Mulligan Stew Jan 25th 2025-Blackie and The Rodeo Kings remember Garth Hudson and The Band

I was able to convince Tom Wilson, Colin Linden and Stephen Fearing to join me on Zoom this morning to talk about the state of Blackie and The Rodeo Kings and their own solo careers.

(I was really hoping to convince them to get together again and make music)

Because each of them had worked with and had become friends with the late Garth Hudson,  I decided to take the first 5 minutes to ask them for their thoughts on Garth and the legacy of The Band.

Well, 5 minutes became 10 or more but I’ve edited it down to a tight 5 minutes for Saturday’s Stew. It’s powerful stuff.

Next week we’ll include much more of the interview we gathered to do.

Stephen has a new album coming in March, Colin is touring with T Bone Burnett and has dates coming our way on his Ride On Tour and Tom Wilson is just flat-out busy. He is releasing singles which are songs from his play Beautiful Scars.

Two donor hours this week.

Hour One. The Witts suggested Kue Varo, Kathleen Edwards and I have birthday tunes from Alicia Keys and Lucinda Williams.

Hour Two.  Mary and Graeme have lots of suggestions. “how about a Canadian Hour to celebrate being a Canadian”

The sad news of  Garth Hudson passing and the loss of the last member of The Band started me rolling with Canadian artists who were influenced by The Band.

The Band

Blue Rodeo, Kevin Hearn and Garth Hudson along with Band tracks that featured Garth..

Garth sitting in on tracks by Leonard Cohen and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

We also include our just recorded comments about Garth and The Band from all three members of BARK. They had known Garth and had played with him.

The longer Blackie and the Rodeo Kings interview will be heard on next weeks Stew and the complete interview on Mulligan Stew Podcast and tdm YouTube.

You’re going to love the music in this show. It salutes one of the most distinctive and historical artists in all of music. The Band.

They crafted music that captured the history of the American Deep South. Four Canadians and a singular drummer,  with an unmistakable voice,  from Arkansas.

Have a listen
