Mulligan Stew February 24th- Serena Ryder and Bahamas

hello

Two guests. No waiting.

Plus a full hour of back-to-back-to-back tracks (see below)
As for the interview guests…
Serena Ryder is touring the West performing songs from her latest album Utopia.
I waited a couple of years to ask her questions about
A 50-second song on Harmony called Something Inside Me.
I wanted to know what effect having a massive hit with Stompa had in her Music And life.
Also from Utopia..the story behind the binge that lead to Firewater.
And finally, we finish with a Live version of Leonard Cohen’s Sisters of Mercy performed in Leonards hometown Montreal.
Serena does reveal what her next musical direction will be.
Coming Full Circle.

The last 30 minutes of The Stew finds us trading verbs with Alfie Jurvanen better known as Bahamas.
He’s just releasing Earthtones. Filled once again with wonderfully quirky tunes and thoughts.
Such as
Bad boys need love to (about his relationship with his Father)
No Depression (about his battle with and progression with Depression)
Everything to Everyone. (Just rocks)
Opening act (the shooby Doody song) (when no one would hire him)
It’s a damn fine show if I don’t say so myself.
Enjoy!
Oh. By the way. There’s now a Mulligan Stew Podcast. More next week.

Mulligan Stew Feb 17th 2018- Terra Lightfoot and Steve Poltz Interviews

hello

OK..what we have here is a failure to say no.

Would I like an interview with Terra Lightfoot? –  Hell, yeah.

Would I like an interview with Steve Poltz? – You bet.

Would I like an interview with Serena Ryder? – of course.

How about an interview with Bahamas? – Uh Yeah!!

That’s the way the week went.

So this week we’ll be featuring Terra Lightfoot who is on a big-time roll. She’s touring Canada as a headliner, releasing a new album called New Mistakes and has just been nominated for her first Juno award for Best Adult Alternative Album.

A wicked combination of folk singer, blues shouter and 70’s rock God. (Terra wanted the sound to be reminiscent of the 70’s but with a touch of Spinal Tap)

When New Mistakes rocks it achieves liftoff. Due in part to Terra’s vocals and killer guitar work.

Then comes the opportunity to interview Steve Poltz.

Born in Halifax (his birthday is Tuesday) Moved to San Diego and now Nashville.

I phoned Mike Campbell (Mike and Mike MuchMusic) who books and runs The Carlton Room in Halifax to get a sense of Steve.

“I’ve seen him 60 times..he’s played this room at least 30 times. Never does the same set twice. Never knows what he’s going to sing and is the best solo act I’ve ever seen”

I’m going to find Steve on the phone between his  Block Heater gig in Calgary Saturday afternoon and his solo performance at the National Music Centre in Calgary Saturday night.

Mulligan Stew February 10th 2018- Dog Tunes…

hello

It all started with a song about a dog coming out of my car speakers.
Curtis Saldago was singing his song “I want my dog to live longer”.
A wicked blues riff carried the message about loving our dogs, cats, pets, companions all.

So.  The last 30 minutes of this Stew will feature Dog tunes. Some actually about dogs.  Rufus Thomas, Procol  Harum, Colin James, Big Mama Thornton, Lake Street Dive, Jim  Byrnes, Curtis and that Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog Johnny Cash.

Photo: Bob Kronbauer

New tunes from Anderson East, Terra Lightfoot, Jesse Roper and Rick Scott.
Plus CSN, John Lee Hooker, Tom Petty, The Hip, Barney, CoCo, Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and more.

Mulligan Stew February 3rd 2018- Brothers and Sisters

hello

Once again..no interviews/all music…

This first Stew in February starts with Cold Sweat!!

Three different versions of the same James Brown song.

A wicked Afro Cuban version by Mongo Santamaria.

Followed by Albert King and Angelique Kidjo.

New Jim Cuddy. New Molly Johnson, New Sam Coffey.  New Sheepdogs and New Avett Brothers.

And that Avett song was the key to the show.

I love The Avett Brothers and especially a song called No Hard Feelings. A Look back at a life lived and how our emotions bind us.

As much as the lyrics affect me..the bigger pull at my heart is the harmonies and how their vocals join as one.

I’ve fallen hard for family harmonies..brothers, sisters..whole families. You can’t replicate that chemistry. You either have it as a family or you don’t. Families know each other’s secrets and it shows in the music.

