Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew March 14th 2020- Special Guest William Prince

hello

Our special guest is William Prince. Calls Winnipeg home.

Since releasing his first album Earthly Days and its great single Breathless.  Won a Juno for Contemporary Roots Album

He loved the award, especially because the songs were judged on music, not ethnicity.

William has been riding a career headed straight up – he’s released his second album Reliever.

(Lost his Father and became a Dad in the same year)

This weekend William is doing three nights in a row a Winnipeg’s East Cultural Centre.

Then its Berlin, London, Dublin, etc.

Kansas City, Boston, New York, New Orleans Jazz Festival, etc..

Enjoy our interview..he’s an amazing guy.

One of This week’s donors suggested an East Coast/West Coast thing.  Put together some WhiteHorse, Harry Manx, Alan Doyle, Stephen Fearing, Joel Plaskett.

New tracks from Roy Forbes, Nuela Charles.

Kicks things off with Eric Clapton honoring Robert Johnson..three times.

Got you some Allman Bros, Every Bros, Little Feat, Dr John, Richie Valens, and Tedeschi Trucks Band Live.

Enjoy your Saturday Night.

Happy St Patrick’s Day

Mulligan Stew March 7th 2020- Special Guest Frazey Ford

hello

March 7 brings the return of Frazey Ford, although she never really went away. We just kept playing Indian Ocean until the first teaser singles started to show a couple of months back. Sneaky good tracks here with a really fine band. Songs that start low and quiet ended up doing a slow burn   Frazey talks about Azad the lead track. A very personal story about her sister and her family. Same with Purple and Brown. This interview.

It’s not about tour dates or summer plans. Its all about her life growing up with her Hippie draft-dodging parents and her larger than life Mom. I wouldn’t be surprised if Frazey is #1  on the CKUA top 30 albums. We love the person and her music and we’re not the only ones.

Playlist includes Bowie and Queen, Puss N Boots, Alan Doyle and his #1 Country album in Canad (what??) Andy Shaun and Nathaniel Rateliff (who will be a guest in 2-3 weeks)Got some Rory Block, Laurie Anderson, Van the Man Live, New Wood Bros, Tami Neilson back to back with Leeroy Stagger and Rocking Roy Forbes and his new album. Edge of Blue Heads UP. Future guests include William Prince. Nathaniel Rateliff. Roy Forbes.

Mulligan Stew Feb 22 2020- Andy Shauf – The Neon Skyline

hello

For those music fans who discovered the seductive narrative of  Andy Shauf through his last album The Party, just know that he’s hooked up with three of the party-goers and headed for The Skyline Bar in Parkdale, Toronto.

There’s his buddy Charlie, Rose the bartender and  Judy.

Oh!  His ex is in the bar as well.

You just don’t hear concept albums and certainly not concept songwriting and production at this level.

PhotoCreditColinMedley

Amy van Keeken, who knows a thing or two about songwriting wrote me a note ..

The Neon Skyline is so good. Listening to the whole album start to finish

in one go (like people used to do) adds a deeper level of meaning to the songs and the narrative.  It’s brilliant”

Andy’s buddies Foxwarren are up for a Juno Award March 15 but Andy will be in Bourdeaux on tour.

I’ve asked Andy to leave his acceptance speech with us in our chat.

The rest of our two-hour show features handpicked Saturday night music.

Mulligan Stew Feb 15th 2010-The Bard & The Beatles

hello

For centuries scholars have debated whether William Shakespeare actually wrote the plays attributed to him. How about  John Lennon, George Harrison  or Paul McCartney?

Opening tonight at The Citadel in Edmonton, director Daryl Cloran weaves  two dozen Beatles’ songs into the text of As You Like It, set in 1960s Vancouver and “the wild Okanagan.“

Mulligan Stew Feb 8th 2020-Mexico Themes!

hello

For over 80 years CKUA has been donor supported.  The human engine that keeps us on-air and moving forward.

So when program donors plunk down the big dough to sponsor an hour of The Stew I pay attention to what they are saying.

I’ve become friends with many of them.

For example..the first hour Saturday is sponsored by Mary and Graeme.  They’ve been here many times..we ended up fishing together.

This shows they’re in Mexico and suggested tunes with Mexico themes or references.

So…

James Taylor – Mexico

Jim Byrnes – Postcard from Mexico

Los Lobos – La Bamba

Carlos  Santana and Willie Nelson – They all went to Mexico

Taj Mahal – Senior Blues

Duke Robillard – Down in Mexico

Texas Tornados – Adios Mexico

Linda Ronstadt – Por un Amor

Our second donor Michael..suggested tracking some Barney Bentall music

Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts – Something to live for

Barney – Hey Mama from The Drifter and the Preacher

The Radio Grande – King of July

Then we go out in a blaze of glory

Paul Simon

Harry Manx

Steve Winwood

Sarah McLachlan

Steely Dan

Sheryl Crow and Joe Walsh

The Wood Bros

Check out the new podcast

Colin Linden- Tom Wilson of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings

Celebrating 25m years together in 2020.  Big tour.

