Mulligan Stew March 9th 2024-Spring Songs

hello

Fair to say we’re all watching for signs of Spring. Daylight saving Sunday morning is one.
We’ve got early flowers on Vancouver Island.
(What’s your first sign you watch for?)
I found lots of Spring songs. Most were ballads,  which is not exactly Saturday night music.
But I did find Bahamas, Vampire Weekend, 2 Beatle tracks, Ron Sexsmith, and Nathaniel Rateliff.

Live tracks from Van Morrison, Traffic, and Fred Eaglesmith.
There are great new songs from Kasey Musgrave and the amazing Teddy Swims.
Classic tracks from U2, Beach Boys, Clash, Johnny Cash, and Waterboys.
Two songs with the same title but very different songs – Deeper Well.
And because they’re being remembered on stages in Edmonton on Saturday night got some Linda Ronstadt and Everly Brothers.
We remember the release of John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan. Acoustic Nashville music right in the middle of the Beatles/Stones British Invasion.
We play Bob, Kris Kristofferson and Duke Robillard.

Just a last-minute addition to the weekend..

Grant Lawrence (The Smugglers, CBC Podcast, multiple best-selling books) is on the road with his Stories and Song LIve.

Grant and Joel Plaskett, Ashleigh Ball, played Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney by the Sea north of Victoria Thursday night.

Friday on Galiano Island and Saturday in Maple  Ridge with his love  Jill Barber added.

We met at The Five and Dime Diner across from the venue and talked for 20 or so minutes about EVERYTHING.

He told the story of two teens,  Grant and Nardwuar knocking on my front door Halloween night to ask questions about their favourite bands. I did the best I could and sent them along with extra promo records. Grant still has his.

We’ve been friends for 36 years. That’s the kind of podcast this will be.  Corey Woods (Associate Producer) shot it on video as well..so it’s also on terrydavidmulligan YouTube channel.

Do the clock thang!!!

Mulligan Stew March 2nd 2024 – Feels like a celebration – for Jeff Healey & March!

hello

It’s just a first step into another month but the possibilities are endless.

Warmth, Spring, longer days, lighter brighter footwear,  all things going green.

The Stew brings two hours of the promise  of March

And a remembrance of Jeff Healey, who died March 2, 2008. The day he lost his battle with cancer.

Blind almost at birth,  Jeff learned the secrets of playing guitar when he decided to lay his guitar down on his lap and literally attack the strings with all fingers.

Our guest is Roger Costa who’s the co-administrator and archivist of the Estate of Jeff Healey.

Currently, he’s producing See the Light. The Jeff Healey Story.   All these years later,  still an amazing story.

We surround the brief interview with new music from Dan Mangan, Corb Lund, and former Carolina Chocolate Drops bandmates Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens.

We start The Stew with All Over Now by Rod Stewart and Faces and 2 hours later finish The Stew with the same guys. Both tracks live and both on vinyl.

  • Lou Reed,
  • Taj Mahal

  • Tedeschi Trucks
  • Bonnie Raitt
  • Paul Butterfield Blues Band,

Mulligan Stew Feb 24th 2024- Corb Lund and Wyatt C Louis Guest on a 90 minute Stew

hello

Corby brings new, acoustic, live off the floor music in his new album El Viejo (The Old One) in memory and tribute to his pal Ian Tyson.

Corby says that this album may be his best yet.  I completely agree.

He brings memories of Ian and their time together.  Corb also shares his thoughts on how his audiences are different depending on where he’s playing and how the songs of Alberta and cowboy life are received in the rest of Canada, The US and Japan.

For El Viejo Corb and the Hurtin’ Albertans played live, letting the songs reveal themselves. It was all captured by CKUA Alumni Scott Franchuk.

Corby describes it as “organic”.

We talked about his name “is that the name of the band?”

Touched on  his time with The Smalls and how this music connects to those days. “half urban/indy and half cowboys/ranchers”

We touched on Hearts on Fire Michael Barclay’s book on “6 years that changed Canadian music” which in its promo mentioned cowboys who used to play speed metal.

“the alt-country music in the late 90’s and 2000’s was littered with x-punks who suddenly discovered acoustic guitar.”

That’s Corb. The Poet Laureate of the Albertan people.

March 5 Corb is in Vancouver at The Orpheum

March 7 Grey Eagle Calgary

March 9 Midway Edmonton

March 22 Zankel Hall / Carnegie Hall NYC

May 28 Amsterdam

And multiple dates in Europe with The Dead South.

FYI – The MS Podcast is the whole conversation – it has some very interesting exchanges, opinions and storytelling.

And the video version can be seen and heard on the Terry david Mulligan YouTube Channel.

Hour Two in this week’s Stew is actually only 30 minutes long.

I’m going to be talking to singer/songwriter Wyatt C Louis.

Wyatt then takes the Cold Bones Stage at 6:30.

There is so much promise in his music and voice. His songs are thoughtful but best of all memorable.

The most interesting music I’ve heard in a while. See if you don’t agree.

Wyatt’s new album “Chandler” is released on May 24.  He’s touring with William Prince on

Monday, Feb 26 N/Jube

Tuesday, Feb 27 S/Jube

Wyatt is nehiyaw (Plains Cree)

From Montana First Nation in Maskwacis (Treaty 6 Territory)

By the way the C in Wyatt’s name is “Chandler” and thus the album title.

Mulligan Stew Feb 10th 2024-Special Guest Alan Doyle- New Album ‘Welcome Home’

hello

Feb 9th Alan Doyle releases his next album Welcome Home

Feb 10 he guests on Mulligan Stew

“I have always struggled with the middle ground. I love playing live so much and I have rightly been accused of writing songs more for concerts than albums. Most people who come to my shows want that kind of night out. So, I have overlooked the lower and slower: The lower part of my vocal range and the slower songs. I’m letting myself do that for the first time on this record.”

