Nathaniel Rateliff

EP 100 | Nathaniel Rateliff

hello

Welcome to Podcast 100!

When Nathaniel began writing for the new album And it’s still Alright, the songs initially centered on the pain of his unraveling personal relationship, but the theme of the album took a different direction when Richard Swift, his longtime friend, and producer of Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ two acclaimed albums, passed away in July 2018.

This time, there’s no Night Sweats riding to the rescue.

While the songs are quieter and more reflective,  they are no less urgent and indelible.  These are strong stories  and even stronger songs

“I’ve always been trying to write songs that hit you in the stomach but I like ones that make people feel like things will be just fine.”

Nathaniel Rateliff

Mulligan Stew March 28th 2020- SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC FOR SHUT-INS

hello

Strange Days my friends.

We hope you are safe, well and settled.
SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC FOR SHUT-INS
All this week I was thinking…
“What can I play that will help lighten somebody’s load?”
We’re all in our encampments trying to get through a tough time but it IS Saturday night.
The two-hour playlist started to take shape from the last song backward.
I saw a video for a Tedeschi Trucks Wheels of Soul tour Live at Red Rocks.
It was a 15 minute medley of two Sly and the Family Stone tracks. The band on stage must have been 15 people. Background Singers..double drums – horns up the wazoo. Wicked guitar duel.
And that’s how The Stew ends.
So. Knowing that was the ending of The Stew,  the start of the show was easy peasy.
Neville Brothers
Amy Helm
Annie Lennox
James Brown
Joe Cocker/Mad Dogs
The Hip
Black Pumas
Stones and CSN Live
Emmylou
Buddy and June Miller
and the final 30 minutes has three artists
A special edit of Tower of Power
Stevie Ray Vaughn Live at Carnegie Hall
And Tedeschi Trucks
Oh…also in the mix a special appearance by Bob Chelmick. The Prince of Poems.

Saturday night music for shut-ins.

FYI. The  100th MulliganStew Podcast features Nathaniel Rateliff

Mulligan Stew March 21st 2020- Special Guest-Nathaniel Rateliff

hello

Welcome one and all …The new normal has quickly gone sideways

The World has checked out and headed home.

I’m thinking that what we could all use right now is – peace, calm and a little music.

All of which can be found at CKUA Radio.  www.ckua.com

This edition of Mulligan Stew features a handpicked line up of music..and a very special guest

Nathaniel Rateliff.

Nathaniel has released  And It’s Still Alright, his first new music in a couple of years.  It’s a Solo album  & very personal. Filled with memories and some pain.

When Nathaniel began writing for the new album, the songs initially centered on the pain of his unraveling relationship, but the theme of the album took a different direction when Richard Swift, his longtime friend, and producer of Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ two acclaimed albums, passed away in July 2018.

There’s no Night Sweats riding to the rescue here.

While the songs are quieter and more reflective they are no less urgent and indelible, as he pushes the boundaries and finds new depths in his songwriting—a singular voice embarking on a personal exploration of love, loss, and perseverance.

These are strong songs if we’re open to the messages.

Nathaniel does a great version of Harry Nilsson.

The complete interview can be found next week on MulliganStew Podcast

Enjoy.

We start with one of the great blues tunes ever recorded

King Biscuit Boy – Done tore your playhouse down, featuring the truly brilliant Richard Bell on piano.

Elvin Bishop – Taj Mahal, Wilco, Tami Nelson kick things off.

BB King with The Crusaders Live and The Crusaders all by themselves.

The Police, Marc Jordan, jj Cale, and Clapton.

We play the very same Harry Nilsson and finish off with

Gil Scott Heron and Makaya McCraven…\

Here we go!!

Takemully care of each other

Mulligan Stew January 23rd 2016-Guests Nathaniel Rateliff and Derek Trucks

hello

We start with a playlist that hopefully speaks to your heart:

  • Boz Scaggs
  • Mary Gauthier
  • Janis
  • RAY Charles Live
  • James Brown at The Apollo
  • City and Colour
  • Howlin Wolf

All the good stuff
And two interview guests.
Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats just played Calgary and Edmonton and we found him at sound check in Vancouver.
(apologies for the roadie belching into the microphones..he’s just doing his job)

Lots to talk about.  For example, last time we talked it was 3 days AFTER he played The Jimmy Fallon show and blew Jimmy and everyone watching away.
He trys to remember the blur since that time..but it means he won’t be playing small clubs ever again.
The son of a preacher, we talk spirituality and whiskey.
And his plans for the next little while.
After Fallon and SOB The Sweats have become one of the hottest acts anywhere.
And we finish by talking about the song that started it all SOB..there’s a dark side in the lyrics.
And one of the nicest people in the music business plus one of the best most distinctive  guitarists working today Derek Trucks.

Along with his wife and partner Susan Tedeschi..they lead a killer band The Tedeschi Trucks Band.
They’re just releasing a new album Let me get by
With tour dates in western Canada  in June.

Besides the new music,  which is yet another shift upward and forward,  Derek also talks about the legacy of his friend  BB King and The Allman Brothers band of which he was a member.
Please look for the RAW interview on our site
Enjoy!!

Mulligan Stew August 8th 2015- Live at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival

hello

edmonton
Today at 5PM…Mulligan Stew is LIVE at the edmonton folk festival..
5-7PM Mountain time. 4-6 Pacific. Streaming live click here: LISTEN LIVE!Screen Shot 2015-08-08 at 9.46.38 AM

Right at 5pm its one of the hottest emerging acts anywhere.
2 nights ago Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats earned and received a standing ovation from the Jimmy Fallon studio audience..for their killer single SOB. (check out the video)

5 years ago Daniel would have shown up as a solo act in edmonton..just a guy, a guitar and his songs.
Now he brings a serious R&B band..with horns, B3 organ and tunes you’d swear came from the golden days of Stax.
Best of all, they kick off the show..right at 5PM.  Don’t miss these guys..
530 brings  the pride of New Brunswick Matt Anderson.
Matt brings the whole package..A voice that can switch from a whisper to a growl.  Complete mastery of his guitar and ever improving songs..the latest from his best LP ever – Weightless.
It seems he’s never not on the road but one of the highlights of his year is playing this festival in Edmonton. Not bad for a guy who has stubby fingers…

Theres a really fine story by Tom Murray in todays Edmonton Journal that details the difficult formative years of EFMF. How they almost went under 30 years ago and how a band of dedicated volunteers and music types pulled together to keep it alive..
They included Holger Petersen & Tom Coxworth from CKUA. Then along came Terry Wickham.who took over leadership and he/they began to build the outstanding event we enjoy today.
Terry Wickham guests right at 6PM.  He brings the stories with him.
630 brings Danny Michel…who, after moving to Belize and recording with local musicians released an amazing album called BlackBirds are dancing over me.
It received so many plays on so many shows that it was declared the album of the year on the CKUA Top 100.
We’re going to talk to him about his latest project – the smaller calmer School Night Mondays at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto. and jamming with astronaut Chris Hadfield.

and then two highlights from last years Festival.
Daniel Lanois and Dan Mangan and Blacksmith

Enjoy!!  tdm