And to kick the year off Colin won a Grammy for co-producing Keb Mo’s Oklahoma

And Tom Wilson is up for a Juno next week.

Stephen Fearing is touring the UK.  What a bunch.

OH – Next week an interview with Daryl Cloren  the Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton

Mulligan Stew Jan 25th 2020- Alan Doyle

hello

Who doesn’t like Alan Doyle? Artist. Actor. Authour. Favourite son of Petty Harbour and all of Newfoundland.

His solo career after Great Big Sea has achieved lift-off in Canada and now USA and Britain.

I found him in Toronto, waiting out the monster snowstorm that took over the East Coast.

We’re talking about his new EP Rough Side Out. Released Valentines Day

THE COMPLETE 30-minute interview is  posted on The Mulligan Stew Podcast

And his tour dates across the West starting Feb 25 in Lethbridge

Followed by The Hat, Red Deer, Calgary. Edmonton, Lloydminster, Fort Mac & Grand Prairie.

Alan also reveals that this EP has a country lean, still with Maritime influences.

There’s a great cover of John Mellencamp’s  Paper in Fire from his game-changing Lonesome Jubilee.

A dollar from each ticket goes to his support of addiction and mental health organizations.

There are few artists capable of appealing to music fans of all stripes, and Alan Doyle is one of them. From the moment he burst onto the scene in the early 1990s with his band Great Big Sea, Canadians fell in love with the pride of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, whose boundless charisma and sense of humor was eclipsed only by his magnetic stage presence.

His influence is now being heard in a new generation of artists as his solo work continues to endear him to roots music fans everywhere.  Alan’s new EP Rough Side Out, finds him collaborating with Canadian country music superstars Dean Brody and Jess Moskaluke, while at the same time defining his interpretation of contemporary country.

The seeds for Rough Side Out were planted in 2012 when Brody asked Great Big Sea to record the song “It’s Friday” with him for the Platinum-selling album Dirt. For Alan, that was the moment he realized the door to the country music world was open for he and other east coast Celtic-leaning artists, and since then he’s warmly embraced building closer ties. “My personal journey with the whole thing has been very organic,” Alan says. “When my parents weren’t listening to traditional folk music, they were listening to country music on the radio. So, when I began creating my own musical identity, I was inspired by artists who were able to blend those two worlds.”

Alan is a classic storyteller and this podcast is filled with his stories.

Mulligan Stew January 18th 2020- Tonight We Dance with Laura!

hello

Saturday night we’re going to be Dancing with  Laura.

Laura Ryan-Walsh passed away October 9  2017.

She was a teacher and a great Mother. From Newfoundland but spent most of her life in Calgary

Long-time listener to CKUA and Mulligan Stew.

Her daughters Erin, Megan, and their Father Adrian all were involved in this one-hour donation.

The Ryan and Walsh families will be listening in Calgary, St John’s, Florida, Dubai, and Grande Prairie.

Laura loved great music and she passed that love on to her family and friends.

The Stones, Cohen, Van, Otis,  Aretha, Dylan, Neil Young, The Band, and the blues. We’ll play them all.

Old Crow Medicine Show

Including Wagon Wheel from Old Crow Medicine Show ..which for Laura’s birthday the family rewrote the lyrics to.

I’m told that in the final weeks of her life..she asked for and received a small radio beside her bed so she could listen to CKUA and The Stew.

Toward the end of her life when she could no longer walk, a nurse walking by her hospital room commented that she was always smiling.

Laura replied You’ve got to smile if you can’t dance”

Saturday night we dance for Laura…

Mulligan Stew Jan 11th 2020- 50 years of #1 Albums-Neil Peart

hello

Ran across a headline that reminded us/me that we have just gone through a music time warp.

As 2019 turned into 2020 and a new decade ..it also became 50 years since 1969 became 1970.

Here’s a list of artists and albums who made the transition from one decade to another. FIFTY  FREAKING YEARS AGO.

And they didn’t just transition – they became #1 albums that changed lives and made history.

The biggest was The Beatles  Abbey Road – #1 for 11 straight weeks

Led Zeppelin 2 – #1 for 6 weeks

Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge over troubled water 10 weeks at #1

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young – Deja Vu #1 for a week

CCR – Cosmo’s Factory – Their 4th #1 album.  In a Row

Santana – Abraxas was #1 for 6 weeks

Paul McCartney had a #1 solo album for 3 weeks

And The Beatles had Let it Be at #1 for 4 weeks.

It was an amazing time in music.

The Stew will be saluting and playing all those albums and more Saturday 5-7.