So having said that, I started a list of families in music. Not FAKE FAMILIES like The Doobie Brothers, Chemical Bros, Thompson Twins, Flying Burrito Bros, Poppy Family, etc.

I thought about The Carter Family, Sister Sledge, The Pointers, The Marley Family, Tegan and Sarah, The Allman’s, Vaughn Bros, Crooked bros, Jackson 5, The Proclaimers, Beyonce and Solange Knowles, Chris and Rich Robinson (Black Crowes), Cowboy Junkies, Rankins, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, The Cowsills, The Roches, The Cuddys, Bentalls, Kreegan Bros, Ann and Nancy Wilson, The Wainwrights, Campbell Bros, Isley Brothers, Brothers Landreth etc.

For this Stew I’m thinking Neville Brothers, Everly Bros, The Wood Brothers, Staple Singers, Aretha Franklin and her sisters, The Wilson Brothers of The Beach Boys and First Aid Kit, Klara and Johanna those Soderberg sisters with the exquisite harmonies.

I promise I’ll be doing a Part two

Keep in mind National Sibling Day rolls around  April 10

Enjoy The Stew – Brothers and Sisters

Mulligan Stew January 27th 2018- Jesse Roper and Jim Cuddy Interviews

hello

Hours after this show had been recorded and sent, I found out that my friend Tommy Banks had died.

Musician, mentor, humanitarian, Senator and one of the best people I had ever met,  Tommy Banks is very much woven into the fabric that is Canada.

The kind of person who will always be remembered by anyone who met or even knew him.

He brought light to our lives and that light has dimmed but not gone out.

He’s left music and memories.

He should be honored at this year’s Junos in Vancouver and frankly, I would suggest a permanent award in his honor.

Whatever that park is named adjacent to CKUA Radio on Jasper Ave in Edmonton should be renamed, Tommy Banks Park.

Goodbye Tommy …

Mulligan Stew

8:00-10 PM

It feels like Jesse Roper is just beginning what could be a fabulous career in music. He’s just released this third album called Access to Infinity which is released Friday, Feb 2. He’s more than paid his dues. Playing stages big and small getting his name and his songs out there.

Jesse is a really good songwriter, vocalist, and performer but man can he play guitar.

We talk about his influences and I hear Jimi and Carlos Santana in his playing.  Thankfully he agreed.

His third album is called Access to Infinity.  I can’t wait to play certain tracks after “the embargo” is lifted.

Jesse’s touring with Big Wreck and the dates are below.

Jim Cuddy RAW interview Jim Cuddy Constellation RAW Jan 2018

Jim Cuddy, co-founder, and co-leader of Blue Rodeo has released his fourth solo album “Constellation”  Friday under the name of The Jim Cuddy Band.

Jim and I work our way through several of the songs he wrote and he mentions there’s a balance in the album between loss and love.

It takes a true songwriter to find that balance. As Jim says “I wanted to waste not one word on this album.”

We talk about the koss of Gord Downey.  The battle John Mann is waging.  The title track called “Constellations” (with an s) is about yet another friend battling Cancer and what his loss meant.

Jim also lights right up when I mention his upcoming 33 date tour.

“33 doesn’t sound right. It should be 35”

He wants to create a tour like Motown used to do. Various artists all sharing microphones and supporting each other.

That would make Jim Marvin Gaye and Barney Bentall Tammi Terrell.

The full line up is The Jim Cuddy Band.  Wicked Good.

Then Barney Bentall and his new album.

Jim’s sons Sam and Devin.

This is going to be a memorable tour. One musical generation handing the flame to the next!!

Mulligan Stew Jan 20th 2018- Rhiannon Giddens Interview

hello

My first question was ..when I interviewed you three years ago with the Carolina Chocolate Drops..did you know your life was about to change?

Rhiannon – “Noooooooo”

It was all about The Drops..until Producer extraordinaire T-bone Burnett asked her to “use her voice”

And her thinking was ..”the stars aligned. When somebody comes and taps you on the shoulder..you need to Listen”

“T-bone told me “you’ve been hiding in that band and he was right.”

