Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew April 15th 2023- Special Guest AC Newman-The New Pornographers

hello

“The idea of continuing as a guest felt very apropos to the times,  “Feeling out of place in culture, in society—not feeling like a part of any zeitgeist, but happy to be separate and living your simple life, your long fade-out.

Find your own little nowhere, find some space to fall apart, continue as a guest.”  Carl Newman

AC Newman returns to The Stew with the 7th New Pornographers studio album Continue as a Guest.

The New P’s have been acclaimed since forming in Vancouver in 1997.

They were dubbed a Super Group.

They weren’t so much super as stellar.

A great blend of melodies,  hooks, word puzzles and fine harmonies.

Pitchfork has described the band’s sound as “peppy, gleeful, headstrong guitar pop“,[3] while Stereogum called the band’s debut album Mass Romantic as “one of the greatest and most immediate power pop albums ever rendered”

I found Carl at home in Woodstock NY. Having followed the band’s early years in Vancouver,  we had lots to talk about.

Mulligan Stew April 8th 2023- Special Guest Ron Sexsmith

hello

This week’s Easter Bunny is dressed up as Ron Sexsmith. His 17th studio album
is called The Vivian Line.

As always Ron is very transparent in his writing and life in general.
I think he still marvels at the life he’s lead and the career he’s hand-built.
The Vivian Line is a rural road that winds its way out of Toronto and slowly leads to his new home in Stratford. The change in his lifestyle is reflected in these songs.

What I had in mind is Ron in grade school having second thoughts about fitting it.
The oldest song is the best I think. Diamond Wave. It just took years for all the pieces to fit.
Ron says when he first started to sing When our love was new on stage he ended up crying his way through.
He channels Leonard Cohen on the final track Ever Wonder.
Lots of stories and dry humour from a country gentleman Ron Sexsmith.
Complete interview on Mulligan Stew Podcast and
Video Ron on tdm youtube channel.

Mulligan Stew March 25th 2023-Special Guest Dan Mangan

hello

Special Guest is Dan Mangan. In Hour Two

Yes, he was just a co-host on The Juno Couch.

We had already done this interview before the Couch was a thing.

And we didn’t get to talk during our Juno special because we were busy with other guests.

The focus here is Dan’s new album Being Somewhere.

This interview is more music driven than the Podcast.

Dan also openly reveals the vocal health issues he’s been dealing with.

I managed to put all of the stress in my body, into my jaw. I’m dealing with it now. There’s a softer touch to the vocal delivery”

Complete interview on Mulligan Stew Podcast and tdm YouTube channel.

We’ll celebrate Elton John’s Birthday – with a  deep track.

And we promise to lift your heart with

David Lindley, Leon Russell, Phoebe Snow and Dr John with Aaron Neville.

New music from Taj Mahal, William Prince, Ron Sexsmith, and Madeleine Roger and The Fretless.

Also in hour two new music from The Wood Bros, and a classic from John Hiatt, Aretha and the closer is all 12 minutes of Loan me a Dime from Boz Scaggs at Muscle Shoals with a young Duane Allman on guitar.

Mulligan Stew March 11th 2023-Its Juno weekend and we’ll be Live on the Juno Couch on Sunday BUT FIRST it’s the Stew on Saturday

hello

It’s Juno weekend and we’ll be Live on the Juno Couch on Sunday BUT FIRST, it’s the Stew on Saturday.

THE SHOW

We’ll salute the brilliance of David Lindley and Wayne Shorter.

The first-hour donor suggestion was “curate as you see fit,  maybe keep it bluesy and work in a few live tracks”

Great idea.

The bluesy tracks are Shakura S’Aida, Weather Report, Marc Jordan, and Amy Sky,

Live tracks from Los Lobos, Elton John, David Lindley, and Jackson Browne.

New music from Van Morrison, Gord Downie and Bob Rock, Jenn Grant, and Amy Milan, Peach and Quiet, Dan Mangan, Wood bros, John Fogerty, Tami Neilson, Cat Stevens, and Ron Sexsmith.

Remembering David Lindley and Wayne Shorter through Weather Report, Steely Dan, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, and Don Henley.

Wayne Shorter was a star in the jazz world. Playing with Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and the Jazz Messengers, Weather Report. He also felt comfortable enough to join other artists as a sideman. Wayne and Joni Mitchell were best friends, Steely Dan’s Aja Album for one, and Don Henley’s Grammy-winning The end of the Innocence.

David Lindley was the sideman’s sideman. He could play anything with strings and had the ability to cover what needed to be done, so that others playing with him had the creative freedom to improvise. He was also blessed with a killer dry wit.

Yes,  we’ll play Jackson Browne and David working together but Running on Empty will be a live track from a tour of Spain and the album Love is Strange.

Also, David Lindley with Ry Cooder from Bop ‘til you Drop and Linda Ronstadt and Heart Like a Wheel.

SUNDAY I’ll be Hosting the fourth annual Juno Couch – From 1-3 (Mtn) Live at CKUA Radio and video broadcast online via Facebook at

https://fb.me/e/AV5sSDeD

Cohosts Dan Mangan and Tom Wilson (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings)

Guests include

  • Angelique Francis
  • Digging Roots
  • Shawn Hall – Harp and Axe
  • Jon Dore
  • Shakura S’Aida
  • Marc Jordan and Amy Sky
  • There will be surprises……

Turn it UP!

