Mulligan Stew Feb 26th 2022- Special Guest Keb’Mo’

hello

I imagine my delight in having Keb’ Mo’  Zoom guest from his home in Nashville.

Keb’s new album is Good to be. It reflects the loss of his mother, returning home to his childhood home in Compton to remodel and freshen up the home he was brought up in and to reconnect with “the community”.

I never thought of Compton as a community because everything I read and heard only referenced the toughness of the streets and what could be a hard life. (NWA!!)

Keb references and hangs with The Compton Cowboys. Real-life people. Legends in  Compton history.

Keb also talks strongly about his thoughts on  Black History Month, working with Vince Gill, Old Crow Medicine Show, covering a song by his friend Bill Withers and more.

He answers the last question straight up – Did you find the blues or did the blues find you?

The complete audio and zoom interview drop right after The Stew.  Details  at www.mulliganstew.ca

It’s good to be a Keb’ Mo’ Fan. The music sticks to your heart and so does the man.

and Hey!  Check out the rest of the Stew.

Leonard Cohen, Steve Miller Band, The Dead, Robert Plant, A Fats Domino mini-festival for his birthday, Fruit Bats, Blue Rodeo, Lucinda Williams, Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin etcetera!!

THANK YOU

Mulligan Stew Feb 19th 2022-Special Guest Paul Janeway

hello

Does anyone remember the moment a couple of years ago at the Edmonton Folk Fest when Paul Janeway left the Broken Bones blasting on stage and took his microphone into the audience and walked halfway up the hill?

He’d still be going but the mic stopped working.

It’s the kind of thing a firebrand preacher might do. That’s part of Paul’s childhood in Alabama.

He didn’t hear any popular music on the radio until his late teens because he and his family only listened to gospel stations.

Paul claims his gateway drug into secular music was early Tom Waits. Good Call.

We talk about the Edmonton Folk Fest, finding his voice, Paul talks about Oasis Pizza. That’s the routine they go through backstage just before they go on.

He talks about how he transforms into St Paul as he walks out to the mic and also fills us in on his best friend and co-founder/bassist  Jessie Philips.  Jessie’s hometown isn’t Birmingham, Alabama. It’s Fernie, BC.

Paul also proudly brings their new album  The Alien Coast. That’s where they all live – on The Gulf of Mexico coastline. Early explorers called it The Alien Coastline.

It’s not exactly the same R&B band you may have fallen for.  The groove is still there but the lyrics reference classic art and painters, dream state content, etc.

All this plus 2 hours of hand-picked tunes.

New tracks from John Mellencamp (with Bruce Springsteen), Bahamas,  Taj and Ry,  Matt Anderson, Walk off the Earth, Aaron Neville, next week’s guest Keb’ Mo’.

The complete Interview with Paul Janeway – with tracks – can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast. Also available on video. Details at www.mulliganstew.ca

FYI – Next weeks Podcast features Keb’ Mo’

Mulligan Stew Feb 12th 2022-Special guest Shawn Hall

hello

“The Harp” Shawn Hall joins me for a glorious walk through the new live album  Live at The King Eddy by The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer. (And our pal Dawn Pemberton is a wonderful part of the mix)
All of the beautiful noise at The King Eddy was captured  3 years ago by the legendary Rolling Stones Mobile.
(Led Zeppelin, The Who, Dire Straits. Bob Marley Live, Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers, etc)
Complete interview on Mulligan Stew Podcast. Video on YouTube
Also, a donor asked for All along the Watchtower but didn’t specify which of the many artists who’ve covered Dylan’s classic.
So we played “a few” to start the show.

Playing for change (Neville Family)

Ritchie Havens

Brothers and Sister with Merry Clayton

Bob Dylan

Also a donor suggestion – they were making plans to go to London for concerts, etc but COVID delayed plans so….we play live tunes recorded in London…

Carole King

The Beatles

Amy Winehouse

Leonard Cohen

Elton John

Enjoy and Happy Valentines

Mulligan Stew Jan 29th 2022-Featured guest Joey Landreth

hello

As you know,  I’ve had the honor and giddy pleasure of following Holger’s  2 hours of Natch’l Blues for 27 years.

The majesty of The Blues has a profound effect on The Stew. This week, for example, I started thinking about how new life was breathed into the blues by the British Invasion of the mid-’60s.  Blues artists who were ignored or taken for granted in America could find a new audience in Europe and especially the UK.

