Can a 3-year-old change the direction of a band?

This week the return of the force known as Paul Janeway – leader of  St Paul and the Broken Bones. (checking in from Birmingham Alabama.)

We’re going to be talking about their latest album Angels in Science Fiction

Paul tells us it’s a turning point for the band after 10 years together.

Even though the core members are mostly unchanged,  this is not the soul band that swept over all of music in 2012 with the EP Greetings from St Paul and the Broken Bones.

Now 5 albums later they’re taking their fans in another more introspective direction., The funk and groove can still be found but now Paul is writing and singing about being a father and his conversation with his wife about

“do what kind of  world are we bringing our daughter into?” They had a daughter.

Songs with lyrics like

Dust to Dust”

“Try your best to make a difference. Starting with the people around you”

Songs about denial, fear, and acceptance.

There’s a renewed sense of spirituality throughout the album.

One question I wanted to include was

“How will these songs mesh live with the horn/soul band songs that you were playing over the past 10 years”.

Lots of stories and discussions.

Two things – they play the Saskatoon Jazz Festival July 8

And the Calgary Stampede July 9

AND

Her name is Marigold.

EP 195 | Paul Janeway – St. Paul & The Broken Bones

hello

St Paul and the Broken Bones.  The best name in years.

Our guest is the co-founder, lead singer, and co-writer Paul Janeway…the Paul of St Paul.

They’ve just released their 4th Album The Alien Coast. Fair to say, it’s not like the other three.

The groove is still there but they’re singing about classic painters, fever dreams, dancing as the World ends.

Paul Janeway looks like what he was planning to be – an accountant and bank teller – or a Preacher.

On stage, he brings the fire and brimstone of a Preacher but with the composure of Marvin Gaye and the driven belief of James Brown.

There’s so much to talk about here. Faith. Love. Devotion.

With three tracks included from The Alien Coast, we proudly present Paul Janeway – St Paul and the Broken Bones.

Mulligan Stew Feb 19th 2022-Special Guest Paul Janeway

hello

Does anyone remember the moment a couple of years ago at the Edmonton Folk Fest when Paul Janeway left the Broken Bones blasting on stage and took his microphone into the audience and walked halfway up the hill?

He’d still be going but the mic stopped working.

It’s the kind of thing a firebrand preacher might do. That’s part of Paul’s childhood in Alabama.

He didn’t hear any popular music on the radio until his late teens because he and his family only listened to gospel stations.

Paul claims his gateway drug into secular music was early Tom Waits. Good Call.

We talk about the Edmonton Folk Fest, finding his voice, Paul talks about Oasis Pizza. That’s the routine they go through backstage just before they go on.

He talks about how he transforms into St Paul as he walks out to the mic and also fills us in on his best friend and co-founder/bassist  Jessie Philips.  Jessie’s hometown isn’t Birmingham, Alabama. It’s Fernie, BC.

Paul also proudly brings their new album  The Alien Coast. That’s where they all live – on The Gulf of Mexico coastline. Early explorers called it The Alien Coastline.

It’s not exactly the same R&B band you may have fallen for.  The groove is still there but the lyrics reference classic art and painters, dream state content, etc.

All this plus 2 hours of hand-picked tunes.

New tracks from John Mellencamp (with Bruce Springsteen), Bahamas,  Taj and Ry,  Matt Anderson, Walk off the Earth, Aaron Neville, next week’s guest Keb’ Mo’.

The complete Interview with Paul Janeway – with tracks – can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast. Also available on video. Details at www.mulliganstew.ca

FYI – Next weeks Podcast features Keb’ Mo’
