Mulligan Stew Jan 6th 2024-Looking back and forward Plus Celebrating THE FLYING V

hello

We hope you all had a memorable and warm Christmas/New Years season.

The first show of 2024 will celebrate several careers & salute a true rock guitar. Gibson’s Flying V

First is Les McCann who passed Dec 29.

Les kicked down the walls of jazz and opened it up to a whole new audience

He started a groove movement with one great single Compared to What?   An anti-war song you could dance to.

He was much more than one song. Discover him for yourself.

The second career we salute is Lou Rawls who closes the show singing harmony with his pal Sam Cooke.

Our two RAM monthly donors contributed to the mix.

One wanted Jimmy Smith’s Walk on the Wild Side, which I gladly played,  followed by Tower of Power and a newly discovered Squibcakes and the second RAM requested In My Life.  Johnny Cash did the honours.

New music from Arkells, Willy and Keith, Allison Russell, Matt Anderson, Taj, Bruce Springsteen, Celeigh Cardinal, Devin Cuddy & Corb.

A donor birthday double shot of U2(with BB King) and The Hip.

AND THEN – To celebrate the launch of Gibson’s Flying V Guitar on Jan 6 1958

With the email help of Collin Cripps from The Cuddy Band & Blue Rodeo I got a crash course in who played the Flying V over the years.

Albert King played an original 1958  Flying V  throughout his career, as did Lonnie Mack.

The Flying V was also played by Jimi, Keith Richards, Eddie Van Halen,  Slash, Joe Bonamassa, Tom Petty, David GoGo and in the early 70s Neil Young.

An original Flying V now is worth at least half a million. More if it’s in the original case and they both look good.

Joining in the celebration

Albert King –  Crosscut Saw

Lonnie Mack –  Memphis

Neil Young – Southern Man

HEADS UP – Next week’s very special guest is Drummer and Legend Russ Kunkel. Currently a member of The Immediate Family. (the documentary is screening now)

The new album coming out Feb 16  Skin in the Game.

Working and touring with Cat Stevens, Joni, Linda Ronstadt, Lyle Lovett,  Neil Young, Bahamas, Dylan Graham Nash, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, BB King, Bill Withers, Aaron Neville, Warren Zevon, The Derek Trucks Band, Rod Stewart, Steven Stills, Joe Cocker, CSN, JJ Cale, Jimmy Buffett, Bonnie Raitt, Tony Bennett ……… and he’s on the next Dylan Album. Coming later this year.

Mulligan Stew Dec 30th 2023-The End of The Year Interviews

hello

The last Mulligan Stew of 2023 is a look back at some outstanding interview guests who crossed our path in 2023.

We can’t feature them all,  as it was a very busy buzzy year.  We had guests on our weekly show PLUS a Summer of music festivals.

Here’s the engaged lineup for the interviews of 2023.

Luke Doucette and Melissa McClelland – Whitehorse

(I’m not crying. You’re crying)

Booker T Jones – Booker T and the Mg’s/Stax Soul Revue

David Landreth – The Bros. Landreth. The story of one of their songs being recorded by Bonnie Raitt and then Bonnie winning three Grammys in 2023, one of which was their song Made Up Mind. Plus their lives were changed as their career path took off.

Mariel Buckley – Dealing with being invited to perform at the American Fest in Nashville, a Polaris nomination, Winnipeg Folk Fest, released a deluxe version of her album Everywhere I Used to be and showcased at the Edmonton Folk Festival.

The Juno Couch – CKUA Performance Space – Edmonton. Co-Hosts Dan Mangan, Tom Wilson, Jim Cuddy. Guests Shoshona and Raven of Diggin’ Roots.

(We’ll play Bruce Springsteen,  Diggin’ Roots, Dan Mangan, Tom Wilson and Jim Cuddy)

Followed by the last interview I did with the original rock DJ in Canada – Red Robinson. His timing was incredible.

At 16 years of age, he talked his way into CJOR in Vancouver and started playing rock singles..just as they were breaking out

Jerry Lee/Little Richard, Fats, Every Brothers, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Elvis. He interviewed them all and for his leadership was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame – as a builder.

Red brings stories about Bill Haley, Fats, Ray, Richard and Elvis.

