Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew June 26th – Special Guest Leeroy Stagger

hello

This week’s very special interview guest is Leeroy Stagger bringing with him new music from his forthcoming album Dystopian Weekends.  Leeroy lets us know that unlike the last two albums he made for wider audiences. This one he made for him. Leeroy also talks about hosting Dirty Windshields on CKUA. It got him through the lockdown. Dystopian Weekends captures the sound of early Byrds, Clapton, Laurel Canyon.

Two stand-out songs – Buffy’s song Greedy Guts and Black Teenagers.

That last song deals with the headlines this very weekend. The Floyd George Murder.

Full disclosure – I jumped the gun on the release date. It’s not coming out until well after Summer but as Leeroy says “the whole model of what is an album release has changed. Given Covid, lockdown, and technical innovations it’s a whole new format. So, run with it.”

The complete interview can be heard on The Mulligan Stew Podcast. Right after the show.

The Festival Radio Series launched last week and it airs during the first 30 minutes of The Stew  –   so this is our second 90 minute Summer Show!

Those 90 minutes become very important.

If you check the playlist below you’ll see we start with the co-host of Festival radio Dawn Pemberton. She’s a sanger!!

Some “Live Butter”

Curtis Mayfield

The Band/The Byrds/Fats/Robert Plant/iskwe & Tom Wilson/Dusty/Beatles/Tony Bennett and k.d.lang.

Also a Frank Zappa Live album Zappa 88: The Last U.S. Show and the haunting doo-wop ballad Love of my Life.

Frank and I got to be pretty good friends.  I did maybe 6-8 interviews with him. The last was in his Laurel Canyon house. With young versions of Moon Unit and Dweezil running through the room.

The walls were lined with 1-inch recording tapes..100’s of them. Each one a concert performance from somewhere. He was the best interview in rock – but you had to be prepped and ready because you were dealing with a very sharp mind and a bone-dry sense of humor.

Here are two shots of Frank and I.

Me. Clean shaven and me years later – all hair. Frank was Frank.

Here’s to Frank Zappa.  Truly gifted and one-of-a-kind.

Mulligan Stew June 12th 2021- Taking it to the Streets

hello

Terry Wickham joins us in Hour Two of The Stew with background on Taking it to the Streets.

It’s a re-think from the Edmonton Folk Music Festival team.

Local music fans, who have space for artists to play in (Backyard, cul-de-sac,  your street,  patio etc.) can apply to host local artists with controlled audience numbers.

Terry Festival Producer of EFMF  says the response has been really good.

They’re looking forward to taking the music out of the festival setting and onto the streets. Best of all it’s featuring  Edmonton artists.

Terry tells us how to apply if you want to host an artist and what size audiences may be in play.

Applications are open for Edmonton-area residents to host a street concert and enjoy the sounds of the folk fest with their neighbors from the comfort of their own front yards. Artist fees, programming, and production are covered by the festival – hosts just need to step forward to organize their street with neighbors. Information, guidelines, and forms can be found at www.edmontonfolkfest.org. The deadline to apply is June 30.

Playlist highlights include New Music From

AND

And at the end of the first hour a demo single from my pal Jim Foster.  It’s an instrumental called “What?”

Next week we start The Stew half an hour later as the Festival Radio Specials kick at 430-5-30pm. MST

Mulligan Stew June 5th 2021- Juno Weekend Special Guest-Bruce Cockburn

hello

It’s June AND  the Juno Weekend.

We welcome back Bruce Cockburn.

Order of Canada. Songwriters Hall of Fame. Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Winner of 13 Junos.

He won the first-ever folksinger of the year Juno (Joni was nominated) and 50 years later is nominated this year for best instrumental album Crowing Ignites.

Bruce and I cover some of those 50 years. See what’s changed along the way. For him, the music and the Junos.

He allows us to play – for the first time anywhere – a new Demo called On a Roll.

Bruce comments on the sad state of what passes for today’s radio, how he stays engaged with folk music (he doesn’t), and a compelling comment on the tragic events taking place at The Indian Residential School  in Kamloops, BC.

The complete interview can be heard  right after The Stew Radio on Mulligan Stew Podcast (Subscribe to Spotify. Google play. Apple Podcasts)

Mulligan Stew May 22nd 2021- Happy Birthday Bob Dylan!

hello

Bob Dylan turns 80 years on Monday.