Alan’s 6th solo album and 20th of his career. Alan is celebrating 30 years in music.

He’s been co-writing songs for Welcome Home with Donovan Woods, Jimmy Rankin and actor Oscar Isaac.

Alan starts a 45 night  North American tour Feb 20 with 2 nights in Kelowna.

Feb 29 – Edmonton  Northern  Jube

March 1  Calgary  Southern  Jube

March 9  Massey Hall

And, of course

May 8 – Knuckleheads Saloon Kansas City (Alan Explains)

Alan Doyle is a first-class storyteller who takes us through the songs and stories.

We talk about Tell Tale Harbour the play he produced.

Also was totally involved in The Tribute to Ron Hynes Album

And he has yet another best-selling book coming.

The beautiful Alan Doyle and his beautiful,  beautiful band charging into 2024. At CKUA

Mulligan Stew Feb 3rd 2024-Tribute to Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens Saturday

hello

I see Rockin’ Roy is also remembering Buddy Holly.

Who better to tell that story?

Buddy, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (JP Richardson) all died in a plane crash Feb 3 1959. They had played the night before in Clear Lake Iowa.

For those who know the name but not the story behind Buddy and Ritchie both these CKUA shows will be a primer.

If you are a fan..all those memories will come flooding back.

Buddy especially wrote about love and romance. He wasn’t as scary as Little Richard and Jerry Lee and had none of the sexy swagger of Elvis but he HAD the songs. The early hits he recorded at the Norman Petty Studios in Clovis New Mexico.

(Barry Allen and Wes Dakus and the Rebels recorded their early hits at Norman Petty’s studio in Clovis New Mexico and came back with tales of amazing Buddy and  producer Norman)

In the late 50’s and early 60’s Buddy’s songs were heard all over the World..

Which is why on their first records,  The Beatles and The Stones included Buddy Holly covers.

Buddy was 22

Bopper 28.

Ritchie was only 17

Ritchie Valens was the first star to make Chicano rock music. He had only been releasing hits for less than a year but would be huge. Driving the hit bus was La Bamba.  Another was the Leiber-Stoller song Framed with Carol Kaye on bass and Earl Palmer on drums.

The Stew is going to play tracks from Ritchie and Buddy plus bands influenced by these artists.

*Footnote…

Buddy’s bassist gave up his seat on the plane to a sick Big Bopper. His name is Waylon Jennings.

And the night  Buddy sang in Clear Lake,  standing right in front of him watching his every move and listening to every note was a very young Bob Dylan. Dylan still talks about that night and that singer.

Also on Saturdays “Stew” The first-hour donor had a short but fine wish list. Taj Mahal, Susan Tedeschi and Los Lobos.

They are fully covered. Including Taj and Los Lobos together plus  Susan and Tedeschi Trucks jamming with Taj in a dressing room – Taj was teaching TTB his version of Leaving Trunk. It’s simply electric.

New Music from

  • Mark Knopfler
  • The Strumbellas
  • Pretenders
  • Celeigh Cardinal
  • Adrian Sutherland
  • Bahamas
  • The Black Keys
  • Robbie Robertson

Come on – turn it UP

Mulligan Stew Jan 6th 2024-Looking back and forward Plus Celebrating THE FLYING V

hello

We hope you all had a memorable and warm Christmas/New Years season.

The first show of 2024 will celebrate several careers & salute a true rock guitar. Gibson’s Flying V

First is Les McCann who passed Dec 29.

Les kicked down the walls of jazz and opened it up to a whole new audience

He started a groove movement with one great single Compared to What?   An anti-war song you could dance to.

He was much more than one song. Discover him for yourself.

The second career we salute is Lou Rawls who closes the show singing harmony with his pal Sam Cooke.

Our two RAM monthly donors contributed to the mix.

One wanted Jimmy Smith’s Walk on the Wild Side, which I gladly played,  followed by Tower of Power and a newly discovered Squibcakes and the second RAM requested In My Life.  Johnny Cash did the honours.

New music from Arkells, Willy and Keith, Allison Russell, Matt Anderson, Taj, Bruce Springsteen, Celeigh Cardinal, Devin Cuddy & Corb.

A donor birthday double shot of U2(with BB King) and The Hip.

AND THEN – To celebrate the launch of Gibson’s Flying V Guitar on Jan 6 1958

With the email help of Collin Cripps from The Cuddy Band & Blue Rodeo I got a crash course in who played the Flying V over the years.

Albert King played an original 1958  Flying V  throughout his career, as did Lonnie Mack.

The Flying V was also played by Jimi, Keith Richards, Eddie Van Halen,  Slash, Joe Bonamassa, Tom Petty, David GoGo and in the early 70s Neil Young.

An original Flying V now is worth at least half a million. More if it’s in the original case and they both look good.

Joining in the celebration

Albert King –  Crosscut Saw

Lonnie Mack –  Memphis

Neil Young – Southern Man

HEADS UP – Next week’s very special guest is Drummer and Legend Russ Kunkel. Currently a member of The Immediate Family. (the documentary is screening now)

The new album coming out Feb 16  Skin in the Game.

Working and touring with Cat Stevens, Joni, Linda Ronstadt, Lyle Lovett,  Neil Young, Bahamas, Dylan Graham Nash, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, BB King, Bill Withers, Aaron Neville, Warren Zevon, The Derek Trucks Band, Rod Stewart, Steven Stills, Joe Cocker, CSN, JJ Cale, Jimmy Buffett, Bonnie Raitt, Tony Bennett ……… and he’s on the next Dylan Album. Coming later this year.
