THE SHOW
Vikram Vij –
Born in India, Vikram left home at the age of 20 to begin his culinary journey abroad. Vikram immigrated to Alberta in 1989 and started work at the Banff Springs Hotel.
A certified sommelier, Vikram opened his first restaurant, Vij’s, in Vancouver in 1994 to great success. A strict no-reservations policy has led to a nightly line-up outside the restaurant doors. New York Times food writer Mark Bittman said Vij’s was “easily among the finest Indian restaurants in the world.” He now operates three restaurants with more in the works and a gourmet food truck in the Greater Vancouver area, and his line of packaged curries is available at grocery stores across the country. The author of two best-selling cookbooks, he won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2001 and is a judge on Food Network’s Top Chef Canada and Chopped Canada as well as CBC’s Recipe to Riches. He’s one of the Dragon’s Den hosts. Thing is we don’t have enough space for his awards..books, deals and press articles but we will say he was just awarded Surrey’s Businessperson of the Year.

Chris Benziger
Still in high school when the Benziger family moved from White Plains, Chris finished his senior year in wine country. He went on to earn a degree in marketing from the University of San Francisco while spending summers, weekends and every spare moment working at the winery. He officially joined the Benziger Family Winery in 1993 as a Brand Manager.
In addition to sales responsibilities, Chris also oversees the home ranch and its many farm related duties, i.e. shepherding the Benziger flock of sheep and cows, tending to the estate vegetable and fruit trees, and producing the Biodynamic preparations for all our vineyards. Chris feels that the only way to communicate the quality of the wines he promotes is by having the soil from the vineyard in which he’s endorsing under his nails. The best impression a winemaker can leave on his wines are his footprints in the vineyards.

Perhaps one of the most overlooked wine regions in France is Languedoc.
Surprising considering it is the single biggest wine producing region in the world, being responsible for more than a third of France’s total wine production. As recently as 2001, the region produced more wine than the entire United States.
It hasn’t always been good times in Southern France..there was a enough wine surplus to create “Lakes of wine”
New producers and new wineries are changing the region..all for the better.

Last year Skydiggers released an EP of Christmas music entitled Angels as part of their 25th anniversary celebration. This year they have expanded that collection into a full LP of holiday songs to be released onNovember 18. Available to stream in its entirety via Exclaim!, the album combines both traditional and popular songs that are joyous and at times melancholy. Adding to the five tracks released in 2013, the album now includes a John Jacob Niles’ arrangement of “I Wonder As I Wander”, traditional British carol “The Holly And The Ivy”, and “Minuit Chretiens”, the Placide Cappeau poem known in English as “O Holy Night”. The set also includes a heartfelt acoustic version of “Where’s My Baby, Tonight?” as well as a new original “Remember Me”. Rounding out the LP is a special hidden track by Will Oldham featuring Peter Cash called “I See A Darkness”.
“In expanding the Angels Christmas EP into a full length album we realized that the most moving moments of the season are more than just expressions of glad tidings and comfort and joy,” says Skydigger Andy Maize. “That there are moments of melancholy, regret and truth that are in their own way as much a part of the Christmas experience as any joyous carol. And that Angels are with us throughout the year, and that with their guidance we are free to celebrate our quieter, more personal moments as well.”
For nearly 25 years Skydiggers’ friends and fans, returning home for the holidays, have been gathering the weekend before Christmas at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto to celebrate the season to the soundtrack of the band’s distinctive rootsy Christmas tunes, special guests and Skydiggers’ classics. And this year, along with releasing a full length Christmas album, Skydiggers are taking this seasonal celebration on the road.

And running out of heating oil in the Winter was cause for a Out Of Oil Party.
We’ll talk about some of the characters who shaped his World and then a wine story..a very expensive bottle that belonged to his friend Russell Crowe and Alan’s need for a glass or two.

The names involved are very impressive.
Bill Lui Winn Choi – a wealthy true wine fan..visited and studied all 5 Grand Cru Vineyards in France and was determined to find a vineyard in BC to replicate Bordeaux.
He found his vineyard and local knowledge in two legends Harry McWatters and Viticulturalist Richard Cleave.
What was missing was a winemaker with the chops to make this blend..Bill Lui found Anne Vawler in Napa.

What began as a grand experiment has taken its place as one of the best in Canada.
The winemaker of record for many years was Pascal Madevon, a veteran French winemaker.
He brought charm and passion to the Okanagan and has moved on.
Our guest is his replacement Mathieu Mercier.

Mathieu was born in 1988 in Cognac to a family of cognac producers. He has degrees in viticulture and enology from two of Bordeaux’s leading universities.
He spent some time in Chile where he worked for Don Melchor, the premium winery of Concha y Toro,”
Then he worked in Bordeaux for André Lurton at Château La Louvière and Château de Rochemorin. Then to California where he worked in 2010 for Swanson Winery in Napa. He went back in 2012 making wine for Cain Vineyard and Winery in St. Helena.

