Mulligan Stew Dec 23rd 2017- Christmas in the Round year Three!

hello

It’s fair to say that Christmas is the most traditional season of the year.

Mulligan Stew has its own tradition we’d like to share with you.

It all started at CBC Vancouver in the late 70s with Producer Susan Englebert.

I was hosting a weekly show called The Great Canadian Goldrush and Susan brought together several of our artist friends to sing Christmas songs and tell Christmas tales.

Shari Ulrich, Roy Forbes, Terry Frewer were all part of those shows.

The show became a tradition – year after year.

Then life happened.  Our friend Susan lost a battle with cancer, Goldrush was canceled and we all moved on.

It wasn’t until I signed on with Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver that the idea of Christmas in the Round started to take shape.

Finally, I had a great mix.

Artists that were attracted to Roundhouse Radio’s support of music and the arts.

And a real working studio..plus a lobby that doubled as a stage. Perfect!!

This is now Year Three of Christmas in the Round.

Shari Ulrich is still part of the group.

( Roy Forbes joined us last year)

This year the lineup is strong. Everyone on the stage had an amazing year. Recording, touring, co-writing and making new friends.

Barney Bentall – had just come off the road with Cariboo Express. Released a fine new album The Drifter and the Preacher and was about to tour coast-to-coast in early 2018 with the  Jim Cuddy Band.

Shari Ulrich – on the road with Barney, playing with other artists, forming a trio with her daughter Julia and fellow Cariboo Expresser  Kirby Barber, who’s also with us this year.

(Julia recorded and mixed this hour)

Jim Byrnes- host of Byrnes Blues with a well-earned reputation as a singular performer, who proudly shows his St Louis roots in every song.

He too has a new album coming out in Feb. – Long Hot Summer Days.

Bill Henderson – Leader, writer, vocalist, and guitarist of Chilliwack. Mentor to many of today’s new artists. Producer and picker.

Craig Northey – Original member of The Odds. Invaluable session man, co-writer, and part of perhaps the best backing band in the Country.

You may notice in the group photo that he’s leaning on a crutch. That’s because he BROKE his ankle playing hockey 2 weeks before this session and he still came to play.

He’s a gamer. A lifer.

Geoff Hicks – Plays drums with EVERYONE – Colin James, Barney, never mind..it’s way too many to mention

Rob Becker – Ditto. Need a great bass player? Start in the B’s with Becker.  Plays with Barney a lot.

They all have Christmas songs and stories and a tradition to carry on.

Many thanks to Cory Price, Julia Graff, Monique McQueen, Alex Rodgerson, Don Shafer, Margaret Garrison, Dave Dhillon, Gabe Reinarz, Julian Anton, Scott Elliott and Duke, Natalie Pitt.

Many thanks to our singers and pickers

And as always Corey Wood and MEG – The Home Team

This show is dedicated to the memory of Susan Englebert

THIS WEEK..

The usual two hours of great music and when we stop to talk..we don’t babble or turn it into a classroom.
Its talk from the heart.
TNile and TDMT Nile was at the Edmonton Folk Festival but I didn’t get a chance to talk to her on air..so we found each other for a follow up.
Her wonderful new release is called Tingle and Spark. Its  very good. A game changer for her.
Co-Producer Matt Rogers from The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer  allowed Tamara to  move away from folk and into a more mainstream feel.
(T says she’ll always be a folkie)
[line]
A number of you let me know that they missed the Edmonton Folk Festival Broadcast and especially the last two guests.
Daniel Lanois and Dan Mangan/Blacksmith.
daniel_lanoisSo..I’m going to recut the Daniel Lanois interview and add some music to it (U2, Dylan, etc)
The RAW interview will be posted here by Corey, so you can get a true sense of the man.
The STEW Daniel Lanois interview RAW
It was amazing to hear him talk about his past and especially his future..(no more studios)
Daniel is considered by a great many people to be one of the World’s best producers.
Lets just  check out the credits
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Lanois [line]
Dan_Mangan_CLR_Vert_HRThe last guest on the show was Dan Mangan and his group of merry pranksters Blacksmith.
Just as we were wrapping up the show I lamented that they brought no instruments so as to play us out..but I did ask if they had any acapella tunes..why YES they did..
So..here’s the tune  right after the T Nile Interview.
OH and one more thing..I somehow got going on a STOP set.  Tunes that had the word stop in the title or the lyrics..Um..I got carried away.
Hope you like it
(If you haven’t already, please add me on twitter)

THE SHOW

Nicolette Novak. The Queen of Niagara. What a delight!!

Nicolette Novak

Nicolette Novak

A lifelong native of Niagara, Ontario, Nicolette is one of the area’s best resources. She always has one ear to the grapevine to uncover what’s new and exciting in the community. Her enthusiasm and passion for what she does has earned her many well deserved accolades as well as many fans among her vast clientele. Time spent with Nicolette is time well spent.
As many people over the years have observed, Nicolette is The Good Earth! Her wit, sense of fun and genuine caring are just some of the ingredients that have made
The Good Earth such a success.
This is her family’s farm. She started the cooking school and then planted the vines..
How many times have you heard chefs and sommeliers say ”combining the grapes and food from the same soil..is the best of both Worlds”
And with Good Earth and Wine she has done just that.
Can’t tell you how much fun this interview was. Hope you like it.

When I left the Naramata bench 2 years ago Stewart Glynes was the chef at Bench Market above Penticton.
Now he’s the chef and Co-owner with his wife Heather . So I thought we’d check back in with the very popular Mr Glynes.
If you’re headed to the Naramata Bench… don’t miss the opportunity to stop and check out where everyone in the wine community hangs out.

….and finally Denis Cotter at Hastings House Salt Spring Island.
Denis Cotter For the Love of Food
Born in Macroom, Co. Cork, Denis worked in banking for eight years before leaving to follow an ambition to work with food. Already a vegetarian, he trained as a cook in the famous Cranks restaurants in London.
Back in Ireland, after a spell in a wholefood restaurant, Denis’ frustration with the limitations of the vegetarian industry sparked the opening of Cafe Paradiso in 1993, to create an environment where he could evolve a personal style of cooking focussed on the pleasure of food rather than the perceived negativity of vegetarianism.
Among the many awards bestowed on Cafe Paradiso, Denis Cotter was voted ‘Chef of the Year ’ by Food & Wine (Ireland) magazine in 2005.

Denis Cotter is also the author of four books. Atrium, an imprint of the Cork University Press, published his first book, ‘The Café Paradiso Cookbook’ in June 1999; and his second, ‘Paradiso Seasons’ in June 2003. The first book was shortlisted for the British Guild of Food Writers Awards. ‘Paradiso Seasons’ won ‘Best Vegetarian Cookbook in the World’ at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Barcelona in 2004, and was shortlisted for the James Beard Awards in New York in 2005.
November 2007 saw the release of Denis’ third book, titled ‘wild garlic, gooseberries & me’ and published by Harper Collins. Giving equal rein to his writing talent and ability to create inspirational recipes, ‘wild garlic…’ was shortlisted for the Andre Simon Awards in 2008.
His latest book, ‘for the love of food’, published by Harper Collins in April 2011, is easily Denis’ most accessible collection of recipes, focussing on home cooking with delicious flavour combinations.
