Mulligan Stew May 5th 2018-Shakey Graves, Donovan Woods Interviews

hello

It’s the last Stew on Roundhouse Radio.  At this point no one knows what will happen next.

It was a wild ride.

HOWEVER, Mulligan Stew carries on.

It’s in its 22nd year on CKUA Radio.  Province wide in Alberta .

Every Saturday 5-7PM Mtn (4-6 Pacific)

Streamed on the CKUA App. And on the website www.ckua.com

And now it’s a PODCAST

Mulligan Stew  Music.Film.Food.Wine on Spotify, Google Play Music and iTunes.

Our Special Guests this week both have brand new albums

Shakey Graves – Can’t Wake Up.  His 5th in 7 years.  From a One man Band with a suitcase to headliner. Shakey delivers!!

Donovan Woods – Establishing himself as a consummate singer/songwriter.  Doesn’t seek fame just an audience to call his own.

Album is called Both Ways.

From The Austin Chronicle

In December, Shakey Graves tweeted, “Next album. New sound. Sell your suspenders.”

Droll, but even then it was hard to imagine Austin son Alejandro Rose-Garcia forgoing the sound that collages his growing body of work. Out of his trademark suitcase kick-drum, 2011 debut Roll the Bones tumbled forth bedroom intimacy and playfulness, an old-timey, distinctly Southwestern collusion of acoustica – guitar, banjo, harmonica, hand claps – and even a telling Springsteen cover, ‘billy bomp “I’m on Fire.” That began buzz throughout his hometown but quick.

The Donor Blues EP (2012) retained said stripped folk jig, but national breakout And the War Came two years later offered full-band bravado and high-watt jams, launching Shakey Graves beyond a homegrown hero turned FridayNight Lights cult TV actor. Third proper full-length Can’t Wake Up now completes his metamorphosis into an exceptional songwriter whose songs manifest into cinematic novellas. Characters living therein and their actions come to life in dreamy detail.”

Couldn’t have said it better.

Alejandro began his music career with a buskers mentality on stage – without ever really busking out on the streets.

His was a solo act with a suitcase for a drumkit. Then a 3 piece and now a full band backs him up.

In 2015 he was named Best Emerging Artist at the Americana Music Awards.

Now, here he is 5 albums in 7 years. The latest –just released – is Can’t Wake Up. It’s a heady mix of folk, blues, rock and roots.

He’s an actor, singer/songwriter and an artist. He designed the montage for the album cover.

His Father was a film set designer so you know his stage show will be special.

He IS coming our way..Massey Hall Toronto is sold out, as is Montreal show. He’s at Regina Folk Festival in August, which is the heart of the festival season in the West.

So…who knows!

He may he Shakey but he’s also a  charming soul.

Donovan Woods.

We welcome back an old friend – Canadian born, Nashville based singer/songwriter Donovan Woods and his new album  Both Ways.

Donovan can’t be called a country singer but he has country fans. He’s a folkie who shows up at Jazz festivals.

Even though he’s a really fine performer I think it’s his songwriting that will eventually make him a star.

Frankly, as he admits in this interview, stardom is not exactly what he’s looking for.
“Just a 1000 people in a room”  With hopefully a  series of ever-expanding rooms.

Both Ways ought to do the trick.

He’s just passed through the West but I do believe DW will be back before the summer is over.

Both RAW interviews will find their way onto the Mulligan Stew Podcast.

Enjoy!

Mulligan Stew March 31 2018- Sue Foley interview

hello

Sue Foley is the only female member of the famed “Jungle Show,” featuring Billy Gibbons, Jimmie Vaughan, Mike Flanigin and Chris Layton, which became one of the hottest tickets in Austin in 2016. Soon after playing two sold-out shows at Austin City Limits Live 3TEN Club in December, Foley entered the studio with her Texan pals and began laying down tracks for the new album. Recorded throughout 2017, The Ice Queen represents Foley’s full circle journey – her return to the roots of her career in Austin with producer Mike Flanigin. The album was recorded with her long-time friends and collaborators Vaughan, Gibbons, Layton, Sexton, and others, as well as members of the Tedeschi Trucks and Gary Clark Jr. bands.

“When I was a teenager I idolized Jimmie Vaughan and Billy F Gibbons,” Foley says. “They’re both legends now so this feels like a historical event (at least it does for me). And I grew up sitting at the feet of players like George ‘Big Beat’ Rains, Derek O’Brien and The Texas Horns. I spent many nights watching Charlie Sexton and the Arc Angels with Chris Layton. I learned and grew more musically in my years in Austin than at any point in my life. The fact that all these mega-talented musicians have graced my album is beyond anything I hoped for. I am still pinching myself.”

A flood of inspiration and themes can be found on each of the tracks –Opening with the radio-friendly, funky, swamp-meets Bo Diddley beat of “Come to Me,” The Ice Queen also features the upbeat and rollicking tracks “Run,” “The Lucky Ones” (a duet with Jimmie Vaughan) and “Gaslight.” There are several bluesy and soulful tracks, including “81,” “The Ice Queen,” (with its menacing John Lee Hooker vibe in tone and substance), “Fool’s Gold” (featuring Billy F Gibbons on vocals and harmonica), “If I Have Forsaken You” (with the horns sounding echoes of the great Bobby “Blue” Bland), and a cheeky, guitar-heavy cover of Bessie Smith’s “Send Me To The ‘Lectric Chair.” Sue  also the jazzy “Death of a Dream,” the flamenco-blues hybrid “The Dance” (which showcases her acoustic guitar work) and a beautiful cover of the Carter Family’s “Cannonball Blues.”

