Thomas Perrin is the 5th generation of the very famous French winemaking family.

2014 InterVin International Wine Awards

Daenna van Mulligen/The Wine Diva was once again honoured to be one of the judges at the 2014 InterVin International Wine Awards held in Niagara.
They judged close to 1350 wines from 16 countries. and the winner was from BC. John Skinner and Painted Rock
They submitted their 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2010 Red Icon and 2011 . They all earned gold medals. Their 2010 Syrah and 2011 Red Icon were awarded silver medals, and honours went to their 2012 Chardonnay.
In any game that’s called “bringing the goods”..
So, we begin today’s show with Daenna’s reaction to the competition and some standout wines and then John joins us with his reaction to the breakthrough award.

Famille Perrin

and we meet Thomas Perrin… The famous French iconic family winery on this show is Famille Perrin. Represented by the 5^th generation Thomas Perrin
It is no coincidence Famille Perrin is the leading organic wine grower of the Southern Rhône Valley where they occupy the region’s best terroirs. Their values have given them a worldwide reputation for excellence: absolute respect for the soil, a commitment to manual methods and a deep belief that organic viticulture is the only way to express the true essence of the terroir. Moreover the combination of talents within the family ensures the continuation of their unique expertise. Nature and tradition are key to the Famille Perrin way and this approach has continued seamlessly over five generations.
In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame.
The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century.
In 1549 “Noble Pierre de Beaucastel” bought “a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet”.

The Family Perrin.

In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holding. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978…
Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and François, sons of Jacques. But Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, who represent the fifth generation, are ready to pursue this fabulous family history.
Pouring for us today – in Vancouver – Thomas Perrin.
He brings with him the back story of this label and the family.
Thomas was part of the Perrin team that was personally chosen to create Chateau Miravel Rose for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

The Blues are more often than not a blue collar gig, which make it only fitting that the second single from The Crooked Brothers, “Mean Mean Baby” was written on the job. “I wrote the song while on the clock at this old job I had, making deliveries around town,” says Darwin Baker. “Harmonica in one hand and steering wheel in the other. I got the idea after reading an interview with Winnipeg Blues legend Big Dave MacLean, where he was talking about how with the blues you can write a love song, it’s just gotta have a crooked angle to it.” Shot inside the log cabin where the track was recorded, the new video for “Mean Mean Baby” captures the honesty and intimacy of the track.

Available to stream courtesy of Exclaim!, The Crooked Brothers’ upcoming album, Thank You I’m Sorry, is folk music full of left turns. No strangers to wide open spaces, the brothers captured their album in both Winnipeg’s Private Ear Studio, a downtown warehouse recording studio, and a handmade log home in the country. The resulting sound closely reflects their live dynamics. Practically a Crooked Family Variety Act their concerts see banjos, mandolins, guitars, and more taking turns being juggled from brother to brother. Matt Foster’s unforgettably strange voice, inhuman and gravelly deep. Baker’s deft handling of the harmonica. Jesse Matas’ stories and poems turned lyrics. Each having their own style and touch, the arrangements seem limitless, and there’s a refreshing sense that they will never write the same song twice.

Having performed to sold-out rooms at festivals such as Brighton’s Great Escape, and Switzerland’s Spring Bluegrass Festival Willisau, The Crooked Brother’s will take their banjos, beards, and harmonies on tour across Canada beginning in October. There was a fire sale of wineries on the Naramata Bench a couple of years ago.
They were all owned at one time by Lang Vineyards.
One was called Soaring Eagle with a hand carved sign you couldn’t miss.
The Viticulturalist who helped plan the vineyard was Val Tait.
4 years later, she’s now the General Manager, Winemaker and Viticulturalist.
Canadian wine reviewers have taken notice of her unique blends which is why we’ll talk about

Now in its ninth year, the Game and Wild Mushroom Festival takes place October 15 to November 2 with three or four course prix fixe menus at La Buca and Pied a Terre, and daily chalkboard specials at Sardine Can and The Abbey.

