hello

OK Spring Festival has started plus  Spring releases from Painted Rock & Winemaker’s Cut.

THE SHOW

Kimberly Hundertmark – GM Okanagan Wine Festivals

Kimberly Hundertmark

The Okanagan Wine Festival returns this June with three weeks in wine country.  There is no better time to visit BC Wine Country than in June.

Festival of the Grape

Just before the summer season kicks into high gear,  The Okanagan Spring Wine Festival will focus on a TASTE and SIPS series of events throughout the Okanagan Valley – from June 2 through the 23.

The official launch of the  Spring Wine Festival will take place at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre on Friday, June 7, following the British Columbia Wine Awards where the 2024 BC TOP 50 and the Wine of the Year will be announced. The wines were judged by an hand picked  panel of wine experts the previous week, and the BC TOP 50 wines will be making their first public appearance at the  BC TOP 50 Grand Tasting.

The Okanagan Spring Wine Festival sees the return of the TASTE Series, which includes carefully curated events in various locations. The TASTE Series will launch with the Naramata Bench Wineries Association on Sunday, June 2, followed by the District Wine Village on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9.

Also new this year are two events in the SIPS Series.  Summer Sips at Spirit Ridge Resort and Destination Silver Star – outside in Vernon.

Best of all – Kimberly takes us through all the events,  big and small, so there’s something for everyone

All events can be found at www.thewinefestivals.com

John Skinner    co-founder Painted Rock Winery (Okanagan Falls)

John was a stockbroker in Vancouver for more than 25 years, during which time he became an avid wine enthusiast. John and his wife Trish dreamed of having their own vineyard after spending time exploring wineries in the South of France with their family. In 2004,  they purchased the land in south Penticton known locally as “The Blackhawk.”

Perched high on a bench on the east side of Skaha Lake south of Penticton, backing up against the famed climbing bluffs. Once an apricot farm, it had been fallow for 17 years. He planted in 2005 and 2006 and now has roughly 25 acres under vine, all of it Bordeaux reds or Syrah except for a block of Chardonnay. On the advice of consultants, he has planted multiple clones of every variety, giving his winemaker good blending options.

John was confident that this terroir and its site influences presented “a unique opportunity to create exceptional wines” and that he had “both the opportunity and the obligation to do this property justice.” John and Trish’s vision was and remains to grow exceptional grapes in their estate vineyard to produce ultra-premium wines that reflect the perfect marriage of new world fruit and old world processes, employing the best modern technologies and expertise, while respecting old world traditions.

Best of all, the whole family is involved. This is a very personal life journey for The Skinners.

John brings new information on possible deep freeze damages done to his vineyards and the news is good.

Painted Rock is open for business and pouring very top quality wines, including the two we talk about.

For example there are very few wineries who really attempt to make a rose that stands alone.

The 2023 Painted Rock Rose is a world class blend.

51% Merlot/15% Cabernet Sauvignon/12% Petit Verdot/ 11% Cab Franc/11% Malbec.

A rose completely and fully formed. Delicious and memorable. A real rose.

The second wine John talks about is his 2022 estate grown Skaha Bench Chardonnay.

Very fruit forward. Granny Smith, peaches, vanilla – some spice, Meyer lemon. Long glorious finish.

A blend of four micro-harvests picked over 7 days.  8% aged for 6 months in French Oak. (45 new/55 used)  The last 15% in Stainless Steel

There are 3 clones involved. The third is a trade secret. John explains.

We also talked about the future of wine in BC and the status of the wine war between Alberta and BC.

My thanks to The Skinner Family.

Michal Mosny – Co-owner/Winemaker of Winemakers Cut/Q&A Wine

Michal, Terry and Jason

Michal and his wife Martina were involved in the Slovakian wine business. They were regular viewers of a wine show called Hollywood and Vines TV from the travel channel London. Hosted by Jason Priestley and myself. Produced by Chad Oakes in Calgary.

They especially loved the Okanagan stories we did. So much so that they travelled to the Okanagan, checked everything out and then went home and sold everything and moved to Oliver. When they got settled they bought a vineyard at Deadman lake and called their new home Winemakers Cut.  The winery became an instant success. Still is.

When we finally met, Michal suggested we celebrate his new life and home by creating a new wine called Q&A.  A Bordeaux style red blend and a gorgeous white blend of Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier. Both Jason and I are wildly happy for their success.

Chris Waters (Globe and Mail) interviews  Jason Priestley. Michal Mosny and TDM

Michael, Jason and Terry

THE SHOW

What started out as a Zoom interview for a story Christopher Waters was writing on Q&A Wine for his Easter Globe and Mail wine column has now become  a Tasting Room Radio show, a Podcast and video interview for TDM YouTube Channel.