“When I was a boy, I had no idea. About many things. I knew a few facts, here and there, but I was absolutely sure about very little. I had more questions than answers. I was more curious than certain.” So begins Alan Doyle’s heartfelt coming-of-age memoir. A Newfoundlander, a Catholic (and an altar boy), a lover of music from an early age, and a lone MontrealCanadiens fan in a household devoted to Gordie Howe and the Detroit Red Wings, Alan was a “Petty Harbour dog, through and through.” Located south of St. John’s, Alan’s hometown of Petty Harbour was once a thriving fishing village of approximately 500 inhabitants. It was the kind of place where a “young fella could go weeks without seeing or meeting a person that he hadn’t known for his whole life.” Against this backdrop, Doyle grows up, buoyed by a larger-than-life assortment of family members, friends and neighbours, all of whom contribute to creating a young songwriter and world-class performer-in-the-making.
As a child, young Alan learned from his parents the importance of hard work and the value of a dollar. The second son of Tom Doyle, local musician by night and orderly at the local psychiatric hospital by day, and Jean Doyle, a gifted piano teacher, Alan was born into a family steeped in love and music. The family home was a two-bedroom house with no running water and a beef-bucket for a toilet. There was no family car, meals were stretched for a family of six, and clothes were hand-me-downs. Yet the family lacked for nothing. “We made something out of nothing. Somehow, on a budget of a few thousand dollars a year, my folks managed to house, clothe and feed themselves and four kids…I’ll never understand how they did it. And I’ll never be able to explain to them how grateful I am that they did.”
In WHERE I BELONG, Alan Doyle chronicles his early years and creates a portrait of small-town Newfoundland that is by turns hilarious and poignant. Along the way, we encounter a tremendous cast of characters, all of whom left an indelible mark on Doyle. We meet Alan’s “Granda” Bernard Doyle, who never forgave Joey Smallwood for surrendering Newfoundland to Canada in 1949; old Frank Brake (with a “face like a catcher’s mitt”), who lived in an abandoned railway car and was prone to mishaps that would kill an ordinary man; “Bottlenose” Bill, a hardened fisherman whose extramarital affairs are the stuff of legend; and tough-as-nails Maureen of the Harbour Grocery, who was always quick with a harsh word and reluctant to lift a finger to help a customer, let alone to assist one of those “bastarding Doyles.”
Doyle’s tremendous gifts as a storyteller recreate a bygone era in Newfoundland’s history. Readers will stalk the wharfs with Alan and his pals as they traffic cod tongues to tourists and to local restaurants, enjoy “out-of-oil parties” where all partygoers congregate in one room to keep it warm when there’s not enough money for heat, and go on death-defying excursions deep into a treacherous gorge in pursuit of abandoned adult magazines.

Okanagan Crush Pad is one great success story. Originally set up to provide crushing and bottling facilities for small wineries in BC, they eventually started to make their own wines as well.

Paul Clifton joined the Hahn Estate team in 2003, after finishing a postgraduate degree in Viticulture/Enology in New Zealand. In 1996, he left a career in firefighting to become a winemaker, a hobby of his until then. As a native of the Monterey Bay, his passions lie in the beauty of the area, its potential for excellence in winegrowing, and the fact that it’s a great surfing destination!! One of Paul’s greatest talents is balancing the fact that the year’s best surfing happens right at harvest time..so its grapes first..board work second.

Monterey County is the home of Hahn Family’s Vineyard Estate. The family now owns six estate vineyards two in Arroyo Seco in Monterey and four in the prime Santa Lucia Highlands.
They make Hahn, Hahn SLH, Lucienne, Smith and Hook and a killer Zin called Boneshaker.

The Golden Mile
When sub-appellations are named in the Okanagan, the Golden Mile Bench between Oliver and Osoyoos is on track to be among the first (along with the Black Sage and Naramata benches). Sub-appellations are part of the evolution of a mature wine region—and much coveted by wineries.
Situated on an upper bench, significantly warmer than the valley floor, Golden Mile vineyards benefit from good airflow, allowing the vines to escape spring and fall frosts. Generally facing east to south-east, the vines catch good early morning sun but shade by late afternoon. The cool evenings slow ripening, encouraging the development of complexity and intense flavours. The unique conditions are ideal for growing cooler climate varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Riesling, as well as sinewy reds.
For wine trekkers, the Golden Mile (more than a mile) runs from Fairview Cellars, named after the old gold mining town outside Oliver, to Castoro de Oro, north of Osoyoos Lake. Home to a dozen wineries, the Golden Mile integrates intriguing vintages with a dynamic, rural setting.
Combine fine wines with winery restaurants, plus local history, a network of hiking trails overlooking the bench and beyond, and you have the formula for one of the Okanagan’s most irresistible agri-tourism experiences.