Chef Andrey Durbach celebrates fall with special menus at all four restaurants featuring wild, local mushrooms, deliciously rich game meats, and other speciality foods.
“This is my favourite season to cook,” Durbach says. “It’s the best time of the year for mushrooms and it’s also traditionally hunting season. It’s a time of year we turn our attention to foods that are deeply satisfying.”
The fest is a chance to taste the rich, earthy flavours of freshly picked in-season mushrooms—including chanterelle, matsutake, porcini, and black trumpet—and rarely featured game such as red deer, wild boar, and elk.
For the first time, the newly opened The Abbey joins La Buca, Pied a Terre, and Sardine Can in the annual foragers’ and food lovers’ extravaganza, with each restaurant offering unique menu items and wines to accompany them.
It takes special wines to pair with these Fall flavours..Chef’s business partner Chris Stewart has fabulous wines to bring to the table..they’re earthy, beautifully textured and very memorable.

There was a fire sale of wineries on the Naramata Bench a couple of years ago.
They were all owned at one time by Lang Vineyards.
One was called Soaring Eagle with a hand carved sign you couldn’t miss.

The Viticulturalist who helped plan the vineyard was Val Tait.
4 years later, she’s now the General Manager, Winemaker and Viticulturalist.
Canadian wine reviewers have taken notice of her unique blends which is why we’ll talk about

Chef Michael Smith, one of Canada’s best-known chefs is a passionate advocate for simple, sustainable home cooking and an inspiration for families creating their own healthy food lifestyle. For Ziggy Marley, his latest vehicle of expression the album Fly Rasta, represented a galactic sonic journey .
The trip began in early 2013 with a handwritten note by the six-time Grammy Award winner (with his most recent being the 2014 Best Reggae Album Grammy for Ziggy Marley In Concert). He sat in his home recording studio, took out a scrap of paper, and began to think about what would become his fifth solo studio album.

The concept was simple: make a record that was true to himself, and expanded the territories of the traditional reggae sound by exploring new musical spaces. He had brought strands of other genres into his previous albums, but now he was looking further into the musical universe, like the deep-space eye of the Hubble telescope.
Ziggy began work in Spring 2013 and enlisted producer Dave Cooley to join him on the adventure. Recording began shortly thereafter with the help of friends old and new, including The Melody Makers (sisters Cedella Marley and Sharon Marley, and singer Rica Newell); drummers Stephen Ferrone (Tom Petty), Brian MacLeod (Sheryl Crow), Rock Deadrick (Ben Harper) and Motown’s legendary James Gadson; guitarists Lyle Workman (Sara Bareilles), Takeshi Akimoto (Taj Mahal) and Ian “Beezy” Coleman (Burning Spear); bassists Dave Wilder (Norah Jones), Guy Erez (Karmina), Abraham Laboriel (Paul Simon) and Pablo Stennett (Willie Nelson); and keyboardists Zac Rae (Lana Del Ray), David Palmer (Goo Goo Dolls), George Hughes (Sarah Vaughan), Mike Hyde (Burning Spear) and Brian LeBarton (Beck). Fly Rasta, scheduled for release April 14, fulfills Ziggy’s mission by marrying his own distinctive reggae sound with elements of psychedelica, rock, funk, soul and pop, exploring further musical zones with the addition of sitar, tabla and taiko drums. “I’m looking to push the envelope, to challenge myself,” Ziggy explains. “ I have always wanted to travel far beyond the realms of expectations.

