Mulligan Stew July 4th 2015- Tay Strathairn/Dawes Interview

hello

Dawes
TwitterFollow on twitter
The title of Dawes’ fourth album refers to one of the sweetest lyrics you’ll hear this year: “May all your favorite bands stay together,” Taylor Goldsmith sings in an affectionate farewell to an old pal. The title could also allude to the way Dawes continue to unapologetically evoke the earnest romanticism and skyward harmonies of classic 1970s Laurel Canyon rock. (In another nod to rock history, the title song has some “Let It Be” piano.) But on their strongest record since their 2009 debut, they inject a brooding guitar jam (“I Can’t Think About It Now”) and some of Goldsmith’s most sweet-and-sour lyrics (“Things Happen”). Rock’s thoughtful past has rarely sounded more vibrant. –Rolling Stone
taystrathairnThe planned shows take Dawes all over North America and Europe from June to October and include festival stops at Bonnaroo, Winnipeg Folk Festival and Xponential Music Festival, stops on Mumford & Sons’ Gentlemen of the Road Tour, dates supporting Hozier and My Morning Jacket. headlining theater and outdoor venue performances and more. Dawes will play alongside several support acts including Blake Mills, Langhorne Slim, The Lone Bellow, Gill Landry, Sam Outlaw, First Aid Kit, John Moreland and others.

GUMBO…from Dr John

TwitterFollow on Twitter
GumboAfter over four years as The Night Tripper, Dr John returned to the music of his native city for his fifth album. Gumbo was a collection of covers of classic New Orleans tunes (including several Huey Smith songs), with Dr John leading a fantastic band consisting of keyboardist Ronnie Barron, bassist Jimmy Calhoun and drummer Fred Staehle, with horn arrangements from Harold Battiste. He himself called it “both a tribute to and my interpretation of the music I had grown up with in New Orleans in the 1940s and 1950s”.

It is often referred to as a corner-stone in New Orleans music.  Produced by the one and only Jerry Wexler
His version of “Iko Iko” managed to break into the Top 40, and it took him from being an underground cult musician to a widely-recognized authority on the music of the Big Easy. It also showcased his dazzling piano skills, which he had never really utilized that much as The Night Tripper (with a few exceptions).
Still today it is seen as one of the crowning achievements of his career.

harp and Axe play the Calgary stampede July 3 Rd at the Palomino and Aug 1 at the Calgary Blues Fest

With a name like the Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, you might be forgiven for thinking that the Vancouver-based duo is some sort of concept group, based on a hypothetical love story between Captain Ahab and Lizzie Borden.’
 Chris Oke, Yukon News

In reality, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a ‘decades-deep blues style’ (Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon), while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy.
The two met and bonded over music while recording a radio jingle. Their memorable name is inspired by a lyric from Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Bobby McGee’ that references the blues harp, (‘I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana’) and ‘axe’, a common term for the guitar.
Their influences range from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary pushing of Jack White and Danger Mouse but their sound is distinctly their own, smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It cuts you to the core. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played.

Mulligan Stew June 13th 2015-Leiber and Stoller

hello

Jerome “Jerry” Leiber and Mike Stoller were American songwriting and record producing partners. Stoller was the composer and Leiber the lyricist.
LEIBERLeiber and Stoller’s initial successes were as the writers of such crossover hit songs as “Hound Dog” and “Kansas City”. Later in the 1950s, particularly through their work with The Coasters, they created a string of ground-breaking hits that are some of the most entertaining in rock and roll, by using the humorous vernacular of the teenagers sung in a style that was openly theatrical rather than personal, songs that include “Young Blood”, “Searchin'”, and “Yakety Yak”. They were the first to surround black music with elaborate production values, enhancing its emotional power with The Drifters in “There Goes My Baby”, and influencing Phil Spector, who studied their productions while playing guitar on their sessions.

JerryLeiber-MikeStoller-Hounddog-bookcoverLeiber and Stoller wrote hits for Elvis Presley including “Love Me”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Loving You”, “Don’t”, and “King Creole”.[3] They also collaborated with other writers on such songs as “On Broadway”, written with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil; “Stand By Me”, written with Ben E. King; “Young Blood”, written with Doc Pomus; and “Spanish Harlem”, co-written by Leiber and Phil Spector. In 1964, they launched Red Bird Records with George Goldner and, focusing on the “girl group” sound, released some of the greatest classics of the Brill Building period.
Leiber and Stoller2
In all, Leiber and Stoller wrote or co-wrote In all over 70 chart hits. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Mulligan Stew June 6th 2015-Rare Tom Petty, The River and the Road Interview & More…

hello

river-and-the-road
For the first that I can remember, I’ve invited an artist to guest on the show two weeks in a row.
Must be some artist..right?
river_roadThe Band is The River and the Road..and they are mighty good.
Their album is called Headlights..
I found John Hayes, bassist for the band and forced him to talk to me and answer searing questions!!
Such as ..
did you all busk together at the beginning?
You’re from the Salmon Capitol of the World – Campbell River?
Differences between Alberta audiences and The Coast?
Does he think they sound like Neil Young and Crazy Horse on Mistakes?
The experience of flying to Australia and spending considerable time playing there.
unnamed (1)unnamed