Now I’m here having sung Summertime in the original key and singing Waterboy with the SF Symphony and then the song  At the Purchasers Option. That’s what happens when you follow The Muse and when you get a chance to do these things..I’m going to follow where I’m led”

In talking about the road she’s travelled..Rhiannon Giddens told me/us

“I feel such a responsibility because my life is what my parents and grandparents fought for They fought so that I could think and write these songs.:

She mentions Pops and Mavis Staples and singing   Birmingham Sunday with  Joan Baez who’s been singing that song for 50 years and then completes the thought with..

“It completes a through line. Nobody creates in a vacuum. It’s all building blocks on somebody else’s work.”

“I want to talk and sing not about Donald Trump. I want to sing about how we got here. How we’re still here.  How can we expect a country that was  founded on

Genocide, slavery, on rampant capitalism bring us to roses and incense today?  I maintain that music is a cultural reflection of what’s going on. Let’s celebrate the beauty  while  keeping an eye out”

There’s a LOT more in this 30 minutes..a lot more.

Including songs from Tomorrow is my turn and Freedom Highway.

I’ve heard this interview many times since we did it backstage at the Edmonton Folk Fest and I’m still hearing and learning new things from it.

Remarkable conversation..  enjoy!

Know thy history. Let it horrify you; let it inspire you. Let it show you how the future can look, for nothing in this world has not come around before. These songs are based on slave narratives from the 1800s, African American experiences of the last century, and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and headlines from streets of Ferguson and Baltimore today. Voices demanding to be heard, to impart the hard-earned wisdom of a tangled, difficult, complicated history; we just try to open the door and let them through.” —Rhiannon Giddens

Freedom Highway, Grammy Award–winner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens’ follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn, was released by Nonesuch Records on February 24, 2017. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn‘s 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, “Birmingham Sunday” and Staple Singers’ well-known “Freedom Highway,” from which the album takes its name.

Giddens wrote of the title track:

“I am a daughter of the South; of the white working class, of the black working class; of the Democrat, and the Republican; of the gay, and the straight; and I can tell you one thing—we are far more alike than we are different. We cannot let hate divide us; we cannot let ignorance diminish us; we cannot let those whose greed fills their every waking hour take our country from us. They can’t take U.S. from US—unless we let them. I recorded this with Bhi Bhiman, all-American singer-songwriter from St. Louis, whose parents are from Sri Lanka. America’s strength are her people, whether they came 4,000, 400, or 40 years ago, and we can’t leave anyone behind. Let’s walk down Freedom Highway together. Written by Pops Staples in 1965.”

Rhiannon Giddens, who had previously won accolades and a Grammy Award as a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, made her solo debut with Tomorrow Is My Turn, which was one of 2015’s most highly praised albums; the New York Times said, “her voice is a perpetually soulful marvel,” The album was Grammy nominated, and Giddens received the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Singer of the Year. Earlier this year she won the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Bluegrass and Banjo.

She performed for President Obama and the First Lady on a White House Tribute to Gospel, along with Aretha Franklin, Emmylou Harris and Colin Linden

Mulligan Stew Dec 12th 2017- No guests.  No interviews.  No specials.  Just pure killer tracks!

hello

We’ve cleared the decks…

No guests.  No interviews.  No specials.  Just pure killer tracks for a Saturday night in the DEAD OF WINTER.

We all could use music, food, sleep, and friends.

Got a Net message asking why I only played Stay with Me by The Faces.  I explained because it was one of rocks greatest songs.

It got me to thinking about what else I love about those guys.

They were buddies.  It showed on stage. The audience was part of the party.

Bottles of Mateus were stashed behind speakers and amps. They did have fun.

At the end of the night, the boys were making splendidly sloppy rock and roll.  It was perfect.

So..we start with THREE Faces songs.

Gasoline Alley (Live at The Fillmore)

Had me a real good time

Memphis Tennessee

And then we’re off with Chris Stapleton, Sting, Steely Dan, Rhiannon Giddons, Mark Knopfler, Fats, Taj, Townes, CoCo, Crazy Horse, Stones, Otis, Squib Cakes and Jackson Browne with The Load out and Stay.

Tonnes of Live tracks in here.

Enjoy. please raise a glass to The Faces.

Heads up – Working on a March 1st Juno Couch in Vancouver.