Call them “modern standards.” The compositions of the prolific and terrific songwriting team of Jeff and Don Breithaupt are clearly modeled on the classic compositions of that golden age of songwriting represented in the Great American Songbook. Like such role models as The Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart and Cole Porter, these talented siblings devote themselves to the marriage of lovingly crafted melodies and well-honed lyrics, all arranged intricately, then sung by the cream of the crop of the pop and jazz singers of the era.
Don Breithaupt explains: “When Jeff and I started writing together, there were these albums by people like Rod Stewart and Natalie Cole, all doing standards written anywhere from 50 to 80 years earlier. We thought, ‘why isn’t anyone now contributing to that songbook?’ We just thought it’d be fun to come up new material in that vein, and we deliberately used those building blocks.”
”Twelve years of creative collaboration on this concept has now come to full fruition on Just Passing Through: The Breithaupt Brothers Songbook Vol. II. This sparkling new album features a star-studded cast of A-list Canadian vocalists putting their own distinctive stamp on carefully selected material written by the brothers B.
Just check out this elite crew, featuring many Grammy and Juno Award winners, platinum-selling and internationally acclaimed artists: Kellylee Evans, Denzal Sinclaire, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Ron Sexsmith, Jackie Richardson, Heather Bambrick, Marc Jordan, Paul Shaffer, Sophie Milman, Laila Biali, Sarah Slean, Monkey House, Patricia O’Callaghan,
Ian Thomas, and Tyley Ross. Whew!
Don Breithaupt is quick to stress that “this isn’t just one of those ‘special guests’ compilations you see out there. We have been working with a lot of these people for almost the whole period of our collaboration. They have often done other songs of ours live. We have worked very hard at getting the right voices.
“The danger in writing torch song-style material is you end up with too many piano ballads. We were adamant about having at least a half-dozen mid-tempo or fast songs on here. It was so much fun inventing the arrangements and customizing things to the singers. Much of the material was jazzy and theatrical originally, but you wouldn’t put Ron Sexsmith in that setting. So we invented this bubbly acoustic version of what was originally a jazz ballad for him to sing, adding some western guitar.” The result is the delightfully tender “Any Day Now.”
On “Missing Me,” Sarah Slean reaffirms her mastery of the pop-cabaret style on a tune that incorporates gently swelling strings, haunting trumpet and fluent, almost classical piano to sublime effect. Equally gorgeous is Emile-Claire Barlow’s breathy and subtly nuanced take on “Between Me And My Heart.” Light relief is provided by Paul Shaffer’s boisterous version of “Bad Influence,” a very funny horn-fueled ode to a man happily caught in the tender trap —”you’ve got me eating vegan instead of crap.” More sonic variety comes via “Where’s Mantis Evar?,” a cool Steely Dan-inflected track from Monkey House, the acclaimed Toronto combo led by Don Breithaupt. These are just a few highlights on an album devoid of lowlights.
New York City has also been seduced by the charms of the Breithaupt Brothers. In 2009, they took the city by storm with their musical Seeing Stars, which earned standing ovations during its sold-out run at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Similar enthusiasm has greeted multiple Breithaupt Brothers Songbook revues at the famed Joe’s Pub venue featuring such stars as Tony winner James Naughton, Grammy nominee Kate McGarry, Kelli O’Hara, Carolyn Leonhart, and Janis Siegel. Fittingly, Joe’s Pub was the host the U.S. launch of the new album, on Sept. 30.
Jeff Breithaupt has actually been living in the Big Apple since the mid-nineties. There, he crossed paths with Paul Shaffer, a connection that instigated the coup of enlisting the legendary Letterman foil for a rare guest appearance on the album.
Don, meanwhile, recently relocated to Los Angeles from Toronto, and is now in great demand there as a composer for film and television. Fortunately, the brothers are well-accustomed to long-distance collaboration, and songs are regularly being added to the Breithaupt Brothers songbook.
Expect more projects to be cultivated from that fertile source. For now, relax and enjoy Just Passing Through, an album you’re sure to want to have stay a while.

Aurelio Montez Jr – Kaiken Wines Argentina
Aurelio Montes is the son of one of the most prestigious businessmen in the wine industry in Chile. He decided to settle down in Mendoza with his wife and two children to be close to Bodega Kaiken’s subsidiary in Argentina.

Aurelio studied in the Universidad Católica de Chile’s Agronomy program, majoring in winemaking. He then traveled and worked in many areas around the world (Australia, Napa Valley, Chile) and for several other wineries before finally being invited to join the family winery.
In 2011 his family moved to Mendoza to lead the project Kaiken Vina Monte. Since his arrival, Aurelio has experienced new terroirs and winemaking practices including biodynamics, incorporating sustainable practices as the cornerstone of the work of Kaiken.
Kaiken The winery is located in the town of Vistalba. Their wines are made with grapes from farms located in the best wine regions such as Mendoza and Salta Vistalba, Agrelo, Vista Flores and Cafayate. Kaiken Winery brands are Kaiken Mai, Kaiken Ultra, Kaiken Terroir Series, Kaiken Reserve and Brut sparkling Kaiken.
He’s just a great ambassador for Argentina winemaking. Very pleased to have him on the show today.
