Mulligan Stew May 18th 2019- Jenn Grant and Tariq Interviews, and remembering Bill Coull

hello

A bit of everything this week on The Stew.

Much like other Stews it has a mix of thoughts, people, places and things.
All set to music.

But there’s a melancholy with the host this week.

This week we lost one of the best broadcasters  ever to speak into a
microphone and play what his head and heart willed him to play.

Bill Coull was the heart and soul of CKUA Radio for many years. His jazz
program lifted by spirits and touched my soul.

I knew nothing about the greater part of his life.  Sadly, it’s only now I
get the whole picture in reading peoples comments. It’s like a jigsaw
puzzle. I was missing way too much of the total man.

I did, however, get to listen to one of the very best broadcasters I had ever
heard.

From one curmudgeon to another..I’ll miss you Bill.

In his honour, I’ve included a couple of jazz tracks in today’s Stew.

We have two guests on Saturdays Stew

Quick interviews at the drive-through window with Jenn Grant and Tariq.
Both will be featured in much longer form on Mulligan Stew Podcast, starting
with Tariq – posted this very day. Both have Alberta dates. Jenn this
weekend and Tariq next weekend. And both have new albums. Jenn’s is Love,
Inevitable.  Halfway through writing and recording the album, she
discovered she was pregnant.  Her son is on the road with her now.

Tariq’s is Telegrams.  What’s really interesting is that Tariq lectures on
lyrics and songwriting at UBC.  Is he a student of his teaching? Let’s find
out.

We start with

The Temps, Grupo Fantasma  Van the Man, Paul Simon Live, the amazing Lizz
Wright sings Ray Charles and Thunder Road from Born to Run.

Then four voices

Joey Landreth

Kingfish Ingram (with Buddy Guy)

And Mark Knopfler.

Hour two rips with…

Tommy Castro

The Band and Dylan – Last Waltz

Jackson Browne

Chris Isaak

T Heads

Stevie Wonder

Herby Hancock, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis pay
tribute to Bill Coull

Mulligan Stew May 4th 2019-Colin Linden Interview

hello

Todays special guest – Colin Linden presents Amour in Nashville.

Colin Linden

How was your week?

Mine was spent in off air support for Fundraiser 2.0 at CKUA Radio.

We came up $112,000 short and it was decided to do the first ever follow up Fundraiser.

The total started to build on Monday and never stopped.

The audience “got it” and contributed their donations.

As a result, the Live Stew that we had planned for Today was scrubbed – and I mean scrubbed – and the regular Saturday Stew was set in motion.

The music took care of itself.

AND AN INTERVIEW WITH COLIN LINDEN about his new album Amour.

Colin tells the story behind partnering with Luther Dickinson from West Mississippi All Stars

How he got the stars of Nashville TV to join him in studio and some of the history behind the tunes they covered.

An update on Blackie and the Rodeo Kings new album..

Plus plans FOR the year  2020, Blackie’s  25th year together.

Thanks to the donors wherever you are and the CKUA team that brought everything together.

Mulligan Stew April 27th 2019- Matt Andersen Interview

hello

Matt anderson…

Unbridled joy springs eternal from Halfway Home by Morning. Recorded live off the floor in Nashville, Tennessee, with producer Steve Dawson!

It’s  Matt Andersen’s tenth album  in 20 years.

In the  13 tracks, Matt celebrates  honkers and shouters  soul, roadhouse  rhythm and blues, heartbroken folk, and approachable Americana—

The native New Brunswicker has proven time and time again, on stages everywhere from clubs to theatres, that he’s the genuine article. And Halfway Home by Morning is as honest and compromise free as anything he’s ever done.

Nearly two decades into his career, still armed with his signature room-shaking, heart-quaking voice, Matt Andersen just keeps getting better and better.

Halfway Home by Morning is the sound of an artist doing what he was born to do and doing it with more Joy  than he ever has before.

For example..Saturday night he’s not just playing at the Northern Jubilee Auditorium…he’s also working his way back home to The Maritimes.

One great show at a time.

We celebrate Matt Anderson on today’s Mulligan Stew

Mulligan Stew April 20th 2019-All Vinyl, and Joey Landreth

hello

It’s  an ALL VINYL Easter Weekend Stew with  very special guest Joey
Landreth.Talk about a star on the rise.Winnipeg’s Joey Landreth Friday launched  his second release Hindsight on
Friday.Later this year with his brother David,  The Bros Landreth release 87 their
next album.  Trust me, that is worth waiting for.Just to give you an idea how hot Joey is as an artist, when the album
launched this week he was nowhere near Winnipeg or Canada for that matter.

He’s touring in Europe after having played his way through the USA.

The same thing happened with his solo debut  Whiskey. An almost immediate
response from music fans who heard something very different in his
outstanding guitar playing, vocals that could melt your heart and songs that
stayed inside you.

“Landreth has said that there will be a new The Bros. Landreth album coming
out later in 2019. In the meantime, fans of Joey Landreth will not have to
wait long to bear witness to his stirring solo shows as he embarks again on
a full touring schedule, and he finishes off the final touches on his yet to
be titled new album.

It promises to be a wonderful opportunity to hear the next stage in the
evolution of a truly remarkable artist, one who possesses the rare ability
to connect to people through his melodies, through his lyrics, and through
his riveting performances.”