Mulligan Stew March 4th 2023- 2 hours of fine music & remembering Richard Manuel!

hello

UNSPECIFIED – CIRCA 1976: Photo of Band (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Well, look at that – March. The first weekend in March.

What’s next?  Longer days and nights? New White wines for Spring?  Birds chortling in the trees?
YUP!!!

Well, let’s celebrate with 2 hours of hand-picked music.

NEW music from Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder, Van Morrison, Nathaniel Rateliff and NightSweats, Bob Dylan U2,

Allison Russell and Brandi Carlile.

Classic tracks from Mellencamp and Springsteen, John Fogerty, Colin James, Queen and Bowie, BB King and Eric Clapton, Toots, Bahamas, and Cedrick Burnside. Leslie Feist. Corb Lund and Jerry Rafferty!!

Live tracks from Tedeschi Trucks, Sheryl Crow, and Joan Osborne.

And we remember the life and songs of Richard Manuel of The Band.  Lost on this day in 1986.

Richard Manuel’s is the first voice you hear on the first Band album Music from Big Pink. After a Robbie Robertson guitar intro that sounds as if it’s being fed through Garth Hudson’s Lowry organ at its most distorted, his aching baritone launches into the first reproachful line of `Tears of Rage`. As it arches over `arms`, you can’t help thinking of Ray Charles, the singer who more than any other shaped this unlikely white soul voice from Stratford, Ontario. And by the end of the first chorus you realize why, in an almost unspoken way, Manuel’s fellow Band vocalists Levon Helm and Rick Danko always looked upon him as the group’s `lead` singer.”
–Barney Hoskyns

Mulligan Stew Feb 25th 2023-Special Guest David Landreth

hello

There’s really no such thing as an overnight success!

Dreams can be experienced but it takes the work of time to find the crossroads between dreams and reality.

The Bros. Landreth dreamt of making music, just like their Dad Wally in Winnipeg.

Wally wanted that too because he kept spinning vinyl at home,  like a music teacher. But no schlock..only the good stuff.

Little Feat, The Eagles, Neil Young, CS&Nash, and Bonnie Raitt.

Years later the Brothers are playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival when they were approached by the headliner – none other than Bonnie Raitt.

She asked if they would send her songs to record because they reminded her of her friend Lowell George from Little Feat.

David and Joey Landreth wrote and rejected many songs. They felt they weren’t up to Bonnie’s standards but eventually – again years later – they sent a song they had recorded Made up mind.

Just so happens it’s the same song Bonnie heard them play and she said – that’s the song.

Two years later the boys hear from friends in Nashville that Bonnie is recording that song and then she makes it the first single off of Just Like That.

Both album and song go on to win Grammys this year and The Bros. Landreth has become “a thing”.

Here’s a discussion with David Landreth about those Grammy moments and the rest of the story.  Well done boys.

Congrats Wally!!

What a win for Bonnie and great music.

New music from Michael Kaeshammer, Andy Fairweather Low, Eilen Jewell, Marcus Mumford

Also – Harry Nilsson, Dave, and Phil Alvin, The Blasters, Dionne Taylor, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Sarah McLachlan

And a moment in time when Bob Dylan stood in front of a stage as an 18 years old and watched a 22-year-old Buddy Holly perform his last show. (Plane crash three days later)

As Bob tells it, Buddy was also watching him and when Bob later wrote and recorded  the LP Time out of Mind  he felt “Buddy was in the process with me”

So we’ll play them back to back to back and see what transpires.

Enjoy!!

Mulligan Stew Feb 11th 2023- Terry Wickham-The state of Folk Music Festivals in Western Canada

hello

Some strong themes in this edition of The Stew.

Terry Wickham, long-time Producer of Edmonton Folk Fest responds to the possible demise of the Vancouver Folk Fest and how it may affect other Western Canadian Festivals.

He also talks about the state of today’s touring industry. Off stage and on.

Let’s face it, music production and essential business are changing rapidly. Artists are finding new and creative ways to make a living and extend their careers. Will your favorite festival still be up and running by the Summer? Have a listen.

We salute Sheryl Crow’s Birthday ()1952)

And songwriter Jerry Goffin, who with his then-wife Carol King wrote a lot of hits in the ’60s.

Natural Woman – Aretha

One fine day – Chiffons
Up on the roof – Drifters

Oh. And we start The Stew with Ray Charles – because on this day in 1959, he recorded What’d I say and he closed every show of his career with that song.

There’s some great new music from Michael Kaeshammer, Rory Block, Peaches, and Quiet, Ron Sexsmith &  Eva Cassidy.

A rare recording of Ry Cooder and David Lindley and their son and daughter live on stage at Vienna Opera House.

They lay into Mercury Blues.

There’s a segment when we go back to Winterland Ballroom in SF and relive the medley that Dylan and The Band finished The  Last  Waltz with.

Sublime!

Heads UP – Next week’s guest is BOOKER T JONES. The heart and soul of Stax Records. (25TH at Jack Singer)

And in two weeks

David Landreth about the Bonnie Bump The Bros. Landreth’s career is having!!