For the many who have lived their lives inside his songs, that, in itself, is a flag they carry high.

Bob Dylan defies description. Always has.

One way to get a clearer picture of the man and his many songs, thoughts, words, and music is to talk to the artists who have played with him or were his peers or followed Bob into a life of music.

This week’s guests on Mulligan Stew include:

David Bowie – on the judgement of Bob’s generation

Robbie Robertson – what did the Band learn from Bob and Bob from them.

Colin Linden – toured in Bob’s band.

The Avett Brothers – playing The Grammys with Bob and Chimes of Freedom LP

Barney Bentall/Steve Dawson – all about Blood on the Tracks

Susan Tedeschi- Derek Trucks – on their two heroes,  Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan.

Plus great tracks from Bob.  Thank You for a memorable 80 years, Bob!

Hour ONE has

Mulligan Stew May 8th 2021- Over I Million raised for CKUA. We celebrate with 2 hours of your music!

hello

The CKUA spring fundraiser was a huge success. Met and matched  the 1 Million Mark Sunday dinner time.
Everyone – donor audience and staff – took several days to reset and here we are, back in  our places and spaces.
After two weeks of talking, I am seriously committed to numbing the mouth and playing all the songs and artists you wanted to hear and I wanted to play.

Many Thanks to all you donors  from myself and Allison Brock ( Wide Cut Country)  for taking us to the top.

FYI – Last Sunday between 3-6 pm you raised almost $100,000.  Yowza.

So here’s two hours of almost non-stop music that you asked for in your donation and several that I  wanted to play for you and ran out of time. As we said on the Sunday

Mulligan Stew April 17th 2021- Special Guest Greg Keelor

hello

Mulligan Stew April 17, 2021 – in the middle of a pandemic.

The very special guest on this week’s Stew is Greg Keelor!!

Co-Founder, co-Singer, co-Writer of one of Canada’s premier bands Blue Rodeo. Share the Love is his 6th solo album.

When asked did he know how many he has done and what the names are the answer was No.

And that was the first question. I had another 45 minutes of questions. Now what?

Greg spun his first story about he and Jimmy Bowskill sitting around, in a hash haze throwing lines and guitar licks back and forth and all of a sudden there’s an album taking shape.

They recorded it and went to a small community center at a lake to play the songs again while video cameras shot the songs for promo.

THAT recording was so good, they scrapped the studio record and went with the community hall by the lake session.

That was Greg’s answer to the second question…and we were off and running.

We cover a lot of ground with Greg Keelor..ups and downs.  Losses both human and personal.

The album is very good. His best work yet. We both agreed that the feel of the record was much like the late ’60s in LA with Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds.

He’s a good man that Greg Keelor.

And hello Jimmy Bowskill!

Mulligan Stew April 10th 2021-Special Guest – Sook-Yin Lee and new album jooj two for the Spring Smile

hello

The music this week almost picked itself. In celebration of warmth on our shoulders and shots in our arms.

In normal years, we would see more smiles around us but not this year.

So please consider this April 10  Mulligan Stew your official Spring Smile.

Vancouver’s Mint Records yesterday released Soon-Yin Lee and Adam Litovitz jooj two albums

Behind the release, there’s a very personal story – the love and loss between Sook and Adam.

“When we were making the song ‘Wrecking Heart’, Adam and I looked at each other, blown away by this song that was like nothing we’d ever written. It began with a supercharged sonic fragment he made that became the foundation of an unapologetic banger of a song that possessed and moved through us. We blasted it on the stereo, danced and air-guitared to it. Unconsciously, our lyrics seemed to telegraph our separation. “It sounds like a break up song,” he said, much to our disbelief at a time when we were very much together. But life challenges ended up pushing us in different directions. Though separated, we remained best friends, holding out hope that we would make our way back to each other. Adam landed a job scoring a TV series and I worked on our album, incorporating his notes. He said that he looked forward to playing cathartic meltdown live shows with me.
But that was not to be. Adam is no longer here. I believe he exists on other planes, in those who love him, and in our music, in his music, drawings, and writing. With this album, ‘jooj two’, I pick up the pieces of this Wrecking Heart, honoured to share our music.”

– Sook-Yin Lee

Adam took his own life. Sook-Yin patiently takes us through what happened and how it shaped the songs and her life. And yes, even though all this, we share smiles and laughs.

I’ve known Sook-Yin a  long time… I think it shows in the discussion.