Mulligan Stew Jan 6th 2018- Dan Mangan Interview

hello

Saturday’s  show has 90 minutes of wall to wall music. A wicked mix of blues, R&B, Roots, pure great rock and roll (The Faces – Stay with Me, Springsteen Live in Dublin, The Sheepdogs Live at The Roxy LA, Jimi, Colin James, Imagine Dragons, Sarah McLachlan and – wait for it – Nancy Sinatra

The last 30 minutes features Dan Mangan. We talk a bit about what he’s currently working on but Dan really wants all of us to know about a movement he’s helping to lead.

Because of the imploding nature of today’s  music business artists really need a DIY movement and this is it.

It’s called Side Door Access www.sidedooraccess.com

“We are building a platform where artists can earn a living by trimming the overhead of touring. We help you find magical small spaces with dedicated hosts and attentive audiences.

We want to help create human, tactile experiences offline. Music, Speakers, Dance, Theatre, Comedy – you name it.”

They currently have 200 artists and 300 hosts and the movement is growing every week.

Dan explains how artists and hosts hook up..set a date, time and location and then tickets get sold. Friends are made, one gig at a time.

It’s a fascinating story…Let Dan Mangan be your narrator.

This show was sponsored by our friends

Barb andBbob Shaunessy – former owners of Tinhorn Creek.

They are the donor for first hour…

Played hockey over the Holidays in Invermere.

Right after The Stew they’re off to the Cook Islands!  Thank YOU!!

Mulligan Stew Dec 23rd 2017- Christmas in the Round year Three!

hello

It’s fair to say that Christmas is the most traditional season of the year.

Mulligan Stew has its own tradition we’d like to share with you.

It all started at CBC Vancouver in the late 70s with Producer Susan Englebert.

I was hosting a weekly show called The Great Canadian Goldrush and Susan brought together several of our artist friends to sing Christmas songs and tell Christmas tales.

Shari Ulrich, Roy Forbes, Terry Frewer were all part of those shows.

The show became a tradition – year after year.

Then life happened.  Our friend Susan lost a battle with cancer, Goldrush was canceled and we all moved on.

It wasn’t until I signed on with Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver that the idea of Christmas in the Round started to take shape.

Finally, I had a great mix.

Artists that were attracted to Roundhouse Radio’s support of music and the arts.

And a real working studio..plus a lobby that doubled as a stage. Perfect!!

This is now Year Three of Christmas in the Round.

Shari Ulrich is still part of the group.

( Roy Forbes joined us last year)

This year the lineup is strong. Everyone on the stage had an amazing year. Recording, touring, co-writing and making new friends.

Barney Bentall – had just come off the road with Cariboo Express. Released a fine new album The Drifter and the Preacher and was about to tour coast-to-coast in early 2018 with the  Jim Cuddy Band.

Shari Ulrich – on the road with Barney, playing with other artists, forming a trio with her daughter Julia and fellow Cariboo Expresser  Kirby Barber, who’s also with us this year.

(Julia recorded and mixed this hour)

Jim Byrnes- host of Byrnes Blues with a well-earned reputation as a singular performer, who proudly shows his St Louis roots in every song.

He too has a new album coming out in Feb. – Long Hot Summer Days.

Bill Henderson – Leader, writer, vocalist, and guitarist of Chilliwack. Mentor to many of today’s new artists. Producer and picker.

Craig Northey – Original member of The Odds. Invaluable session man, co-writer, and part of perhaps the best backing band in the Country.

You may notice in the group photo that he’s leaning on a crutch. That’s because he BROKE his ankle playing hockey 2 weeks before this session and he still came to play.

He’s a gamer. A lifer.

Geoff Hicks – Plays drums with EVERYONE – Colin James, Barney, never mind..it’s way too many to mention

Rob Becker – Ditto. Need a great bass player? Start in the B’s with Becker.  Plays with Barney a lot.

They all have Christmas songs and stories and a tradition to carry on.

Many thanks to Cory Price, Julia Graff, Monique McQueen, Alex Rodgerson, Don Shafer, Margaret Garrison, Dave Dhillon, Gabe Reinarz, Julian Anton, Scott Elliott and Duke, Natalie Pitt.

Many thanks to our singers and pickers

And as always Corey Wood and MEG – The Home Team

This show is dedicated to the memory of Susan Englebert
