

COLIN JAMES – HEARTS ON FIRE

colin james-hearts on fireFor his 16th studio album, Hearts On Fire, Colin James wanted to try something different.
“Making this record with my good friend Colin Linden and such a fantastic veteran rhythm section was an amazing experience,” “I loved working with the team that Colin Linden assembled for me in Nashville,” says James. “George Receli is the longtime drummer from Bob Dylan’s road band and Willie Weeks, the legendary bass player, who’s playing with Donny Hathaway I loved and Reese Wynans, the B3 and piano man of countless sessions.”

Colin and I talk about his long time friendship with Colin Linden.  (James was 13. Linden 16)
Colin also talks about why he wanted this release to have more down tempo/heartfelt songs..exactly the kind of song he loves live on stage.
Also reveals the lp should have perhaps been released before the 25 Live release.
Many of the songs co-written with Tom Wilson from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings
Colin James is an inductee in the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame. He has won six Juno Awards including “Male Vocalist of the Year” and the “Best Producer” award for his efforts with The Little Big Band.  He is the recipient of 17 Maple Blues Awards having most recently been honored in 2013 with “Entertainer of the Year”.

Mulligan Stew Feb 7th 2015- Dan Mangan Interview

hello

Dan-Mangan
Dan Mangan

Most certainly one of the musical highlights of last year was dan mangan and blacksmith performing live and in acapella    at the edmonton folk fest.
now with the release of club meds, they’ve turned a corner and are perhaps leaving some of the fans to make a choice.
follow the boys or find another happy quirky indy band.
Those bands are a dime  a dozen, so the choice is obvious..sign on for the long haul with dan and blacksmith because its going to be a very interesting and every changing ride.

February 7th 2015 – Rick Hansen

 THE SHOW

 Rick Hansen
In 1973, at the age of 15, Rick Hansen’s life changed forever. He was involved in an accident that paralyzed him from the waist down. Coming to terms with his new life, he found inspiration from teachers, coaches and family, and set new goals from new dreams. Rick went on to become one of Canada’s most decorated Paralympic athletes.

Rick Hansen

Rick Hansen

In March 1985, Rick set off from Vancouver to wheel 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries on the Man In Motion World Tour to prove the potential of people with disabilities. His 26-month journey inspired an entire nation to believe anything is possible and moved thousands to make a difference.
After the Tour, he established the Rick Hansen Foundation to find a cure for spinal cord injuries and create more accessible communities.
Since 1988, the Foundation has leveraged the $26 million raised during the Tour into $280 million in investments towards spinal cord research, accessibility projects and quality of life initiatives.
I had the honour of being in the right place at the right time and minutely assisted Rick in living his dream.
We’ve always stayed in touch and when Rick asked if I’d like to go Sturgeon fishing on the Frazer River in BC I said YES!!
Rick is working tirelessly to preserve what was once a dying breed of fish.
Rick Hansen founded the FRSCS in 1997 in response to the declining population of the prehistoric white sturgeon – a species that had survived virtually unchanged for 65 million years.
The Society has built an award-winning monitoring and assessment program.
Check out the photos..The first sturgeon we caught was 6’5” and the second was 8’, over 300 lbs and perhaps 90 years old.
Shot for top of page
All caught,  tagged and released, of course.

Tom Cochrane Interview – 2014

hello

RAW INTERVIEW HERE:

Tom COCHRANE 2014 RAW
Thomas William Cochrane was born in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada, on May 14, 1953.
His father, Tuck Cochrane, wasn’t just  a bush pilot. He was a flying/exploring legend in Northern Manitoba.
At the age of 11, Tom sold his toy train set…and bought his first guitar!
By the early 1970′s, Tom was performing in coffee houses all across Canada.
Next, he was on the road to Los Angeles, where Cochrane took a job writing original songs for the movies…but unable to find steady money in music…he headed to Toronto, where he drove a taxi. He also found work on cruise ships…hoping to return to music.
After meeting at the “El Mocambo Tavern,” in 1978, Tom Cochrane joined “Red Rider.” He would be the lead singer, and main song writer, for more than 10 years.
Red Rider was also: Ken Greer, Jeff Jones, Peter Boynton and Rob Baker. By 1986, they were “Tom Cochrane & Red Rider.”

