EP 99 | Virus Crisis in Food and Wine

hello

Welcome. We hope this finds you well and safe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed all of our lives.

Imagine what effect it’s had on the food and wine businesses we know and love.

I reached out to as many owners and winemakers as I could find in a single day in the hope that their answers could become your answers.

The basic questions were

How are you doing and how is your business handling this crisis?

How can we, the consumer help sustain your business?

Suggestions?  Ideas? Are you open and if so, under what restrictions?

Mulligan Stew March 21st 2020- Special Guest-Nathaniel Rateliff

hello

Welcome one and all …The new normal has quickly gone sideways

The World has checked out and headed home.

I’m thinking that what we could all use right now is – peace, calm and a little music.

All of which can be found at CKUA Radio.  www.ckua.com

This edition of Mulligan Stew features a handpicked line up of music..and a very special guest

Nathaniel Rateliff.

Nathaniel has released  And It’s Still Alright, his first new music in a couple of years.  It’s a Solo album  & very personal. Filled with memories and some pain.

When Nathaniel began writing for the new album, the songs initially centered on the pain of his unraveling relationship, but the theme of the album took a different direction when Richard Swift, his longtime friend, and producer of Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ two acclaimed albums, passed away in July 2018.

There’s no Night Sweats riding to the rescue here.

While the songs are quieter and more reflective they are no less urgent and indelible, as he pushes the boundaries and finds new depths in his songwriting—a singular voice embarking on a personal exploration of love, loss, and perseverance.

These are strong songs if we’re open to the messages.

Nathaniel does a great version of Harry Nilsson.

The complete interview can be found next week on MulliganStew Podcast

Enjoy.

We start with one of the great blues tunes ever recorded

King Biscuit Boy – Done tore your playhouse down, featuring the truly brilliant Richard Bell on piano.

Elvin Bishop – Taj Mahal, Wilco, Tami Nelson kick things off.

BB King with The Crusaders Live and The Crusaders all by themselves.

The Police, Marc Jordan, jj Cale, and Clapton.

We play the very same Harry Nilsson and finish off with

Gil Scott Heron and Makaya McCraven…\

Here we go!!

Takemully care of each other

hello

Our special guest is William Prince. Calls Winnipeg home.

Since releasing his first album Earthly Days and its great single Breathless.  Won a Juno for Contemporary Roots Album

(Lost his Father and became a Dad in the same year)

This weekend William is doing three nights in a row a Winnipeg’s East Cultural Centre.

Then its Berlin, London, Dublin, etc.

Kansas City, Boston, New York, New Orleans Jazz Festival, etc..

Enjoy our interview..he’s an amazing guy.

One of This week’s donors suggested an East Coast/West Coast thing.  Put together some WhiteHorse, Harry Manx, Alan Doyle, Stephen Fearing, Joel Plaskett.

New tracks from Roy Forbes, Nuela Charles.

EP 98 | William Prince Interview

hello

Winnipeg singer, songwriter  William Prince has released his second album Reliever.

How far has he come from the first album Earthly Days and its great single Breathless?

Feature appearance on CBS Saturday Morning.  Feature article in Rolling Stone.

Now touring Europe and America.

While writing the songs, for Reliever,  he lost his Father but became a Dad.

Even though William can trace his heritage back to Chief Peguis he doesn’t want his music to be judged as First nations – just judged as great songs. Period!

Mulligan Stew March 7th 2020- Special Guest Frazey Ford

hello

March 7 brings the return of Frazey Ford, although she never really went away. We just kept playing Indian Ocean until the first teaser singles started to show a couple of months back. Sneaky good tracks here with a really fine band. Songs that start low and quiet ended up doing a slow burn   Frazey talks about Azad the lead track. A very personal story about her sister and her family. Same with Purple and Brown. This interview.

It’s not about tour dates or summer plans. Its all about her life growing up with her Hippie draft-dodging parents and her larger than life Mom. I wouldn’t be surprised if Frazey is #1  on the CKUA top 30 albums. We love the person and her music and we’re not the only ones.

Playlist includes Bowie and Queen, Puss N Boots, Alan Doyle and his #1 Country album in Canad (what??) Andy Shaun and Nathaniel Rateliff (who will be a guest in 2-3 weeks)Got some Rory Block, Laurie Anderson, Van the Man Live, New Wood Bros, Tami Neilson back to back with Leeroy Stagger and Rocking Roy Forbes and his new album. Edge of Blue Heads UP. Future guests include William Prince. Nathaniel Rateliff. Roy Forbes.

EP 96 | Gord Sinclair- Taxi Dancers

hello

Special guest Gord Sinclair. Bassist, singer, and songwriter for The Tragically Hip. On Friday the 28th he releases Taxi Dancers the first solo lp following the death of Gord Downie and the end of The Hip. Terry talks about the new album Taxi Dancers and what life is like post Tragically Hip and the emotional journey he underwent to create the album.

EP 95 | Andy Shauf-Neon Skyline

hello

Andy Shauf’s new album The Neon Skyline ..is presented in full storytelling concept.

The interconnected songs were all written, performed, arranged and produced by Andy, and follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up.

Some of his characters can be found in his last album The Party.  All are sympathetic people who share countless inside jokes, shots, and life-or-death musings when the night gets hazy.

It just happens to be one of the best albums I’ve heard in quite a while.  The delight in the songs may not reveal themselves on first listen but the second time..the puzzle starts to show itself.

Please enjoy this chat with a true star in the making…if he wants to go down that road.

Mulligan Stew Feb 22 2020- Andy Shauf – The Neon Skyline

hello

For those music fans who discovered the seductive narrative of  Andy Shauf through his last album The Party, just know that he’s hooked up with three of the party-goers and headed for The Skyline Bar in Parkdale, Toronto.

There’s his buddy Charlie, Rose the bartender and  Judy.

Oh!  His ex is in the bar as well.

You just don’t hear concept albums and certainly not concept songwriting and production at this level.

PhotoCreditColinMedley

Amy van Keeken, who knows a thing or two about songwriting wrote me a note ..

The Neon Skyline is so good. Listening to the whole album start to finish

in one go (like people used to do) adds a deeper level of meaning to the songs and the narrative.  It’s brilliant”

Andy’s buddies Foxwarren are up for a Juno Award March 15 but Andy will be in Bourdeaux on tour.

I’ve asked Andy to leave his acceptance speech with us in our chat.

The rest of our two-hour show features handpicked Saturday night music.