That new audience included teen-aged members of The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Led Zeppelin, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Jeff Beck., Rod Stewart, Steve Winwood, etc.  When those young Brits refashioned the blues into blues rock, the music world shifted into high gear and turned the volume up to 10.

America got its own music back.  It was reimagined and very exciting.

Back to Back Laverne Baker and The Animals doing See See Rider

Back to back Muddy Waters and The Stones.

Steve Winwood – Gimme Some Loving

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss – Bobby Moore’s Searching for my baby

Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart – Willie Dixon’s  I ain’t Superstitious

Throw in some donor-requested Fats Domino / Wilbert Harrison and we’re Off and  Running.

New music from Courtney Barnett, Brandi Carlile, The Lumineers, Corb Lund,  The Fretless, and Dan Mangan!

And we finish with

Tower of Power, Gerry Garcia Band doing The Temptations, Cat Stevens, William Prince, Dylan, etc.

And our feature interview guest is Joey Landreth from The Bros. Landreth.

Joey and brother David grew up in a house in Winnipeg where their musician Father played Little Feat, The Byrds, CSN  etc.

Joey’s new solo album is called All that you dream and is a tribute to Lowell George and Little Feat.

The whole two hours has the jam to lift your spirits.  You in?

Write me – [email protected]

Mulligan Stew Jan 15th 2022- Ronnie Spector Tribute

hello

Ronnie Spector has left the stage. Gone but never forgotten.  Leaving Ronettes hits like…

  • Be my baby
  • (The best part of) Breakin’ Up
  • Baby, I love you
  • Timeless.

It’s where Brian Wilson went to cool school. Amy Winehouse was pure Ronnie. From the hair to the sound.

Huge, raw voice. With an attitude. But one of the nicest people you could ever want to meet.

We start The Stew with a track you may not have heard before.

It’s Ronnie Spector singing lead vocal on Billy Joel’s Say Goodbye to Hollywood with the E Street Band. The song and the singer helped to raise some cash so Bruce Springsteen could continue his climb to the top.

All the strings were pulled by Miami Steve van Zandt.  We start with the story than the song.

Check out the REST of The Stew in our playlist below…

Mulligan Stew Jan 8th 2022- Happy Birthday Elvis and David Bowie! (Special Guest-David Bowie)

hello

When you think about the history of popular music – especially Rock & Roll, the names of Elvis Presley and David Bowie are always at the top of the list. Amazingly, they were born on the same day Jan 8  – Elvis in 1935 and David Bowie 1947.

I thought it was time to have a listen to artists influenced by both.

Everyone has a little Elvis in them. From The Clash to Bruce Springsteen. Bowie’s influence wasn’t just with words and music. David showed that you could write and become a character.  Then change that character every several years. Elvis stayed Elvis right up to the end. Bowie was constantly changing and bringing his fans along with him.

The feature includes artists influenced by both.

For Elvis  – Paul Simon, Ry Cooder, Billy Cowsill, Clapton, Norah Jones (Little Willies), and  Bob Dylan.

For David Bowie – Queen, Mott the Hoople, Peter Gabriel, Natalie Merchant, Rickie Lee Jones.

PLUS

And I found a small portion of a much longer interview I did with David Bowie many years ago. (Thanks to Duke for the audio save)

Bowie talks about leaving his characters behind, his first impressions of touring the USA, and whether his fans have followed him through his various personas.

The Mulligan Stew Podcast is Brent Butt…who has hit the stand-up road again.

Jan 20 in Canmore and the 21st at the Arden.

The Zoom recording can be seen on the Mulligan Stew YouTube Channel as well. Click the tab at the top of the page

Mulligan Stew Dec 31st 2021- Goodbye 2021… Hello 2022

hello

For me…2022 will be about trying to find “balance” in my life.

Between my love of what I do and the complete love of my growing family.

So, to start a brand new year, after two chaotic ones, you and I start with a playlist that’s balanced.

Between tracks and artists that made an impression on a lot of people and tracks that pull the heart.

Between music for meal prep and music to prime the New Years Pump.

I went back to the years playlists and the songs that jumped out at me made the list.

Thank you and be safe and enjoy your 2022.

-TDM