(we’ll play you Elvis, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly and Little Richard)

We’ll finish the last show in 2023 with one of the most interesting stories we covered. The formation of 4 friends into a super band called Trans Canada Highwaymen. Steven Page (BNLadies), Craig Murphy (Sloan) join us.  TCH also features Moe Berg (Pursuit of Happiness)  and Craig Northey (Odds and Steven Page Trio)

Happy New Year my friends. Enjoy the tunes and the memories.

Both on Bowen Island. Opposite Horseshoe Bay!

Above the Danforth in Toronto.

All four friends were asked to bring with them songs for the season and  Christmas moments they’d like to share. In typical songwriters circle fashion song selection changed,  depending on who sang what before them.

What we captured in the recording were  memories of darker days, a lot of laughs, heartfelt goodness and  strong songs.

The video version of this special can  be screened on the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel.

Important note:

During these two hours of The Christmas Stew we’re asking listeners to consider donating to the Food Banks of Alberta.

Mulligan Stew Dec 16th 2023- Christmas in The Round 2018 Revisited

hello

It all started as a Christmas Tradition many years ago at the CBC.
Christmas songs and stories were exchanged in a studio with artists who knew and respected each other.  Roy Forbes and Shari Ulrich

were in that studio years ago and over the years
we’ve always talked about keeping that tradition alive.
(As always in memory of our producer Susan Englebert, who lost her battle
with Cancer)

When Barney Bentall started doing Christmas Food Bank Tours with his Cariboo Express the possibility of gathering once again became a reality.
On the next Stew, a repeat of Christmas in the Round – Year One.  Recorded  2018 in the boardroom at Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver.  Thank You Don Shafer.

The Rounders are:

Shari Ulrich – iconic singer, songwriter, and musician.
Roy Forbes – Host of Roy’s Record Room and much-admired artist.
Barney Bentall – He’s everywhere and always making great music. Bringing joy!
Shaun Verreault –  One half of Wide Mouth Mason.  String Slinger. Sings like a bird
Jim Byrnes – St Louis born…West Coast raised. Carries the blues with him.  Fine actor.
Craig Northey – co-founder of  Odds. Touring with Steven Page Trio. Currently a member of Trans Canada Highwaymen.   Solid Songwriter.
Everyone brings a favorite Christmas song and personal story to exchange.
Fun was had by all…  Hope you like.
Susan would have loved it.

Merry Christmas all!

Mulligan Stew Dec 9th 2023- Remembering Shane, Rick Danko & Otis Redding. Matt Layzell from The Matinee Guests.

hello

It’s mushroom season in the forests and fields of BC’s West Coast. It’s called foraging.

Small groups of Shroomheads are roaming all over the place. The payoff is their inclusion in amazing seasonal dishes.

This week I did the studio version of foraging.

Dug deep and reconnected with The Wailin’ Jenny’s, Junior Wells, Stevie Ray playing Guitar Shorty’s Thangs I used to do live at Carnegie Hall.

Jackson Browne, Huey Lewis and Tower of Power – together. Dr. John & BB King, The Wallflowers,

The Stones. And yes, we remember three  icons

We remember  Shane MacGowan. Playing The Pogues and Joe Strummer live in London Dirty Old Town

And honouring Otis Redding,  who died Dec 10, 1967, along with most of his band in a small plane crash while on tour. Booker T Jones returns to The Stew to tell the tale of how they felt at Stax Records and how he and Steve Cropper got Dock of the Bay finished and released., FYI Booker T is bringing his big Stax Revue to the Edmonton Blues Fest Aug 16

Tickets and the full line up released on Friday, Dec 8

Rick Danko  (The Band) died in his sleep Dec 10 1999. Playing Rick’s heartbreaking vocals on It makes no difference from The Last Waltz.

New music from Celeigh Cardinal, Trans Canada Highwaymen, Fall Out Boy, Amos Lee, Corb Lund, CB Green, Doobies, Mick Fleetwood – Song for Lahaina,

Start with the wild voice of Kelley Hunt.

Our guest is Matt Layzell from The Matinee. They have released a new album Change of Scene

They’ve been friends making music for 15 years. This feels like the album that really pays off on  all the hard work.

Produced by Steve Dawson who brought  into the studio Allison Russell and The McCrary Sisters.

