Ep 69 | The Bros. Landreth Podcast

hello

Aug 17, 2019

Joey Landreth and his older brother David grew up in a total music house in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Father Wally was a working musician, playing gigs and making records with everyone he met. The boys raided the record collection every day..soaking up blues, r&b, jazz and country.

Later, when they both picked up the guitar and started to make music they focused in on The Allman Brothers, Ry Cooder, and Little Feat. The Bros. Landreth won a JUNO for Let it Lie. The album took over their lives for four years of touring. Their latest record 87 is due out this September.

We found David and Joey at the Bear Creek Festival in Grand Prairie, their only Canadian gig this year.  All the other brother performances will be in the USA,  the UK, and Europe.

Mulligan Stew August 17th 2019-The Bros Landreth Interview-dedicated to Monica Miller

hello

This show is dedicated to Monica Miller – fellow CKUA show host.

The Bros Landreth guest on today’s Stew.

We find them at the Bear Creek Festival co-headlining the first of two nights there.

FYI – Those 2 nights are the only Canadian dates for The Bros this year. They are the rest of this year to be road warriors in the USA, the UK, CKUAand Europe.  (Next year, they’ll be back in Canada with a vengeance)

David and his younger brother Joey come from an amazing musical background.

Father Wally was a serious musician in Winnipeg. The house was loaded with instruments and lots of music.

Naturally, the boys picked up guitars and listened to Ry Cooder, Little Feat, all the greats.

That’s why their music has so much soul and depth. Very few bands have had this kind of schooling or were open to it.

And that’s why I believe The Bros. Landreth will be loved all over the World.

They already have the most bizarre profile in the UK  and Europe.  How does a band from Winnipeg get to play in Norway or Sweden or Liverpool?

The Bros Landreth also have an ace-in-the-hole.

It’s Joey and his solo career. Boom. Through the roof. His current album Hindsight has fans jumping on the bandwagon.

After Bear Creek, the brothers are headed for the Americana Festival in Nashville. If anyone can steal a show its these guys.

As for the rest of  The Stew …

EP | 68 The Protest Song Podcast

hello

“The duty of youth is to challenge corruption.”
― Kurt Cobain

The World seems crazy at times. Leading the current craziness is the USA and it appears to start right at the very top.

Having been right in the middle of the 60’s and 70’s musical revolution, lead by the songs of Dylan and voices of Joan Baez, CSN&Y, Bob Marley, etc many wonder if the voice of music is at play today.
Many of the songs we’re playing now were written and recorded during the election process and the many months of Trump in office.  Traditionally there has always been push back from artists. Many giving voice to those who don’t have one.

(The Protest Song Part Two is currently taking shape.  Coming in the Fall.)

It starts with Steven Fearing and his single “Blowhard Nation”

Followed by comments from

Joel Plaskett

The Wood Brothers

Leeroy Stagger

Ron Sexsmith

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings

(Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, Steven Fearing)

Alan Doyle

Bob Rock

Susan Tedeschi

Derek Trucks

Is there is a push back from the music makers? If so, where is it and who is it?
How did the election and presidency affect your new songs?
Is there room for protest songs in today’s music and radio?

Mulligan Stew Aug 3rd 2019- David Hood and Leland Sklar Interview

hello

When you think about certain classic hits or artists

I never loved a man- Aretha

I’ll take you there – Staple Singers

Brown Sugar – Stones

Wilson Pickett – Mustang Sally

Paul Simon – Still Crazy

Etta James – Tell mama

When a man loves a woman – Percy Sledge

You think of the bass player at Muscle Shoals – David Hood

Or When you hear  James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Phil Collins, Lyle Lovett,  Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, Leonard Cohen and CSN and Youngyou think of that bass player – Leland Sklar.  Long white hair and beard.

They’ve never met or been interviewed together.  Until this Saturdays Stew.

Terry found both at the Vancouver Island Music Festival and turned complete fanboy.

Things they talked about

Difference between music’s crazy drummers and bass players.

“we’re the guys who hold the band together..even if the people around us don’t even know we do it.”  David

“we’re the glue.  The liaison between the melodic and rhythmic.”  Leland

Both talked about “how one bass note can change the character in a hit”

Both talked about Muscle Shoals, Booker T and Stax, The Wrecking Crew and the LA session cats.

Leland says of David  “David developed a style of music that defined a locale”

David says  “It’s not just me it’s the rest of the Muscle Shoals guys.  I just keep it simple”

Leland adds “ what’s the least I can do to make this work”

Leland describes being in the studio and putting on his headphones..what he hears is “Barbara Streisand singing in his ears with a full orchestra.”

And most interesting we ended up talking about Miles Davis and –  “the space between the notes”

Ep | 67 David Hood Meets Leland Sklar. From Mustang Sally to Fire & Rain

hello

Aug 3, 2019

This Summer,  In the middle of a rainforest in Courtenay/Comox at the Vancouver Island Music Festival two of the most famous bass players in popular music met for the very first time.

David Hood – from Muscle Shoals Alabama finally met Leland Sklar from Los Angeles.

David  Hood was part of the legendary studio musicians at FAME and Muscle Shoals Studios who shaped some of the most famous hits ever made. For Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones, and The Staple Singers.

In LA,  Leland Sklar has recorded over 2000 albums for artists including Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt and many more.

They hold the unique distinction of being “makers of memories” through the music they helped to create.

Great bass players are the glue that holds the band together.

What makes bass players special?  Memorable bass tracks?

Did they follow each other’s careers?

The key to surviving and thriving for all those sessions, all those artists and those albums?

David Hood meets Leland Sklar..

Ep 66|Remembering Harry McWatters and Gurvinder Bhatia pairs Music and Wine

hello

July 26th

Harry McWatters WAS wine in Canada. He died this week at home in Summerland. He was 74.

He founded the first estate winery, created Okanagan wine festival, same thing with BC Wine Institute.

Harry had a hand in establishing the framework of what is now the Canadian wine Industry.

The first part of our Podcast honors the words and deeds of Harry McWatters.

The second half of the Podcast deals with this weekend’s Interstellar Rodeo Music Festival in Edmonton.

Wine expert Gurvinder Bhatia pairs wines with bands..it’s fascinating and a tonne of fun.

Cheers to Harry