TDM and Tom Cochrane-AfricaTDM invited Tom to join him on a World Vision Tour of Somalia, Mozambique  and other war torn countries in Africa. It changed both their lives.
Tom Cochrane would launch his solo career in 1991, with “Life Is A Highway” (#6/1992).
The “Mad, Mad World” album (seen at the top of the story) would sell 6 million copies!
The albums “Ragged Ass Road,” “Songs Of A Circling Spirit,” “X-Ray Sierra” and “No Stranger” would follow.
He and wife Kathleen have 2 daughters, Cody and Evanne. They live in Oakville, Ontario. In the winter, the  Cochranes spend time at his home outside of Austin, Texas.
Tom Cochrane has earned many awards over the years, both for his music and charity work. He has won 7 “Juno” awards, is a member of the “Canadian Music Hall Of Fame,” and officer of the “Order Of Canada,” is an honorary Colonel in the “Royal Canadian Air Force,” and a 2009 inductee onto the “Canadian Walk Of Fame,” among other recognition.
He continues to tour, packing in the crowds, across Canada.
He plays Grey Eagle Resort in Calgary  Feb 20.
Tom’s first Lp in years has just been released..it’s called Take it Home..
We talk his new music, being a Canadian living in Texas, why Austin and not Nashville, why Canadian artists over the years have been able to capture the soul of the American south.

TRR Annual Soup Special..considering its SouperBowl Weekend.
 Unattributed feminist quote:
“Men are like soup: you always want to have one on the back burner, just in case.
 Napoleon Bonaparte:
“An army travels on its stomach. Soup makes the soldier.”
 Nora Ephron, American food writer:
“What I love about cooking is that after a hard day, there is something comforting about the fact that if you melt butter and add flour and then hot stock, it will get thick! It’s a sure thing! It’s a sure thing in a world where nothing is sure; it has a mathematical certainty in a world where those of us who long for some kind of certainty are forced to settle for crossword puzzles.”
“Good soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living.  For soup can do more to lift the spirits and stimulate the appetite than any other one dish.”
Louis P. De Gouy, ‘The Soup Book’ (1949)
I love my soup and I don’t think I’m alone in that. A well made pot of soup is  such great comfort food  It’s wholesome. Nutritious. Life affirming  and many times taken completely for granted. But not today.. The special kicks off with the kick off to this year’s Dine Out Vancouver.
50 chefs – One Soup.
Takes place at the Pacific institute of Culinary Art (PICA).
All chefs attending bring at least one ingredient. The finished soups, one is vegetarian, are then served free to anyone who comes by PICA..

Dine Out Vancouver
Last week we teased Dine Out in Vancouver by visiting craft beer and distilleries in The East End.
This week we’re  down to the nitty gritty..food and the chefs that create with them.
We start with organizer Lucas Pavan who sends us out into the night.
We start on the edge of Vancouver’s Chinatown at The Parker with Chef Felix Zhou and co-owner Steve Da Cruz.

Then its off to Chef Geoff Rogers at Blacktail in Gastown..near the steam clock.
Yes, it was once called Blacktail Florist but now it’s just Blacktail. And with the name change a new chef.
Executive chef Geoff Rogers, perhaps you saw him on  Top Chef Canada, comes from Calgary.  Geoff brings his fresh culinary skills from stops at  River Café  Muse and Market.
The dude is damn good. The whole kitchen has smartened up..all for the better.

Then we’re off to Robson Street and Chris Whittaker at Forage.
“Forage stands for everything I care about. It represents what I was taught about food preparation both when I was growing up and over the course of my career in the kitchen. To me forage means that we no longer seek out excess and indulgence, but instead revisit a time when we respected the land and oceans and took only what we needed to survive. It is about being stewards of our land and true conservationists, as we conduct our business and live our lives. It is about goodness, about taking care of each other, and bringing together our community over good food”. —Chris Whittaker, Head Chef – Forage

Isn’t that the kind of thinking we all want from the kitchen??

They’re friends..and sometimes grow the same wines but that’s where the similarity ends.
Randy is in Big Red heaven on the Black Sage Road in south Okanagan..and Bobby Gidda is just below Mission Hill in West Kelowna.
Let’s find out what makes them so different from each other.

… and we finish off this Tasting Room Radio with Alison Sokol Blosser team leader from Sokol Blosser  one of the pioneering wine families in Oregon.
They’ve been growing grapes for more than 40 years. Before there was an Oregon wine industry.
Sokol Blosser produce Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chard, Pinot Blanc and small quantities of special block Pinot Noirs.
Alison along with her brothers Alex and Nik,  have taken over the leadership of the family winery  and are helping to lead the Oregon wine industry into its second generation.
Alison kindly answered all my Oregon wine questions before we got to her wines. For that I thank her.