The complete interview can be heard on the Mulligan Stew podcast and the Terry David Mulligan youtube channel

Next week we’ll have their new Christmas single –  Last Christmas

Mulligan Stew Dec 2nd 2023-Donor Driven – Years best albums from 50 years ago – 1973 and Devin Cuddy & new album

hello

The first Saturday in December is the start of The Wrapping  Season and also the Wrap-Up of the Year Season.

Whilst wrapping up the 2023 album list,  our donor for this week,  Michael Witt suggested taking a look back 50 years to the best albums of 1973 – 50 years back.

I’m thinking – any year that has a #1 hit from Tony Orlando and Dawn, should be passed on.

BUT after some deep diving, I’ve changed my mind on 73.

  • Stevie Wonder – Innervisions
  • The Who – Quadrophenia
  • David Bowie -Aladin Sane
  • Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – The Wild, the Innocent and the E street shuffle
  • Paul McCartney – Band on the Run
  • Marvin Gaye – Let’s get It On
  • Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
  • Tom Waits – Closing Time
  • Lou Reed – Berlin
  • Jimmy Cliff – Harder They Come
  • Bob Marley and The Wailers – Burnin’
  • Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy
  • Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Of note – Marley wrote Burnin’ and Lootin’ in response to Jimmy Cliff’s Many Rivers to Cross.

“How many rivers do we have to cross before we can talk to The Boss”

Can’t get them all in but we’ll do our best.

 and that’s just hour one.

Hour Two – the special guest is Devin Cuddy and his fine new album Dear Jane.

A crazy mix of Country, New Orleans, great old-time music, roots and moments inspired by artists like  Randy Newman.

In two weeks The Guest is Matt Layzell From The Matinee – New Album Change of Scene

Mulligan Stew Nov 25th 2023- Donor Driven & The Anniversary of The Last Waltz

hello

First-hour donors are a collective of family and friends who each contributed to honouring David Westelmajer. Long-time donor. Teacher, father and artisan who worked in mud. Hand-shaped and spun pottery.
I could tell how important this was and how much David was loved by the 8 pages of stories and moments I received.
He was a huge fan of CKUA and his family asked that donations in his memory be sent to several charities and social artisans including CKUA Radio.

I’m grateful they asked The Stew and CKUA to be their voice.
(David was a serious listener as he worked his pottery and listened daily. He decided that if he had to work in his studio but could look out at the World around him, he’d like to look at the Pacific Ocean and so he and his wife Jane ended up living at the very southern tip of Vancouver Island.
Their very first date was a Buddy Guy concert. The second was Moe Koffman.

We’ll also look back at Nov 25 1976 and the final concert by The Band at the Winterland Ballroom in SF. Called The Last Waltz.
New music from the next two guests Devin Cuddy Band And The Matinee, Van Morrison, The Hip, Sam Roberts Band, Dan Mangan, and Rhiannon Giddens.
Plus Clapton. Ry Cooder And the Cooder/Lindley families, Randy Newman goes full Muddy and finishes with the last 8 songs on Abbey Road.

Mulligan Stew Nov 18th 2023- The Stew welcomes Thee Trans Canada Highwaymen!

hello

It’s like having The Beatles on Saturday’s Mulligan Stew. But you can only have two. Do you want Ringo and Paul or George and John?
Saturday our guests are Steven Page (BNL & Steven Page Trio) and Chris Murphy (Sloan).
The other members of TCH are Moe Berg (Pursuit of Happiness) and Craig Northey (odds and SP Trio)
Each leads his own group but they got together to sing covers of each other’s music. Then the K-Tel idea came along. For younger music fans  – K-Tel albums were Canadian hits crammed into 8 tracks,  cassettes and albums. With garish labels that you couldn’t miss in your local store or gasoline station.  Great hits – horrid packaging. Which is why the guys covered the best hits and copied the artwork. Steven  makes the point that they loved these hits because they were Canadian.  They were ours. Our American friends had never heard these songs  but  to us they were Northern memories.
They each take turns singing the lead vocal and back each other up.
Covering hits by The Guess Who, Joni Mitchell, Paul Anka, April Wine, Bim (Roy Forbes), Lighthouse, Poppy Family etc.