The other very special musical treat is a very rare piece of Vinyl from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
is a one sided Live Album from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It was meant as a radio Promo release and was issued by Leon Russell’s  Shelter Records in 1977.
It was recorded at Paul’s Mall in Boston when they opened for Al Kooper Dec 12 1976. I was told once there were only 500 copies made. I’ve never heard it being played on anyone’s show before.
This is raw rock from a band about to step into history.
We’re going to play all four tracks..
Jaguar and the Thunderbird Ford –  a Chuck Berry cracker.
Fooled Again – from their first self titled LP..  for most in the audience..its a new song because its only a month old. All Kooper joins them on stage.
Luna – also from first LP
Dog on the Run – over 9 minutes..classic Petty Riffs. Would show up later – rearranged and much shorter – on 1985’s Southern Accents.
Also one really fine found single..its a demo
From Jim Foster – called Radio ON.
Its starts Hour two..
I may keep playing it until it’s the summer hit of 2o15

About the River and The Road…

The River and The Road is a band built on risking new beginnings and telling their stories along the way.
After crossing an ocean, leaving a hemisphere, and a long stint hitch hiking across the American Southwest, singer/guitarist Andrew Phelan made his way to Chicago with the looming need to cross into Canada for work. He had two flight choices—Montreal or Vancouver—and flying west was cheaper. Once there, he found a healthy contest in singer/banjo player Keenan Lawlor, who had been playing around Vancouver for the previous eight months. Keenan had moved across water to forge a new path, but in his case, it was the Georgia Strait instead of the Pacific Ocean. In the beginning the two butted heads, seeing in each other the greatest competition for the attention of an East Vancouver open mic audience. Competition turned to collaboration, busking, and living on scraps together to make their musical existence possible. After several months as a duo, and experimentation with additional instrumentation, they recorded their debut eponymous twelve-track album. In the spring of 2012, the band emerged as a dynamic four-piece with the addition of drummer Cole George and bassist John Hayes.
In their short history as a band, The River and The Road has grown from a busking duo to an internationally touring quartet. Winter 2013 saw the boys working to stitch their name into the musical fabric of Australia, most notably in Sydney and Melbourne. The band has toured extensively across Canada, completing two coast-to-coast tours among many other regional tours. They are currently filling their summer calendar with festival dates and preparing for their third cross-Canada tour this spring in support of their second full length album, to be released Spring 2015 through MapleMusic Recordings.
Tenacity, heart, and above all else, a gripping live performance, the band has no plans of slowing down. Sincere storytelling mixed with strong harmonies, heavy percussion breakdowns and dynamic arrangements, embodies the sound of The River and The Road.

Mulligan Stew May 23rd 2015

hello

Ian Mcleod
The May 23rd  version of Mulligan Stew is a birthday gift from our donor and his family to Ian MacLeod of Edmonton.
Last Saturday Ian turned 70 and his children wanted to dedicate the hour as a thank you for being such a great Dad.
Unfortunately, emails went missing and one didn’t get sent..that one was the most important.
So….this show is a make good..a re-do..a call to arms.
Ian’s daughter Chelsea sent this note..that turned the tide.
Check out the playlist..It’s Ian’s kind of show
Hey TDM, and thank you for doing such a fantastic show every week on CKUA!
“My name is Chelsea MacLeod.  My lovely younger brother, Andrew, passed this email on to me with the message – “I did it last time.  Your turn!”  Ha. Ha.  Anyway, I am thrilled to be in touch with you.  I have long admired your work and your keen and open ear for music of all kinds.
Andrew was in contact with you about supporting an hour of The Stew in honour of my father, Ian MacLeod.
We (my brothers Jon and Andy and my sister Marhea) have done this a couple times before to celebrate my Dad’s birthday.  No other gift seems to top it, so it seemed very fitting to re-vist this again for my Dad’s 70th.
Age is a funny thing and it can seem so arbitrary sometimes – like when discussing music – my father is 70 but he will listen to anything.  You think he might be happy to stay in his comfort zone of the Stones and the Beatles and all those great bands of his era – I mean who wouldn’t be – he grew up with so much great music.  However, as much as he loves those bands still to this day, he is always open to hearing everything and anything new, in fact, he goes out of his way to stay current.  I love this about him.
Every year for Christmas he makes a mix CD for friends and family.  If you heard this year’s CD, you would think he was a teenager!   Again, his eternally youthful relationship with music is totally inspired.
My Dad played for the Edmonton Eskimos for 4 years in the late 60’s.  During that time, he was exposed to R&B from many of his team-mates who came up to Canada from the States to play Canadian football.  I love to hear his stories about the first time he heard the Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, James Brown, Stevie Wonder etc. and how the R&B sounds blew him away.  That music changed his life.
His father, Donald MacLeod, also had a beautiful relationship with music.  My Dad grew up with the sounds of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald and lots of other jazz music my grandfather played on their cabinet stereo record player.  Similarly, I remember every time my Dad brought home a new Michael Jackson record, or Prince, or Whitney Houston, or Al Green, Ray Charles – that music indeed changed my life.
I guess it only makes sense that his four children also have an intense love of music.  On Saturday, during your show, we will all be there to listen and most likely, we will clear away the furniture for a dance floor.  🙂
If I could pick a theme for the night – I would ask for anything with deep soul groove – funk, R&B, blues etc.
Having said that, we trust you implicitly to put together a great hour of music.  Like I said, he LOVES your show.
I am welling up with tears as I finish up this email to you.  Nobody is more deserving of two musical celebrations than my Dad.  It’s hard for me to say with words what an impact this man has had on all of his children’s lives.  He is the most supportive, loving, and caring parent anyone could ask
for.
Thank you for your time and for your commitment to CKUA.  They are really lucky to have you.
Thanks again, TDM!  We are so excited for Saturday night
Take care,
Chelsea MacLeod”