She has been working professionally since the age of 16, spent 3 years living in and learning from Vancouver’s vibrant blues scene and by the age of 21,  Sue Foley had become a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn and relocated to Austin, Texas, and began recording for Antone’s, the esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of Stevie Ray  and many others.  In 2001, she won the prestigious Juno Award and also holds the record for the most Maple Blues Awards in Canada and has earned three Trophies de Blues de France. She has also garnered several nominations at the Blues Music Awards from The Blues Foundation.

Foley’s catalog includes 11 recordings under her own name, an instructional DVD and book, as well as various compilations and projects. As an offshoot to her professional recording and touring career, Foley started a project called Guitar Woman based around dozens of interviews she conducted with the world’s leading female guitarists. From 2001-2008, she wrote articles, organized and promoted concerts, and worked on a book—fueling her passion for gender studies in music and her desire to bring the work of great women guitar players to light.

Mulligan Stew March 24th 2018-The Juno Interviews!

hello

Special Guests…Ed Robertson. Buffy Sainte Marie – Bruce Cockburn – Jann Arden- Neula Charles- Terra Lightfoot

It’s been almost 10 years since The Junos Awards were in Vancouver.

#aboutfreakintime

My first choice was to do this show on The Juno Couch.

Unfortunately, it was posted on Craig’s List.

Speaking of “list” –  I made one of my own.  Artists I would love to talk to.

Because BareNaked Ladies were being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and because Steven Page had agreed to appear with The ladies for the first time in 10 years I went looking for Ed Robertson who co-founded the group with Steven.

We cover a lot of ground in our 9 minutes on the phone. (the rest will be posted on Mulligan/Stew The Podcast on iTunes and Google Play Music)

You’ll hear when they made the decision, why they agreed to reconnect and what songs and friends they’re bringing along.

I found Buffy Sainte Marie in Vancouver ready to start her day. FYI – nobody fills a day better than Buffy.

We talk about her years of connection with The Junos, today’s music and her place in it and her new album Medicine Songs. (the Rest of the interview can be heard asap at MulliganStew The Podcast. Including her story about being in Hawaii and waiting 35 minutes for the “missiles” to land.

In rapid order, we also talk to

Bruce Cockburn about his nominated album Bone on Bone

Jann Arden about her Juno thoughts..and because it’s Jann..we talk about everything else.

Terra Lightfoot First time Juno nominee. Completely buzzed about being there.

Nuela Charles – with a great story.  The last time she attended the Junos in Vancouver she was a seat filler. She comes back as a nominee.

PLUS a full 90 minutes of music as an opening act.

Check out the playlist..I’m not lying.

HAVE A GREAT Juno Weekend.

Mulligan Stew March 3rd 2018- John Mann

hello

A couple of weeks ago Jim Byrnes and I visited John Mann in his special care residence in Yaletown.

His shape and form are the same but his memory has departed. If he recognized us I didn’t see it.

Our memory of John is/was of a dynamic, brilliant human. The kind of man who you instantly wanted as a best friend.

John was lead singer and co-writer for Spirit of the West. He was a wonderful actor. (we shared an agent)

He raised funds for an African village. If money was being raised for a friend..John was always there.

If there was a movement he identified with – he lent his name and music.

Sounds too good to be true?  Believe me, that was his life.

Well, that and his family.  His wife and love and partner is  Jill Daum.  They have two children.

John has battled Cancer and now early onset Alzheimer.  All his friends have stood behind John and Jill with love and compassion.

They’ve gathered in Toronto and now Vancouver.

Nov 11 we all gathered at The Commodore Ballroom.

It was one of the very best nights any of us could remember. Everyone on the guest list below sang and played.

John danced his way across the stage and back again but only once did he speak into a microphone. He said “this is fun”

For over 30 years they left their mark and became one of Canada’s most popular bands..even though they weren’t churning out pop hits.
They were a wicked combination of punk, folk, Celtic and roots.
Over the past number of years John Mann, lead singer and co-founder succumbed to early on-set Alzheimer’s. It robbed him of his memory but not his strength and drive.
It was my pleasure to host the evening, more like a traffic cop, as bodies were flying in and out.
Listen..it’s hard to watch your friend disappear but we all CAN do something. There’s a Go Fund me page for John Mann. $41,000 has been raised so far for his support and care. The goal is $50,000.  Please help if you can
The video is from my iphone at the side of the stage for the finale…
A rousing all-star cast version of Home for a Rest.
I swear it’s taken on a life of its own.

Alan “freaking” Doyle took all cast into the men’s Washroom at the Commodore and had them sing and play the song.
The video at the top of this post is from Alan Doyle.
You can HELP. A GoFundMe page has been set up in John Manns name.

Have you got some coin you can sent his way??
He needs care and that’s where the money is going.
Thank You