Full Disclosure :

Q&A wine is a new partnership in the South Okanagan between myself, Jason and Winemakers Cut winemaker/owner Michal Mosny.

Michael Mosney

How this came to be is a wonderful story that starts the interview.

Make no mistake…  this interview is lead by Chris Waters.

Chris Waters

As someone who has done countless interviews,  it was such a treat to watch someone else carry the load and just enjoy the conversation. The surprise in the dialogue  were the outflow of words, opinions  and thoughts from Chris,  who was completely open and engaging.

I kept thinking “this would be a really good TRR and podcast”

So.  Here we are. With the help of Olivia Siu and Chris himself,  this weeks Tasting Room Radio is a friendly war of words about the wines of Canada, BC’s place in wine, Michal’s and Martina’s story of moving from Slovakia to Oliver BC and starting Winemakers Cut, Chris’s thoughts on Q&A Red and the just arriving Q&A RMV White , about wines that pleasantly surprise and Pink Floyd.

The Red is a blend of 45/Cab 38/Merlot 13/Cab Franc 4/Petit Verdot

The White  RMV a blend of 58/Rousanne 34/Marsanne 8/Viognier

Christopher was kind enough to award the Q&A Red Blend 91 Points and the Q&A White Blend  92 Points

Christopher Waters  is a WSET certified instructor. He is the acclaimed wine and spirits columnist at The Globe and Mail.

For 21 years, Christopher was the editor/co-founder of Canada’s largest circulation wine publication, VINES, and author of the nationally syndicated column, Waters & Wine. An internationally recognized wine judge, Christopher represents Canada for the Globe Fine Wine Challenge in Sydney, Australia and served as head judge and organizer of the InterVin International Wine Awards from 2009-2019.

Michal Mosny is the co-owner and winemaker at Winemakers Cut in Oliver, BC

He and his wife/winemaker Martina moved from Slovakia to BC in 2004 after seeing the Okanagan featured on Hollywood and Vines TV. The hosts were Jason Priestley and TDMulligan.

Producer was Chad Oakes... he has his own wine.

January 7th, 2023-Q&A with new wine called….Q&A!

hello

A Q&A with new wine called….Q&A

THE SHOW

It’s a really great story.

Jason Priestley and I co-hosted/co-produced Hollywood and Vines TV for a number of years with our pal Producer Chad Oakes.

It was shown in over 90 countries via Travel Channel UK (London)

One of our Okanagan shoots was seen in Slovakia by winemaker Michael Mosny and his wife  Martina.

They liked what they saw and heard, came to Canada, checked out the Okanagan Valley, and loved it.

They said goodbye to their friends in Europe, moved to Oliver, and started a winery,  a very successful label called Winemakers Cut.

Several years later I’m doing interviews for Tasting Room Radio in Victoria.  I was impressed with a new winery that had seemingly appeared overnight and could be found in most wine stores and restaurant wine lists. I introduced myself to Michal at the Winemaker’s Cut table and he said

“you have no idea why I’m here, do you?”

To my amazement, Michal told me the whole story of how Winemakers Cut ended up on that table in front of him.

We became good friends.

Several years later Michal suggested we make a wine together – to celebrate.  He happened to have the makings of a Bordeaux-inspired blend sitting on oak in his cellar. I asked Jason and he loved the idea. We came up with the name Q&A and things started to roll from there. Well, here we are..

Jason and I have stepped into the world of wine.

The difference is, we’re not consumers. We’re partners with winemaker Michal and Winemakers Cut in Oliver BC

Jason for several years had been an investor in Black Hills Winery, the maker of the iconic Nota Bene.

After the sale of Black Hills, I continued to search for exceptional terroir capable of producing a peerless Bordeaux-style blend. Throughout this journey, I merged paths with Terry and then Michal. Together, we questioned what we already know, over and over again,” said Priestley“After looking everywhere, all roads lead to one answer and the answer is once again in the Okanagan. This time, the difference is in the details, with a focus on elegance and finesse.”

Q&A “I heard about Canadian wine for the first time from Terry and Jason’s international television show, Hollywood and Vines TV, and it quickly became my passion  They are the reason why I decided to move here with my wife in 2012 and make wines in the Okanagan Valley.”   Slovakian-Canadian Michal Mosny is the proprietor of Winemaker’s CUT, an acclaimed winery based in the District Wine Village in Oliver, BC.

Q&A started rolling out in November of 2022. It’s just now beginning to show up on select wine store shelves and restaurant wine lists.

Check out qa.wine for more information

It’s a Bordeaux-inspired blend ..

45% Cabernet Sauvignon

38% Merlot

13% Cabernet Franc

4% Petit Verdot

100% Yummy!
