Mulligan Stew Feb 7th 2015- Dan Mangan Interview

hello

Dan-Mangan
Dan Mangan

Most certainly one of the musical highlights of last year was dan mangan and blacksmith performing live and in acapella    at the edmonton folk fest.
now with the release of club meds, they’ve turned a corner and are perhaps leaving some of the fans to make a choice.
follow the boys or find another happy quirky indy band.
Those bands are a dime  a dozen, so the choice is obvious..sign on for the long haul with dan and blacksmith because its going to be a very interesting and every changing ride.

Mulligan Stew January 31st 2015

hello

tom-cochrane

Thomas William Cochrane was born in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada, on May 14, 1953. http://www.tomcochrane.com/
His father, Tuck Cochrane, wasn’t just  a bush pilot. He was a flying/exploring legend in Northern Manitoba.
At the age of 11, Tom sold his toy train set…and bought his first guitar!
By the early 1970′s, Tom was performing in coffee houses all across Canada.
Next, he was on the road to Los Angeles, where Cochrane took a job writing original songs for the movies…but unable to find steady money in music…he headed to Toronto, where he drove a taxi. He also found work on cruise ships…hoping to return to music.
After meeting at the “El Mocambo Tavern,” in 1978, Tom Cochrane joined “Red Rider.” He would be the lead singer, and main song writer, for more than 10 years.
Red Rider was also: Ken Greer, Jeff Jones, Peter Boynton and Rob Baker. By 1986, they were “Tom Cochrane & Red Rider.”

TDM and Tom Cochrane-AfricaTDM invited Tom to join him on a World Vision Tour of Somalia, Mozambique  and other war torn countries in Africa. It changed both their lives.
Tom Cochrane would launch his solo career in 1991, with “Life Is A Highway” (#6/1992).
The “Mad, Mad World” album (seen at the top of the story) would sell 6 million copies!
The albums “Ragged Ass Road,” “Songs Of A Circling Spirit,” “X-Ray Sierra” and “No Stranger” would follow.
He and wife Kathleen have 2 daughters, Cody and Evanne. They live in Oakville, Ontario. In the winter, the  Cochranes spend time at his home outside of Austin, Texas.
Tom Cochrane has earned many awards over the years, both for his music and charity work. He has won 7 “Juno” awards, is a member of the “Canadian Music Hall Of Fame,” and officer of the “Order Of Canada,” is an honorary Colonel in the “Royal Canadian Air Force,” and a 2009 inductee onto the “Canadian Walk Of Fame,” among other recognition.
He continues to tour, packing in the crowds, across Canada.
He plays Grey Eagle Resort in Calgary  Feb 20.
Tom’s first Lp in years has just been released..it’s called Take it Home..
We talk his new music, being a Canadian living in Texas, why Austin and not Nashville, why Canadian artists over the years have been able to capture the soul of the American south.