Mulligan Stew May 16th – BB King

hello

King1

“The blues was bleeding the same blood as me.”

-BB King

“When I eventually drop, I pray to God that it’ll happen in one of three ways: Firstly, on stage or leaving the stage, then secondly in my sleep. And the third way? You’ll have to figure that out for yourself!”

-BB King. (He chose Door #2.)

It took several days to record this week’s Stew..
Somewhere between segments 3 and 4..the world lost one of the greatest blues legends  ever..BB King.
I know Holger will pay tribute to BB  but I’m compelled to throw away the last 15 minutes of the stew and pay my respects.
The box set I reached for revealed a long forgotten treat..IMG_3271
The last time I interviewed BB King was 2-18-94..backstage at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver.
The date stands out because it was our son Fynn’s 12th birthday that day.
I also remember that BB was very reflective that day..almost melancholy.
I remember getting Choked up as he talked about “so much more to do”
That was the kind of man he was.Gibson_Lucille
I couldn’t take my eyes off him or Lucille,  his guitar just over his shoulder.
We’ve added a photo of the boxed set I found today and a message that Eric Clapton tweeted out..
I know EC is really going to miss BB – they were  deep friends.
And BB was his teacher. He taught well.
Here’s to BB King and the music he left with us.
Play it. Remember it.
Thanks -TDM

Mulligan Stew May 9th 2015 – Tony Dekker Interview

hello

As a direct result of the spring Fundraiser…I’ve taken it upon myself to make up for all the talking we had to do..
The list below is as much music as I could slam into two hours of CKUA airtime.
Frankly, I think it’s a world’s record or something.
We really only stop once but when you hear who’s on the show I think you’ll understand.
image003
It’s  Tony Dekker. lead singer, writer and driving force behind Great Lake Swimmers.
They have a beautiful new album called A Forest of Arms.
Its filled with hooks and memorable lines and songs you want to covet and keep close.
It also deals with very current social events, such as the proposed pipeline through some of Canada’s most pristine wilderness and First nations territories.
Three of the songs were recorded in the Tyendinaga Cavern and Caves in Ontario..
It’s a game breaker for this first rate band..music that will take them all over the world
But first, they start their tour in Canada..with dates in Alberta
May 29th Edmonton Royal Albert Museum Theatre
May 30th  Calgary  Central United Church

The title, A Forest Of Arms, is taken from album track “The Great Bear,” a song inspired by a trip Dekker took to the northern rainforests of British Columbia in September 2013 with the World Wildlife Fund. It’s a pristine wilderness area that is under threat of being compromised by the construction of a pipeline, and Dekker and the group have been very vocal in their opposition to it. In a broader sense, the title is also a reference to the sense of community surrounding the Toronto-based band, as well as the band’s own growing families, exhibited in the songs “Something Like A Storm” and “Expecting You.”
Great Lake Swimmers consists of Tony Dekker on lead vocals and guitar, long time guitarist and banjo player Erik ArnesenMiranda Mulholland on violin and backing vocals, Bret Higgins on upright bass and newcomer Joshua Van Tassel on drums. There are several special guest appearances on the album by Kevin Kane (Grapes Of Wrath) on 12-string electric guitar, as well as backing vocals on the song “A Bird Flew Inside The House.”
Here’s the western part of the tour

  • 5/26 Regina, SK @ The Excange
  • 5/27 Saskatoon, SK @ Broadway Theatre