Mulligan Stew Dec 27th- Frazey Ford Interview

hello

Follow Frazey: @FrazeyFord

frazey_5ep_1500_1

FRANCOIS MARCHAND, VANCOUVER SUN
Documentary filmmaker Robert Gordon was driving down a Memphis road when
Frazey Ford stopped him dead in his tracks.
Ford was on the radio singing If You Gonna Go, a song from her 2010 album
Obadiah. To Gordon, it felt as if Ford was channeling the spirit of Memphis
soul, a topic he was documenting at the time, focusing on soul icon Al
Green, producer Willie Mitchell and Memphis’ famous Royal Recording Studio,
where Green cut some of his classic recordings.
He immediately called the radio station to find out who was playing, and
invited Ford to come down to Tennessee.
What Gordon didn’t know was that the Vancouver-based singer-songwriter – who
is also a member of roots-folk trio Be Good Tanyas – had been a longtime Al
Green fan, and that one of her dreams was to one day work with Green’s famed
Hi Rhythm Section: organist Charles Hodges, Sr., bassist Leroy “Flick”
Hodges and guitarist Mabon “Teenie” Hodges.
“(Gordon) looked me up and sent me an email asking if I wanted to come work
with those guys,” Ford said in a phone interview. “It took me about a month
to respond because I was so in shock. I’ve been obsessed with that band and
those particular musicians most of my musical (life).
“It was too much of a bizarre dream come true.”
Ironically, it had never occurred to Ford, who had first heard Green’s
classic album Love And Happiness while sojourning in London in the early
’90s, to reach out to Mitchell and the Hodges brothers on her own.
“In the Be Good Tanyas, I was always used to working with my own band,” Ford
said. “When I set out solo, I took (guitarist) Trish (Klein, also from Be
Good Tanyas) and John (Raham, the Be Good Tanyas’ drummer) – I work within a
circle of people that I knew and was comfortable with. So to go and do a
whole album with these new people was a very expanding experience for me.”
The resulting album, Ford’s superb sophomore solo effort Indian Ocean, was
recorded in multiple separate sessions: In Memphis with Raham, bassist
Darren Parris and the Hi Rhythm Section, and in Vancouver with her regular
crew of Klein, Raham, Parris, guitarist Craig McCaul, backup vocalists Debra
Jean Creelman and Caroline Ballhorn, and pianist Phil Cook.
Ford admitted the initial Royal Recording Studio session was terrifying.
“I was very intimidated to be having to guide these sessions. We just
experimented. I wanted to jam with them. That’s how they play and that’s how
I play. We play by intuition and feel and that’s why it worked between us.
“For (album opener) September Fields, I was in the control room and I was
singing into (Memphis soul singer) Ann Peebles’ microphone. I was so nervous
that I didn’t have a proper headphone mix. I couldn’t hear what they were
doing. I came out of the backroom and they had turned it into this whole
other thing: It sounded like something between Dolly Parton and Love And
Happiness to me – like, wow.”
In a strange twist of fate, Indian Ocean is the last recording Teenie Hodges
appeared on. He died shortly after the album was completed in June from
complications of emphysema. He was 68. Indian Ocean is dedicated to him.
“He was such a wonderful person and we became quite close,” Ford said. “He
would call me before I’d go on tour. He was a lovely, hilarious character.
He went into a coma not long after we did our last session with him and he
had been saying he might come visit. I feel like he held on to finish that
album. He looked good but he was very frail and he was on oxygen the whole
time. He didn’t have a lot of energy but the energy he had he gave to that
album.”
Recorded over a period of two years, Indian Ocean strikes a fine balance
between light and dark, between elegiac, soul-lifting musicality and
confessional, soul-baring lyricism.
Heartbreak, frayed relationships and, Ford admitted, memories of childhood
abuse and trauma resurfaced on Indian Ocean, but not because she had planned
it.
“It was a really challenging album for me,” Ford said. “Some of the stuff
coming out, I was like, ‘Really? Now?’ I couldn’t see the overall picture
for a long, long time. (Obadiah) came out in one fell swoop: Making sense of
family and all this stuff. (Note: Obadiah is Ford’s middle name, inspired by
the name of the family cat.)
“One thing that’s so clear about (the Hi Rhythm Section) is that, in the
tradition of African-American music, you’re not playing a sad song to bring
somebody down. You may sing about the hardest thing but you sing about it in
a way that’s uplifting. You are interested in being truthful and being
expressive and moving through things.”
That’s the spirit Gordon felt when he heard Ford that time while driving his
car. That’s the spirit every listener will hear and feel when giving Indian
Ocean a spin or when seeing Ford live at her two sold-out shows this week in
Vancouver at St. James Hall.
It won’t be painful to dig deep. Rather, it will make you stronger.
“We carry so much unexpressed stuff because we’re so terrified of it. You’re
not alive when you carry too much of that stuff. Life is painful, no matter
what you do. But that movement through, with beauty and courage, is what
we’re mean to do while we’re here.
“This album traverses some heavy, hard things. There’s no particular answer
or particular resolution – just the tides of life.”

Mulligan Stew Dec 20th-Christmas Special part 2 & Jim Cuddy Interview

hello

Blue RodeoBlue Rodeo  with their newly announced holiday album A Merrie Christmas to You.
Although the album includes a couple of well-known Christmas tunes — “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “O Come All Ye Faithful” — the rest are a slightly more modern. There are covers of Joni Mitchell, Big Star, Paul Simon, Gordon Lightfoot, the Band and more. There are also two Blue Rodeo originals: Jim Cuddy’s brand-new “Home to You This Christmas” and a re-recording of Greg Keelor’s “Glad to Be Alive.”
The album was recorded in a week at their very own Woodshed Studio in Toronto. Each song was captured live.
“The songs are as much about the season as they are about the actual day,” Cuddy said in a statement about the selection of material. “The criteria for choosing material were to find songs that we could actually sing and make our own.”
The cover art comes from an illustration by Keelor’s great-uncle, who made greeting cards back in the ’20s. The tracklist is below, and the name of the artist who wrote each song is in parentheses.

The RAW interview is posted here for your listening pleasure

Last year Skydiggers released an EP of Christmas music entitled Angels as part of their 25th anniversary celebration. This year they have expanded that collection into a full LP of holiday songs to be released onNovember 18. Available to stream in its entirety via Exclaim!, the album combines both traditional and popular songs that are joyous and at times melancholy. Adding to the five tracks released in 2013, the album now includes a John Jacob Niles’ arrangement of “I Wonder As I Wander”, traditional British carol “The Holly And The Ivy”, and “Minuit Chretiens”, the Placide Cappeau poem known in English as “O Holy Night”.  The set also includes a heartfelt acoustic version of “Where’s My Baby, Tonight?” as well as a new original “Remember Me”. Rounding out the LP is a special hidden track by Will Oldham featuring Peter Cash called “I See A Darkness”.
“In expanding the Angels Christmas EP into a full length album we realized that the most moving moments of the season are more than just expressions of glad tidings and comfort and joy,” says Skydigger Andy Maize. “That there are moments of melancholy, regret and truth that are in their own way as much a part of the Christmas experience as any joyous carol. And that Angels are with us throughout the year, and that with their guidance we are free to celebrate our quieter, more personal moments as well.”
For nearly 25 years Skydiggers’ friends and fans, returning home for the holidays, have been gathering the weekend before Christmas at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto to celebrate the season to the soundtrack of the band’s distinctive rootsy Christmas tunes, special guests and Skydiggers’ classics. And this year, along with releasing a full length Christmas album, Skydiggers are taking this seasonal celebration on the road.
A portion of the sales from Angels will be donated to The Unison Benevolent Fund. More details can be found at unisonfund.com.
